PAPER DISH AND HOLDER THEREFOR Filed Sept. 7, 1946 2 Sheets-Sheet 1 Patented Feb. 27, 1951 Walter E. Amber-g, Beverly Shores, ma, assignor; by mesne assignments, to Lily-Tulip Cup Cor= poration, New York, N. Y., a corporation of Delaware Application September v. 1946, Serial No. 695,495
7 Claims. (01. 65-61) This invention relates to paper dishes and holders therefor.
An object of this invention is to provide an improved conical paper dish which may be more readily received and positively secured in a holder for lining the same.
Another object of this invention is to provide an improved holder for conical paper dishes which will more readily receive and positively secure the paper dishes therein.
A further object of this invention is to provide an improved holder for conical paper dishes which may be readily stacked.
In carrying out the objects of the invention, the paper dish is preferably formed from a circular paper blank and provided with diametrically opposed folded sectoral flaps or plaits. The holder for the paper dishes preferably includes -a base and "a conical bowl which is provided with d-iametri'cally opposed circumferentially extending 'fingers for receiving the diametrically opposed folded flaps or plaits and which is provided with an annular groove'conforming to the dimension of the bottom of the base to facilitate stacking.
The paper dish is receivedin the conical bowl and by rotating the conical bowl relative to the paper dish the folded flaps or plait are received under the fingers. Because the papendi'sh is provided with diametrically opposed folded flaps or plaits the maximu'mrelative rotation required to receive the folded'flaps or plaits under the 'fingers is limited to substantially 180 degrees of rotatio'n thereby facilitating greatly the reception of the dish in the holder. Since the holder is provided with opposed fingers for receiving the opposed folded ham or plaits, the paper dish is positively secured in the holder at opposed points thereby greatly reducing the tendency of the paper dish from working free from the holder. The annular groove in the holder permits stacking of the holders one on top of the other thereby avoiding the necessity of pyramid type stacking and saving stacking space.
Other objects and advantages will become apparent to those skilled in the art upon reference to the accompanying specification, claims, and drawing, in which- Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the holder of this invention;
Fig. 2 is aside elevational view of the holder shown in position for receiving a paper dish from an inverted stack "of dishes;
Fig. 3 is aperspective view of the paper dish;
Fig. 4 is a partial plan view of the paper blank for forming the'pap'er dish;
Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view through the holder;
Fig. .6 is a partial sectional view through .the holder and finger taken along .the line ii-5 'of Fig. 5;
Fig. 7 is a view illustrating the stacking of a plurality of holders.
The paper dish of this invention is generally designated at I!) while the holder therefor is generally designated at I l. The holder H is adapted to receive the paper dish ill and may operate to pick up a dish from a plurality of dishes contained in an inverted stack of dishes 12, as 11:- lustrated in Fig. 2.
The paper dish it is formed from a circular paper blank 13, as shown in Fig. 4. The paper blank I3 is provided with opposed creases l4 and I5 extending diametrically through the center of the blank for forming diametrically opposed folded sectoral flaps or plaits 16, as illustrated in Fig. 3. The creases I4 appear on the outside of the dish and the creases l5 appear on the inside thereof. When the folded flaps or plaits 16 are formed along the creases [:4 and 15, the paper dish assumes a conical shape. The flaps or plaits l5 face in the same rotative direction.
The holder ll includes a base 20 and a conical bowl 2|. The bottom of the base 2i] terminates in an annular foot 22 and the upper portion of the base 20 terminates in a screw-threaded ring 2%. The base 2i! may be provided with reinforcing ribs 24.
The bowl 2| is provided with a screw threaded extension 26 to telescopically and screw-threadedly receive the ring '23 whereby the bowl 2! is carried by the base 20. The bowl 2| may be provided with recesses 21 to accommodate a suitable tool to assist in the assembly of the bowl on the base. The bowl 2| is provided with a'pair of oppositely disposed openings 28 and circumferentially extending spring fingers "29 secured to the iboiwl .2! by rivets 30 overlie the openings 28 and facein the same rotative direction.
The conical paper dish I3 is received in the conical bowl '2i and when the dish and'bowl are relatively rotated, the opposed folded flaps or plaits [*6 are received under the opposed fingers 29. The flaps are warped 'by the action of the fingers .219 and are tightly secured between the fingersZQ and the edges of the openings 23. In this way the .flaps iii .are securely held in place under the fingers 2-9. Because the paper dish .is
provided .with diametrically opposed flaps, the
maximum relative rotation required to receive the folded ,fiaps under the fingers is limited .to substantially 180 degrees of rotation, thereby facilitating greatly the reception of the dish in :the holder. Since the holder is provided with-op- .posed fingers for receiving the opposed flaps, the paper dish is positively secured in the holder ,at opposed points, thereby greatly reducing the tendency of the paper dish from working free from the holder.
The bowl 21 is provided with an annular .groove 32 which conforms in dimension to the annular foot 2120f the baseliland preferably-the outside ofthe bowlj2-l is enlarged as at 3-3 for .the
purpose of accommodating the groove 32. The groove 32 is adapted to receive the foot 22 of the base of another holder so that a plurality of holders may be stacked one on top of the other without any danger of tipping. In this way considerable space is saved in the stacking of holders for with this arrangement it is no longer necessary to stack holders in pyramid fashion.
While for purposes of illustration one form of this invention has been disclosed, other forms thereof may. become apparent to those skilled in the art upon reference to this disclosure and, therefore, this invention is to be limited only by the scope of the appended claims and prior art.
