WINDOW-SASH HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
atented Sept. 23, 1913.
Application filed April 2S, 1913. Serial No. 764,100.
To all cl2/0m t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. Droirr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grove City, in the county ot Mercer and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Window- Sash Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and use'tul improvements in window sash holders.
An object of this invention is the provi sion oit a means whereby the window sash when raised can be locked at any desired height.
Another object oit this invention is the provision of a device which will answer all the necessary requirements oit a lock for any window sash, the same being adapted to retain the sash in any desired position.
`With these and other objects in view, this invention consists oi certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts, to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which :u
Figure 1, is a 'fragmentary sectional view of a window sash showing my invention ap plied, Fig. 2, is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view, of a portion of a sash showing` the locking` means, and Fig. 3, is a pen spective view of my improved catch.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by similar characters ot reference, the numeral 10 denotes in general a section ot a window sash and 11 the window trame which consists oit' the side panels 12, cleat or sash guide 13 and sill 111. The cleat or sash guide 13 has a vertical tack 15 formed therein which at suitable intervals is notched as at 1G the outer edges ot which are wedge shaped as at 17 so as to catch the head or barbed portion 18 oit the latch 19 which is secured to the window sash 2O by a screw 21 or other similar fastener. This latch 19 is L shaped at its lower extremity as at Q2 having the said barbed portion 18 formed on its end, while its 'front and rear edges are curved as at 23. The front curved face 23 terminates into a shoulder 211 which has bosses formed thereon as at 25 to act as a pivot for the said latch 19 to operate on, and to keep the same from coming in frictional contact with the window sash 20, while the rear curved edges terminate in a finger piece Q6, for the convenience oit the operator.
The notches 1G are reinforced by U shaped strips o'tmaterial QG', one ot thc legs 27 of the U shaped member being driven into the wood ol the sash ouide 13 as clearly illustratcd by Fig. 2, oi; thc accompanying drawings` while the other leg Q7 ot' the U shaped member is clamped snugly against the inner t'ace oft tho notches 1G Yformed in the track 15 and is wedge shaped in iormation on its outer end as at 1T, to contorni to the shape ot the notch 1G. i
The operation ot the device is as follows To raise the window sash 20 the operator first must release the finger piece QG by pulling up on same, upon which movement the barbed end 1S is released from the notches '16. The tace 20 ot the barb 1S is rounded and consequently upon raising or lowering the sash 20 rapidly, the rounded tace 29 of the barb rides freely in the track 15 without entering the notches 16. Upon raising or lowering the sash Q() slowly the finger piece Q6 which also answers the purpose ot a weight 'torce-s the barbed head 18 of the latch 1S) against the bottom ot the track 15 and upon con'iing in contact with the first notch 1G in its path, the said head 18 is 'tore-ed therein thus forming a locking means. lt should be understood in this connection that various minor lchanges can be resorted to within the scope ot the appended claim without departing -from or sacrificing any o'l the advantages o't the invention.
llaving thus 'fully described this invention what l claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is za The con'xbinatitm with a sash holder of a latch L shaped in :formation having a barb at one extremity, the said barb having a rounded outer tace, a` linger piece .tor operating the latch, bosses upon said latch, a track having notches therein, reinforcements tor the said notches, consisting ot U shaped members, and a wedge shaped entrance to the notches.
In testimony wherco't I a'llix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
