This invention relates to improved sundae dishes or liners constructed of waterproof paper or the like, and metal holders therefor to permit a plaited or folded paper dish to be engaged or inserted in the folder in such a manner that a pair of plaited portions of the dish are engaged between a pair of offset tongues integrally formed in the holder for retaining the sundae dish in the holder with the conical body portion of the dish seated in contact with the inner surface of the holder.

It is an object of this invention to provide an improved metal holder for supporting and handling cups, dishes or receptacles formed of paper or other fragile material.

It is also an object of this invention to provide a metal holder for containers or the like adapted to be readily engaged over a pair of plaits which are integrally formed on the exterior of a paper dish by folding the dish blank along creased lines.

It is a further object of this invention to provide a metal holder for sundae dishes and the like, said holder having a portion of the body section thereof cut awayto form a pair of integrally deflected tongues, permitting the holder to be readily engaged over a plaited exterior portion of .apaper sundae dish or the like. i

It is furthermore an object of this invention to provide an improved metal holder having a guide opening in the body portionthereof forming a pair of deflected tongues whereby the holder may be readily engaged over a sundae dish plaited to form an. exterior paper gripping section adapted to be, laced throughthe guide opening in the holder positioning the tongues between the body portion of the sundae dish and the exterior tapered section thereof.

Still another object of this invention is toprovide an improved method of applying sundae dishes to holders, which method consists of assembling a plurality of nested sundae dishes, and then slidably applying to the endmost sundae dish an apertured holder in such a manner that a plaited exterior tapered section of the sundae dish is interlocked with a pair of spaced tongues formed on said holder to cause the sundae dish to be interlocked in the holder against rotation with respect thereto.

Still another object of the invention is to provide an improved method of engaging sundae dishes in holders, which method consists in providing a stack of nested sundae dishes in a position to permit a holder to be slidably engaged over the uppermost sundae dish so that a tapered exterior holder section of the sundae dish is adapted to slide through a guide opening in the holder, and cover a pair of tongues formed on the holder whereby the sundae dish may be'readily removed from the stack and may be retained in the holder against rotation with respect thereto.

It is an important object of this invention to provide an improved sundae dish holder having guides in the body section thereof, and provided with a pair of oppositely positioned tongues which are deflected inwardly,

- permitting the holder to be readily engaged over a tapered exterior section of a conlcal sundae dish to position the holder tongues between the tapered section and the body of the dish to hold the dish and holder in proper assembledrelation ready for use.

Other and further important objects of this invention wills be apparent from the disclosures in the specification and the accompanying drawings.

The invention (in a preferred form) is illustrated in the drawings and hereinafter more fully described.

embracing a tubular standard 1, the lower end of which is enlarged and terminates in a foot or base 2. Braised or otherwise rigidly secured on the upper end of the hollow standard 1 is a frusto-conical shaped body or cup 3 arranged with the tapered or small open end thereof downward with the opening therein registering with the opening of the upper end of the standard 1. The margin of the large upper end of the body 3 is deflected outwardly and rolled to form a rounded bead 4. One section pf the lower portion of the frusto-conical body 3 is cut out to afford a pair of substantially oval or scroll-shaped openings 5, the inner abutting end of which communicate with a restricted neck or passage 6 which extends downwardly and terminates in an enlarged opening 7, the lower end of which is open and registers with a curved notch or recess 8, provided in the upper margin of the standard 1 as clearly illustrated in Figure 5. The peculiar T-shape arrangements of the openings 5, 6 and 7 in the body 3 of the holder form a tapered holding or guide tip or projection 9 between the openings 5 and a pair of separated adjacently positioned rounded fingers or tongues 10 which are deflected inwardly out of the plane of the inner conical wall of the holder body 3. The guide tip 9 as clearly illustrated in Figure 5, is positioned to point midway between the two deflected tongues 10 and serves as a guide for properly engaging a sundae dish in the improved holder as hereinafter more fully described.

The improved holder of this invention is adapted for'use with a particular type of paper sundae dish forming the subject mat ter of my'copending application for patent, U. S. Serial No. 318,056, filed November 8, 1928, for a Sundae dish.

The sundae dish adapted for use in combination with the improved holder hereinbefore described, comprises a circular blank constructed of waterproof paper or the like with said blank having one quadrant thereof provided with a group of four radial creases extending from the center of the blank outwardly to the outer periphery thereof: The four creases are denoted by the reference numerals 11, 12, 13, and 14, with the distance between the creases 12 and 13 being twice that of the distance between the creases 11 and 12 or the distance between the creases 13 and 14. The two outermost creases 11 and 14 are spaced equal distances from therespective inner creases 12 and 13 respectively.

The sundae dish is adapted to be shaped or formed by creasing or bending the blank along the creases 11, 12, 13 and 14 in such a manner that the portions of the blank between the creases 11 and 12 and between the creases 13 and 14 form resilient tapered spring plaits 15 which are adapted to be positioned between the exterior of the conical body section 16 forming the sundae dish and a tapered intermediate segment 17 formed between the creases 12 and 13 and being substantially twice the size of the plait segments 15. When the blank is properly formed into a sundae dish, thecreases 11 and 14 abut one another, as illustrated in Figure 3, and the intermediate or large segment 17 is disposed to cover the segments 15 and to bridge or overlap the abutting creases 11 and 14 to form the completed sundae dish.

The improved sundae dishes are arranged in' a stacked nested relation and may be placed within a suitable magazine or container permitting the improved holder, when grasped by the base, to be slidably applied, without rotation, over the exterior of the outermost sundae dish in such a manner that the guide tip or pointer 9 of the holder is applied at the apex of the outer or intermediate tapered segment 17 permitting said guide pointer 9 to travel along the center line of said segment 17 whereby the tapered end of the intermediate section 17 and the tapered end of the plaits 15 are guided into the openings 5 and over the inwardly deflected tongues 10 with the abutting creases 11 and 14 passing between or through the restricted passageway 6 between said tongues and allowing the apex or tapered portion of the exterior folded sec: tion of the sundae dish'to be guided through the opening 7 and behind the curved recess 8 of the standard 1, allowing the apex of the sundae dish to be projected through the opening in the lower end of the holder body section 3, and into the hollow standard 1 as clearly illustrated in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings.

It will thus be noted that the metal holder is readily applied to the outermost sundae dish in the stack with the plaited or folded exterior portion of the sundae dish laced or guided through the opening in the sundae dish holder in such a manner that the guide 7 tongues 10 slide into position between the plaits 15 and the outer surface of the conical body portion of the sundae dish. In this manner of applying the sundae dish holder to a plaited sundae dish, a portion of the intermediate tapered section 17 is exposed through the openings 5 and over the tongues 10 permitting the forefinger of a persons hand to be pressed against this exposed portion of the section 17 to retain the sundae dish within is permitted to be drawn out of the lower end base for supporting said body.

When the holder is applied to the outermost sundae dish in a stack and the plaited or folded portion of the dish is guided through the openings in the body portion of the holder and over the deflected tongues 10 thereof, the spring action of the plaits 15 act to hold the engaged sundae dish locked Within the holder so that the engaged sundae dish may bewithdrawn from the stack with the withdrawal of the holder without even necessitating the application of pressure by the forefinger of a persons hand upon the exposed portion of the tapered intermediate section 17 of the sundae dish. Attention is also called to the fact that when a sundae dish is engaged in a holder, thetwo tongues 10 act to hold the sundae dish against rotation within the conical body section of the holder. The plaited and tapered exterior portion of the sundae dish serves as a resilient holder whereby the sundae dish maybe readily engaged in the improved holder with the tapered exterior portion positioned to the outside of the pair of tongues 10 and to the inside of the guide tip 9.

The improved method of assembling the sundae dishes with a holder of the type described consists of depositing a stack of nested sundae dishes in a magazine or container wherein the stack of sundae dishes is inverted so that the exterior of the uppermost cup is exposed .or accessible to permit the holder when grasped by its base, to be slidably applied upon the uppermost sundae dish with the apertured portion of the holderpositioned over the exterior plaited or folded tapered portion of the dish to permit the guide tip 9 to be engaged over the tapered intermediate section17, thereby guiding the plaits 15 over the exterior of the deflected tongues '10 allowing the exterior plaitedlportion of the sundae dish to be lockingly engaged between the guide ti 9 and the tongues 10, so that when the hol er is retracted, the uppermost sundae dish will be removed therewith off of the top of the stack.

When a stack of sundae dishes is deposited in a dispenser or magazine with the stack in an upright position sothat the tapered exterior of the lowermost sundae dish is exposed through the lower portion of the magazine, the sundae dish holder may be applied by sliding the same upwardly over the lowermost cup to engage the plaited portion of the dish between t e guide tip 9 and the tongues 10 after which the person withdrawing the dish applies the'forefinger over the exposed portion of the intermediate segment 17 to press the folded exterior portion of the sundae dish against the tongues so that when the holder is withdrawn the lowermost sundae dish is held seated within the holder and of the magazine holding the stack of sundae dishes.

Having described the improved holder and the sundae dish to be used in combination therewith and the method of assembling the holder and dishes, it will 'be understood that changes and modifications may be made in the holder and dish and that obvious steps in the methods of assembly may be changed without departing from the spirit of the invention and it is therefore not purposed to limit the patent granted hereon otherwise than necessitated by the scope of the appended claims.

I claim as my invention:

1. A holder for plaited sundae dishes of conical shape, said holder comprising a frusto-conical body arranged with its small end downward and open, a-base rigidly secured thereon and open at its upper end to communicate with the opening in the lower end of the body, said body having a substantially key-shaped opening therein affording a guide tip and a pair of separated inwardly deflected tongues for engaging the plaited portion of a sundae dish.

2. A holder for folded sundae dishes, said holder comprising a conical body arranged with its small ,end downward and open, an

open base supporting said body, and a guidev tip and a pair of inwardly deflected tongues formed in the body forengaging the folded portion of a sundae dish.

3. A holder for folded sundae dishes, said holder comprising, a body formed to fit the exterior of a sundae dish and having an open ing in one side near the lower end thereof to afford a guide tip and a pair of inwardly deflected tongues to permit the body to be engaged on the folded portion of'a sundae dish, and a base rigidly connected to the body to support the same. i

4. A holder for paper sundae dishes, said holder comprising a body formed to fitthe exterior of a sundae dish and having ortions of the walls of the body formed to afford a guide tip and a pair of tongues ermitting the body to be readily engage on the folded portiongof a sundae dish, and a base for supporting the body-of the holder. 1 5. A holder for folded paper dishes, said holder comprising a body formed to fit the exterior of a dish, a base supporting said body, and an opening in the side of the body affording a pair of separated deflected tongues to engage the folded portion of a dish to hold the dish seated within the body of the holder. a

A holder for containers, said holder comprising a body having a substantially key-shaped opening in one side thereof providing a plurality of tongue members and a guide ti to permit the body to be engaged with a folded portion of a container, and a 35 ,and a body section mounted thereon having opening in one side of the lower portion- 7. A holder for conical paper containers, having folded tapered portions formed on the exterior thereof, said holder comprising a supporting base, and a conical body section rigidly mounted thereon and having openings in one side thereof forming three tongue members permitting the body section to be engaged over a container with the tapered folded portion of the container laced through the-opening and engaged between said tongue members.

8. A holder for conical folded containers, said holder comprising a base portion, a body section rigidly mounted thereon and having a substantially key-shaped opening in one side thereof, registering with an opening formed in said base section to permit the holder to be engaged with the. conical dish with the folded portion of the dish interengaged with the body and base.

9. A holder for conical dishes, said holder comprising a hollow base having a recess in one side of the upper end thereof, a body section rigidly secured on the upper end of the base and having a substantially T-shaped thereof registering with the opening in the base and affording a guide tip and a pair of deflected tongues in the body to permit the holder to be interengaged with the folded portion of a conical dish with the apex of the dish and the lowered tapered portion of the folded section of the dish projecting into the upper end of the base.

10. A sundae dish holder comprising a base a pair of separated projections and a guide member integrally formed thereon to engage opposite sides of a folded section of a sundae dish to hold the dish locked within the holder against rotation.
