Description

Aug. 11, 1931. J. A. PETNEL 3 GAUGE FOR THE APPLICATION OF LIP ROUGE Filed Jan. 19, 1929 Patented Aug. 11, 1931 PATENT OFFICE JOSEPH A. 2mm, 0! TROY, NEW YORK GAUGE FOR THE APPLICATION 01 LIP BOUGE Applicationfled January 19, 1989. Serial No. 383,785.
This invention relates to improvements in Figure 9 is a vertical section taken cenapplying rouge to the lips, and the objects of the improvements are:
1st: To provide a fast and economical way of applying rouge to the lips;
2nd: To provlde a gauge for insuring precision of line;
3rd: To provide an easy and convenient means for guiding the lip rouge to produce the desired form;
4th: To provide a means for guiding the user in making a perfect bow or any other desired form on the lips, and other parts of the body, by coloring the opening formed in said means.
Other objects and advantages of the present invention will become apparent from a study of the following description and drawings, which latter are merely illustrative and in which:
Fi ure 1 is a view showing the'method of using the present invention in applying rouge to the lips;
a Figure 2 is a front elevatlon showing the construction of the gauge for applying rouge to the lips;
Figure 3 is a vertical section, taken the line 33 of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a horizontal section, taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 2, and illustrates the raised edge of the inside of the opening :for the double purpose of preventing the guage from slipping and impressing the desired outline on the flesh;
Figure 5 is a front elevation of a reversible gauge or stencil, made of pliable transparent material, and shown as being provided with a fabric border;
Fi ure 6 is a horizontal section, taken on the line 66 of Figure 5;
Figure 7 is a side elevation of a modification of the guage, without a handle, and showing the curvature, in use, of the material comprising the gauge proper;
' Figure 8 is a perspective View of a solid form-fit gauge with a raised edge on the inside of the curved opening, adapted to imprint by pressing against the flesh, leaving outlines later to be filled in with rougeor other coloring material;' and tral ly of the modification shown in Fig ure a Referring to the drawings, wherein the invention is shown in preferred form:
The numeral 11, Figure 1, represents the face of a lady the lips of which protrude through the opening 18 in a plate 13 attached to a suitable handle 14 which may be held in the hand.. The plate 13 is composed of any suitable material and is molded so as to be form-fitting. When held against thelips in the manner shown the plate 13 follows the contour of the flesh adjacent the lips.
The opening 18 formed within the plate or gauge proper 13 provides a suitable guiding opening for the application of rouge to the lips which protrude through the opening, and assures precision and sharpness of line.
The raised edge 15, Figure 4, is formed on the curved edges of the opening 18, for the pur ose of firmly gripping the outer edges 0 the lips 12, thus preventing slipping of the gauge 13 and also indenting the outline of the opening 18 in the flesh, so that when the gauge is removed the user can fill in with rouge or other coloring material the space within the indentation.
In Figures 5 and 6 there is shown a modification in which a flexible plate is used, an opening being formed within this plate similar to the opening 18 formed within the plate 13 just described. A raised edge is also formed in this plate similar to the raised edge formed in the plate 13 and for a similar purpose. An edge or border 17 of fabric is attached to the plate on all sides for the purpose of preventing cutting into the flesh and also to improve the appearance of the plate. This plate is used by placing it over the lips and holding it firmly with the thumb and forefinger of one hand .against the face, at the same time working a pencil of rouge or other coloring material within the opening, thus coloring the lips.
If desired extra pressure may be used upon the plate and the plate removed whereupon the outline will be found to be impressed around the lips and this outline may .be
adjacent the top filled in by means of a sharp pointed pencil of rouge thus producing a perfectly rouged cupids bow upon the lips.
In Figure 7 there is shown a modification in which only the upper lip ma be rouged at a time, R the plate being so ormed that there is a protecting shieldover the lower lip.
In Figure 8 there is shown a modification in which a plate is provided with an opening having the shape of the opening 18 described in connection with the plate 13. This late has a raised edge similar to the raise edge formed on the edges of the open-. ing 18 in plate 13 and is used by placing the plate over the lips and applying a firm pressure thus indenting the contour of the desired form upon the lips. The plate is then removed and the space within the indentation filled in, as before, with rouge.
In Figure 9 there is shown a modification in which there is provided a simple formed plate without a handle, the plate being adapted to be held against the lips by the thumb and forefinger while the rouge pencil is used to fill the space within the opening in the plate.
While I have shown my invention in connection with a special structure and as operating in a definite manner, it is to be understood that I do not wish to limit my invention thereto, except insofar as it may be limited by the scope of the claims annexed hereto.
I claim:
1. As a new article of manufacture, a plate of flexible material having an outer marginal portion, said materialhaving an opening therein, an inner portion marginal to one part of the boundary edge of said opening for protecting the face of a user lip of a user, said edge being formed to define the top outline of a lip, and another inner portion marginal to another part of the boundary edge of said opening for protecting the face of a user adjacent theflower lip, said latter edge being formed to define'the lower outline of a 1p.
2. A device of the character described comprising a rectangular piece of flexible material consisting of an outer marginal portion, manipulable means carried by one part of said portion, said material having therein a central opening, an inner portion marginal to part of the boundary edge of said opening, and another inner portion marginal to an opposite part of said edge, said edge parts defining thetop and lower scribed comprising a rectangular piece of yieldable material having an outer boundary portion, a yieldable mangllpuating frame said lip.
