Attorney Patented F eb. 27, 1951 UNlTED STATES PATENT OFFICE 7 LIPSTICK TEMPLATE Edith C. Hess, Chicago, Ill.
Application February 4, 1950, Serial No. 142,455
3 Claims.
My invention relates to lipstick templates for painting the lips, or for the application of lipstick tothe lips, of an individual.
The present custom of applying lipstick engenders difficulty in that the person applying the lipstick does not have a proper outline or demarcation for producing uniformity in the result of applying lipstick to the lips. The configuration varies from time to time, and is dependent on the skill and steadiness of the hand of the individual applying the lipstick.
In order to overcome the foregoing difficulties, it is a prime object of my invention to provide a lipstick template which will assure that the one applyingthe lipstick to the lips will have a constant or uniform configuration inscribed by the use of the template comprising my invention.
A further object of my invention is to provide a lipstick template of the foregoing character which is arcuately shaped to be configurative to the facial features, so as to facilitate fitting the same as well as locating the same in the proper place on the physiognomy of an individual.
A further object of my invention is to provide lipstick template means which embraces bit means to be held securely in the mouth so as to firmly locate the template means for lipstick application.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a lipstick template of the aforementioned character which has flexible bit means so as to permit localization and equalization of the template with respect to the facial features.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a rigid type of bit which is peened, or otherwise secured, or cemented to the template structure proper.
A still further object of my invention is to provide transparent template means havingtransparent template ,panel means secured thereto in snap-on and off relationships.
And a still further object of my invention is to provide template means of the aforementioned character which is economical to manufacture in quantities, which will facilitate the application of lipstick to the lips, and which will require neither special training nor experience to use the same.
Other objects and ancillary advantages inherent in my invention will become apparent from an examination of the accompanying drawings, having further elucidation in the foregoing description which is consistent therewith; in which like elements are designated by like numerals, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a top view of one form of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a front view looking in the direction of the arrows 22 on Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a top view of a slightly modified form of my invention.
Fig. 4 is a front view thereof looking in the direction of arrows 44 on Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a cross-sectional view taken substantially on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 is a front view of one element of that form of my invention illustrated and embraced in Figs. 3 to 5.
Fig. 7 is another slightly modified form indicating the structural connection or assembly of the bit element comprising an important feature of my invention.
Referring to the various views, my invention, in one of its forms, is generally designated 9, and is constructed arcuately in shape as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2 in order to be configurative with the anatomical features of the face 8 of a person.
The said template 9 is provided with an opening l3 which is configurative with the composite area of the upper and lower lips, or that section of the upper and lower lips 16 and I5, respectively, to which lipstick I4 is to be applied. The cut-out portion, or template outline, i3 is made in the following manner: the lips of the individual first have carefully applied thereto lipstick to the configuration desired by the particular person desirin to use the template. An impression thus results designated E8.
The said impression l8 made on the template is from the lips pressed thereagainst in order that the template may be subsequently cut out to the configuration I3. The application of lipstick with my template hence will assure evenness, uniformity and will eliminate the particular care that must mandatorily be observed, especially at the outline of the lipstick area l5, [6 at the outside of the lips. The said template 9 is provided with bores l2 to which a flexible plastic bit I0 is secured by means of knots H or other means of security. The bit is held firmly between the teeth 23 after the template 9 is located in the proper position the teeth 23 thus serving to hold the bit in place, in turn preventing accidental movement or dislodgement of the template 9 after it had once been adjusted and set in proper position.
Another form of my invention is illustrated in Figs. 3 to 6, inclusive, in which case the template 24 is provided with an oval-shaped opening, is also arcuate in formation, and is adapted to receive in secure engagement therewith the template pane II which is made of slightly thicker plastic material, and has a perimetral groove on its edge, the said groove I9 fitting configuratively in the opening 29 so that it may be snapped into place or removedas needed. The said template is also provided with bores 20 to which is secured a bit means 2! made of flexible plastic material and knotted at the ends 22 so as to hold it firmly in place.
The impression on the template pane H is made as heretofore described-namely; animpression I8 is made, after the lips of the individual have been carefully colored with the lipstick, by pressing the template I! against the lips thus affording an outline which is subsequently cut out to the configuration indicated at 20 and which is a composite opening perimetrally-shaped to be configurative with the area to be covered and conforming to the exposed portions of the lower lip I5 and the upper lip [6 when the mouth isclosed.
The advantage of the construction illustrated in Figures 3-6 is that it will permit a series of template panes H to be removably and interchangeably secured to the template 24, thus making available to the user a variety of template panes ll" of different configurations.
A slight modification is also contemplated wherein the bit 25 is made of a rigid, rather than a flexible, material and is provided with an undercut portion 2'! to be secured to a template 25 and retained firmly in place by cementing or peening the same as indicated at 28. This, of course, will also afford a fairly good means of locating the template with respect to the anatomical facial features or configurations of the individual applying lipstick.
All dominant elements of the alternate forms of my invention are made of transparent plastic 1naterial--namely; the template 9; .the template 2 the template pane or window I! are all made of substantially thin transparent plastic material so as to permit an individual applying lipstick, utilizing my template, to see the relationship of the lipstick area to relate it proportionally to the other facial features; that is,.the relationship of the lipstick area to the nose, the mouth, the chin, and the cheeks, so that the individual using the template in position .for applying'the lipstick will not be misledsnor prevented from making the correct, application.
It goes without saying, that with the use .of
" the lipstick template which I have herein ,dis-
closed, the work of applying lipstick is hastened; it is time-saving; it removes-all difiicultiesyit eliminates particular skill, and will assure :uni- .formity of lipstickapplication iat'all times.
The application of lipstick with my transparent type of template willpermit the individual tordo it without introducing anydifficulties, or :without requiring retraining of the individual, forby virtue of its transparency it will afford means for applying lipstick in accordance .with the .practices to which that individual had become -accustomed prior to using the template. 'In other words, it will not require special practice .nor experience in order to :utilize the template-since it will permit applying lipstick =in just asnormal a manner as ordinarily with the exception that the foregoing advantages will result.
Although I have hereindescribed rather succinctly the nature and use of my invention so.
that persons skilled in the art will have no difficulty apprising themselves-of the teaching thereof and, inasmuchas thedisclosure'is susceptible of various alterations, modifications, and improvements, I hereby reserve the right to all modifications, alterations, and improvements falling within the scope and spirit of my invention, as Well as any modifications that are embraced suggestively in the accompanying drawings, and any that may come within the purview of the foregoing description; my invention to be limited only by the appended claims.
Having thus :disclosed and revealed my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. Lipstick template means of the character described, comprising transparent template means accurately shaped to fit the anatomy of the lips and cheeks of a person, an opening substantially centrally thereof configurative with the composite areas and shapes of the upper and'lower lips of said person to furnish exposed lip areas and act as an outline for applying lipstick to :the saidlip areas, and bit .mcans secured to the said template means to be retained in the mouth of the said person to localize and equalize firm positioning of the said template means, thesaid template means including a lipstick ;template member provided with an opening substantially centrally thereof, a template .pane memberof .mating perimetral configuration but slightly larger than the saidlastementioned opening, and groove means about the-perimetral edge of the said template .pane member .of identical configuration andmagnitudeas that of the said last-mentioned opening to .permit snap-on and off assembly of the said template .pane memher to the said template member.
2. Lipstick template means of the character described, comprising transparent template means arcuately-shaped to fit the anatomy of the lips and cheeks of a person, an opening substantially centrally thereof configurative with the composite 'areasandshapes-of the upper and lower lips of said person to furnish exposed lip areasand act-as an outline for applying lipstick 'to the said lip areas, and flexible 'bit'means sei cured to the said template means to be retained in the 'mouth of the said person to localize -and equalize firm positioning of the said template means, the said template means including alipstick template member providedwith anopening substantially centrally thereof, a template pane 'member ofmating perimetral configuration'but slightly larger than the said last-mentioned opening,'and groove means about the perimetral edge ofthe said template-pane member of 'identical configuration and magnitude as'that-of the said last-mentioned opening'to permit snap-on and on" assembly of the said template pane member to thesaid template'member.
3. Lipstick template means of the character described, comprising transparent template means arcuately shaped to fit the anatomy of the lips and cheeks of a person, an opening substantially centrally thereof configurative with the composite areas and shapes of the upper and 'lowerlips of said person 'to furnish exposed .lip
areas and act as an outline for applying lipstick to the said lip areas, and rigid bit means secured to the said template means to be retained in the mouth of the said person to "localize and equalize firm positioning of the said template means, the said template-means including a lipstick template memberprovided with an opening substantially centrally thereof, atemplate pane -member of -mating perimetral configuration "but slightly larger than the said last-mentioned 5 opening, and groove means about the perimetral edge of the said template pane member of identical configuration and magnitude as that of the said last-mentioned opening to permit snap-on and 011 assembly of the said template pane mem- 5 her to the said template member.
