Feb. 1 9. V E. VOLKMAN LIP MARKING GUIDE Filed Sept. 8, 1924 n a 1 0 u 0 Edward Vo'lfimdn WM.
To all whom it may concern:
Patented Feb. 10, 1925.
1,526,028 PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD VOLKMAN, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
LIP-MARKING GUIDE.
Application filed September 8, 1924. Serial No. 736,484.
Be it known that I, EDWARD VOLKMAN, a citizen of the United States,'residing at Jersey City, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lip-Marking Guides, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved guide frame primarily adapted to be used in providing a mechanical means for guiding and assisting the user of a lip stick, or other form of cosmetic, in emphasizing and rendering natural the application of such. cosmetics to the human features.
Photographers, artists and others engaged in similar occupations have considerable difficulty in their efforts toward securing or persuading their subjects to properly apply a cosmetic to the lips for the purpose of clearly devloping the natural outlines of these features; frequently the lips are touched with a cosmetic so that a grotesqueor unnatural appearance is presented, and
therefore the present invention provides an improved frame which may be readily placed over the lips and adjusted to conform to their shape so that the cosmetic may be applied accurately and skillfully to the end of presenting a natural appearance. In this connection, however, it will be understood that the guide frame is not limited merely for professional work but is adapted for use by anyone employing a lip stick or the like who desires a natural and skillful application of the same.
In accordance with the invention there is provided a guide frame consisting of a pair of guide members which are shaped to conform to the bounding curvature of the human lips, the guide frame being constructed so that the same may be held between the teeth of the user and thus securely located with the guide members in proper position and so spaced as to receive between them the lips of the user, the guide members serving to provide a physical means limiting the movement of the lip stick and thereby preventing the latter from contacting with portions of the month not to be touched, the arrangement of the guide members permitting the operation to be quickly accomplished and witha very considerable degree of accuracy.
For a further understanding of the invention refer n e i to be h d t the ol e ing description and the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a view showing the guide frame as applied to the mouth of a user,
Figure 2 is a plan view thereof,
Figure 3 is a front elevation,
Figure 4 is a detail sectional View on the line H of Figure 3,
Figure 5 is a view showing various types of guide members employed in connection with the frame,
Figure 6 isan enlarged front elevation of one of the binding postsemployed in connection with the frame,
Figure 7 is a vertical sectional view on the line 7 7 of Figure 6, and
Figure 8 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 88 of Figure 7.
Referring more particularly to the details of the invention thenumeral 1 designates my improved cosmetic applying and guiding frame. This frame in the specific form of the invention disclosed is formed to include a mouth piece 2, which may consist of apiece of wire bent to provide an enlarged mouth receiving portion 3 which terminates in outwardly and laterally extending portions 4. These portions terminate in eyes 5, which are received within grooves 6 formed in a pair of vertical bindnon-c-ircular in form so that the posts 7 will be precluded from rotation within the eyes.
Above and below the eyes 5 the posts are formed with grooves 8 and with transverse bores 9, which are adapted for the removable ing posts 7 The grooves are preferably frictionally clamped in adjusted yet secured v engagement with the posts 7. In practice, one end'ofeach of the guide members is positioned within another of the bores 9,
and firmly retained therein, while the other end of this guide member is positioned within one of the grooves 8 and adjustably clamped therein. By the provision of the open sided grooves, it is possible to readily remove the guide member from the frame, bend or flex the same to assume the desired shape and then replace the guide member in the frame Without disturbing its fixed position of adjustment. In other Words there will be no rebinding necessary on the part of said guide members because of the adjustment thereof and the insertion in the molding frame.
In view of the foregoing it will be seen that there is provided a simple form of device adapted to be employed by lip stick users for the purpose of enabling such users to conveniently and skillfully apply a cosmetic upon the lips in a manner calculated to produce an elfect of complete naturalness and to avoid the likelihood of m'arring the appearance of the lips by improper use of the cosmetic. The frame is capable of being quickly adjusted to suit the individual requirements of the user. Further, since the frame is formed from metal, the same will be preferably nickel plated so as to avoid oxldization and to keep the same in a cleanly and sanitary condition. It will be understood, that while I have shown and described what I consider to be the preferred form of my invention, nevertheless,
I do not desire to be limited to the single form, since the invention is ca able of findmg expression in many other p ysical forms of construction, the extent and scope of the invention being disclosed in the follow- .mg claims.
What is claimed is:
frame adapted to be held Within the mouth of the user, and an adjustable guide structure carried b said frame and having a space provided therein conforming to the contour of the lips.
2. A lip marking guide comprising a frame having an opening formed therein,
' 'bers' 1. A lip marking guide comprising a the bounding edges of said opening being izhaped to conform to the curvature of the IPS.
3. A lipmarking device comprising a mouth piece, and a guide structure carried by said mouth piece having an opening formed therein, the edges of said opening conforming substantially to the contour of the lips.
4. A lip marking guide comprising a mouth piece, and a pair of guide members formed with said mouth piece and shaped to conform to the curvature of the lips.
5. A lip marking guide comprising a mouth piece, and a pair of guide members secured to the ends of said mouth piece, said guide members being shaped to conform to the curvature of the lips.
6. A lip marking guide comprising a mouth piece, and a pair of guide members adjust-ably secured to the outer ends of said mouth piece, said guide members conforming substantially to the curvature of the li s. 7. A lip marking guide comprising -a mouth. piece, binding posts provlded upon v the ends of-said mouth piece, and adjustable guide members removably connected with said posts 8, A device of the character described, a mouth piece, and a pair of Wire guide memadjustably secured to said mouth piece. a
.9. In a device of thev class described, a Wire mouth piece, a pair of posts secured to the ends of said mouth piece, and a pair of Wire guide members removably and adjustably secured to said posts.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
EDWARD VOLKMAN.
