This invention relates to sanitary holders for frankfurters, sandwiches or other articles of food, and has for one of its objects the provision of such a holder in which the article of food may be held while eating without the fingers of the eater coming in contact with the food.
Another object of the invention is to provide such a food holder of any desired shape which is open at the top and one end thereof and made either of a blank cut of cardboard, paper or any firm material that can be flexed, or it may be molded in one piece of any suitable material of uniform strength of side walls, bottom and end.
A further object of the invention is to provide a finger-hole in the end wall to permit the finger topush the sandwich or other article of food out through the open end.
Another object is to produce a device of the character described in which the maximum simplicity of construction and operation is secured.
Other objects and advantages will appear as the nature of the improvements is better understood, the invention consisting substantially in the novel arrangement and co-relation of parts herein fully described, and illustrated in the accompanyin drawings, wherein similar reference characters are used to describe corresponding parts throughout the several views, and then finally pointed out and specifically defined and indicated in the appended claims.
The disclosure made the basis of exemplifying the present inventive concept suggests a practical embodiment thereof, but the invention is not to be restricted to the exact details of this disclosure, and the latter, therefore, is to be understood from an illustrative, rather than a restrictive standpoint.
The inventive idea involved is capable of receiving a variety of mechanical expressions, one of which, for the purpose of illustration, is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of one form of my improved holder.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the blank from which the holder is made.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of a modified form of the invention, and
Figure 4 is a perspective view of a further modified form of the invention.
Referring now to Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings in detail 5 indicates one form of my holder which may be stamped out of a blank 6 made of paper, cardboard or any other suitable material which may be flexed. The blank 6 is 5001 ed along backed by a thin sheet of paper or Cellophane horizontal lines I and 8 and along a vertical line 9, the former dividing the blank into a bottom wall l and side walls II and I2, and the latter into a central end portion l3 and side end sections l4 and I5. The end section 14 is separated from the central end portion l3 by a slit l6 and the end portion 15 is severed from the said central end portion l3 by a slit II. The end sections l4 and I are provided with locking tabs l8 which are adapted to interlock when the blank is in bentup position. The said end portions are further provided with cutouts 19 which register with a cutout 20 in the central end section to form a finger opening 2| when the said blank isbent up to form the holder 5.
It will be seen by referring to Figure 1 that when the holder is bent up the sections I3, I4 and I5 form an end wall. The said wall may be formed by merely interlocking thesections l4 and I5 and reinforcing same by the central section l3 or the said sections may be secured together by either pasting, stapling or in any other suitable manner.
It will further be seen that the side walls II and I2 may be flexed by the fingers to firmly hold the frankfurter or sandwich between the said wall without the fingers contacting the food, and as the eater progresses,the food may be pushed outwardly through the open end 25 by the insertion of a, finger into the opening 2| which may be so strip 26 which may be secured at one end edge thereof to the holder. The said strip 26 forms an insulation between the finger and the food.
If desirable, the outer surfaces of the holder may have advertising matter printed thereon as indicated at 21.
In Figure 3, I have shown a modified form of my invention, wherein, instead of making the holder angular, I make same curved. In this form of the invention, I may mold the holder 5a out of pulp or other suitable material and the body portion 6a and the end wall Ma. may be of uniform thickness and strength, or the body portion may be flexible as in the form of my invention shown in Figure 1. If desirable, I may provide this form of my invention with the finger opening 2| and backing 26.
In Figure 4, I have shown a further modified form of my invention which is particularly adapted for holding a hamburger 30. In this form of the invention, the side walls 3| and 32 are adapted to be flexed against the hamburger for gripping same. Besides the side walls 3| and 32, the holder is provided with a top wall 33 and an end wall 34, the said end wall having a finger opening and a sanitary protecting window-tissue or strip 36 which may be made of any suitable material including paper. This form of my invention is also adaptable to be used in connection with certain forms of sandwiches. The shape of the holder may be altered to conform to any style, type or shape of sandwich.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that I have provided a holder for frankfurters, sandwiches, etc. which may be made of any suitable material and of any suitable shape and which is sanitary in all respects as the fingers of the users cannot come in contact with the food with which it is used.
It will further be seen that the food can be pushed outwardly of the holder during the progress of eating by the pressure of a finger against the window through the finger opening which. maybe of any shape, such as oval, square, semiprising a base, side walls of an even height having their ends terminating flush with ends of the base, a single end wall risingfrom the base between the side walls and having a finger receiving recess at the top edge thereof, and a backing of thin flexible material for the finger receiving recess secured to the holder, said side walls being flexible whereby they may be flexed inwardly and an article in the holder grasped.
2. A holder of the character described formed from a single blank of sheet material rectangular for the major portion of its length, scoring lines extending longitudinally of the blank and dividing the blank into a central base portion and a pair of side portions to be folded upwardly and form side walls of an even height, a scoring line extending transversely of the blank near one end thereof for its full width and defining a central end portion and side end portions, the side end portions being severed from the central end portion, the central end portion having its free end formed with a recess and the side end .portions being cut to form tongues adapted to interlock and hold the end portions in overlying relation to each other to form an end wall for the holder, the side end portions having recesses to register with the recess of the center end portion and together therewith form a finger receiving passage in the end wall.
