Application Februaryk21, 1949, Serial No. 77,620 2 claims.` (c1. 24-10) This invention relates to-pen and pencil holders and more particularly it is an object of the invention to provide a holder adapted for attachment to the pocket of the wearer.

It is well known that on an average more pens and pencils become lost than become worn out. The loss of a pen or pencil most frequently occurs at a time when the owner bendsl over, the pen or pencil dropping from his pocket.

It is, therefore, an object of this invention to provide a fountain pen and pencil holder for securely holding fountain pens and pencils at tmes when the owner is bending over.

yA further object of the invention is to provide a holder for attachment to a pocket and which is provided with means for receiving and holding pencils and pens in a manner whereby they can be easily disengaged from the holder intentionally at any desired time.

Yet another object of the invention is to provide a holder as described which can be easily manufactured from plastic material for economy.

Still another object of the invention is to provide a holder as described which is provided with reinforcing means preferably imbedded therein.

A further object of the invention is to provide a holder as described which may be manufactured from plastics in any one of a variety of colors.

Yet another object of the invention is to provide a device for the purpose described which is sturdy and durable in construction, reliable and efficient in operation, and relatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture, assemble and utilize.

Other and still further objects and advantages of the invention willvbecome apparent from the following detailed description of a preferred embodiment thereof.

Figure 1 is a frontal elevation of the holder of this invention shown as attached to the upper edge of a pocket,` the pocket being shown in dotted lines; a fountain pen being shown in dotted lines upon the holder, a portion of the fountain pen being broken away; and a reinforcing member of the invention being indicated in dotted lines as disposed imbedded therein.

Figure 2 is a side elevation of the holder of this invention shown with a fountain pen secured thereto, the fountain pen being shown in dotted lines and being shown with a portion thereof being broken away.

Figure 3 is a top plan view of the parts shown in Figure 1.

Figure 4 is a rear elevation of the holder of this invention, the reinforcing member thereof being shown in dotted lines.

Figure 5 is a view-in-sectiontaken along the line 5 5 of Figure 1. l

Figure 6 is a frontal elevation of the reinforc ing member of the invention shown before it is imbedded in a holder.

The fountain pen holder of this invention is generally indicated at I0 in Figure 1 and includes a main body portion I2 which is adapted to be disposed in use across the front of the top of a pocket I Il of a suit I6.

The main body portion I2 is preferably of an oblong rectangular shape and is -disposed horizontally in parallelism with the upper edge of the pocket E4 in use. The main body portion I2 is preferably provided with two apertures I8 and spaced apart by a web portion 22. The main body portion I2 is provided with two elongated grooves 28 which are indented into the front side of the main body portion I 2 and extend from the upper edge thereof downwardly to and are disposed in communication with the apertures I8 and 20 respectively adjacent the innermost ends of the apertures I8 and 20.

The grooves 28 are each disposed on opposite sides of the web portion 22 and two tang 4portions 30 are provided extending inwardly into the areas of the respective apertures I8 and 2S from' the adjacent outer side walls bounding the grooves 2S.

The tangs 30 are each provided with a convexly curved portion 32 disposed adjacent the web portion 22 for purposes later described. Also, the tang portions 36 are each preferably provided with a concavely curved side 34 disposed opposite the convex sides 32 for later described purposes.

The grooves 28 extend into the front face-of the main body portion I2 and as a result the `main body portion I2 adjacent the web 22 is weakened. To reinforce the main body portion I2, a reinforcing member 4I) is provided and is best shown in Figure 6. The member 40 is prefwith an upper cross portion 48 disposed at a right angle to the interconnecting portion 4, the portion 48 being disposed in use imbedded in the main body portion l2 across the back side of the grooves 28.

The reinforcing member di] is also preferably provided with two tang reinforcing portions 5i! extending downwardly from the outer ends of the upper cross portion 48. The tang reinforcing portions 50 .are preferably provided with Vconvexly rounded sides 55 disposed opposite the interconnecting portion M similarly to the shape of the tang 30.

A plurality of clip portions 1li are provided by the invention and are each attached at their upper end to the main body portion l2, lthe clip portions 1B each being disposed extending Inormally vertically downward and transversely of the main body portion l2 and being spaced apart therefrom slightly at their lower ends and being curved .backwardly for receiving the upper 4edge Lof =the pocket 14,

The material chosen for the manufacture of .the main body 'portion Li 2 and the clips l@ is preferably a resilient plastic so that the clips i3 are adapted l:to resist `any foroes pulling them away from the Vback :side of the main body portion l2.

In operation, it will be seen that the penrholder of this invention can :be placed upon the upper -edge of .a Vpocket 111., receiving the latter between the clips l' :and the main body portion l2. The construction .of the clips 'i0 is such that the latter will urge against the main Vbody portion i2 for `compressing the -npper edge cf the pocket therebetween.

iA fountain pen or pencil, the former being indicated `in dotted lines in Figures l, 2 and 3, at vSli, and having a clip 82 provided with `a bail 84 aon .its 4lower send as is conventional, is vplaced upon the holder `by placing the pen on th'eback side of the main body portion l2 permitting the ball 3ft to be received in the groove 123 for passing downwardly through the Vgroove 2S until the ball Sd is .free to pass the convexly curved portion 32 of one .of .the tangs 311.

It will be seen that the ball Sii will thus be maintained 'in the aperture 2G, being held there by the concave side 34 of the tang 3Q.

When the wearer desires to remove the pen,

the bali 84 can be passed below the tang 3o and upwardly through the groove 28.

The holder can be economically `made in a variety of colors to match suits of various materials., lwill securely hold a pen, and can be economically manufactured.

From the foregoing description'it is thought to :be obvious .that a vfountain vpen .holder rclip constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modication without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood vas limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as claimed.

A fountain pen detent comprising: a main body portion, said main body portion having `two spaced apart apertures therethrough, said main body portion having two elongated grooves in a front face thereof extending from a normally upper Iend thereof downwardly to and connecting with said apertures; two tang portions each protruding from said main body portion into said aperture alongside a different one of said grooves, `said tang portions L.each having a convex .side adjacent :said 'groove vand a :concave side fopposite said groove; :a plurality `of vresilient clip portions secured to said main body portion at ythe norm-@ly upper end thereof and Iextending nor- ;rnally downwardly von the normally rearward side of said main body portion; and `a reinforcing .member `secured to ysaid mai-n ,body portion, said reinforcing member being disposed lacross ythe rearward side of said grooves `and of that part of said front face which is disposed ,between said apertures, said Yreinforcing member being imbedded in said main body portion.
