SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 254,510, dated March 7, 1882.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JACOB G. SLATER, of Wyandotte, Wyandotte county, Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Holders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to sash-holders, particularly to that class which employ an elastic ball working in an inclined slot or recess to hold the sash; and it has for its object to provide an efficient, simple, and inexpensive device whereby the same may be conveniently operated.

To this end it consists in certain improvements in the construction and operation of the same, substantially as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.

Corresponding parts in the figures are denoted bythe same letters of reference.

Referring by letter to the drawings, A denotes the box or casing, in which is formed an inclined recess, B, and at right angles thereto,

on the under side of the casing, a longitudinal straight groove or recess, 0.

D designates the operating-slide, which consists ofalongitudinal flat body or plate, E, having its ends turned upwardly to form ears or thumb-pieces F.

G is a cage or holder, secured about centrally on plate E, which consists of two walls, H I, and a bottom plate, J, between which the elastic ball or roller K is adjusted.

When desired, the casing may be constructed with two recesses or chambers, B, the elastic ball or roller in one recess serving to hold the sash up, while the ball in the other recess will hold it down, as desired. When constructed in this manner the slide is provided with two cages or holders, as shown in Figs. 3 and 5 of the drawings.

In practice the slide is adjusted in the groove 0, with its ears F outside the ends of the easin g, and the holder G, carrying the elastic ball or roller, inside the recess B. The device is then secured to the window-sash next to the window-frame, and may readily be operated to hold the former up by adjusting the slide so as to compress the elastic ball between the side of the recess B and the window-frame. By moving the slide in the opposite direction the cage will carry the ball to the broader part of recess B and out of engagement with the window-frame, thus releasing the sash and allowing it to be raised or lowered.

My improved device is simple, efficient, durable, and convenient, and by it the elastic ball or roller may more readily be operated than heretofore.

I am aware of Patents No. 205,455, to J. W. and W. W. Wharf, No. 111,339, to P. W. Gates, and No. 85,973, to W. A. Sublett,and do not wish to be understood as claiming broadly any part of these patents, my invention consisting in the herein-described improved arrangement and combination of parts.

Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- As an article of manufacture, the herein-described improved sash-holder, consisting of the casing A, having recess B, and a longitudinal groove or recess, 0, at right angles to the latter and on the under side of the casing, the operating-slide D, adapted to work in said groove (3, consisting of a flat plate, E, havingits ends bentor turned upwardly to form ears or thumbpieces F, and the cage or holder G, consisting of a flat plate, J, having its ends struck up to form walls H I, between which the elastic ball or roller K is to be held, the cage being secured to the face of plate E, substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein shown and specified.
