WALL BRACKET Filed Nov. 4, 1947 INVENTOR. Jam/w A. 5957 Patented Feb. 20, 1951 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE WALL BRACKET Jordan A. Post, Highland Park, Mich.
Application November 4, 1947, Serial No. 783,967
securing the bracket to a Wall or other supporting surface.
An object of the invention is to provide a wall brack;t which may be readily attached to a sup- -port by concealing means which form a part of the final assembly.
Another object of the invention is to provide a bracket which may be used for supporting a number of various shaped fixtures without altering the attaching means to accommodate the fixtures.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will more fully appear from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. l is a side elevational view illustrating the bracket as applied to a towel rack;
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the bracket used in conjunction with a tray;
Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view throu h the bracket showing the towel rack bar applied thereto;
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is a cross sectional view showing a modified form of securing means for the bracket; and
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary view showing a top plan View of the bracket.
The design selected for illustrating an embodiment of the invention comprises a pedestal l0, preferably of ornamental design, having an opening 12 extending longitudinally therethrough. The base portion [4 is counter-bored as at l6 and a larger counter-bore i8 is formed at the lower open end. The counter-bores I6 and H] are preferably molded and are square in contour.
The opposite end of the pedestal It has its outer periphery provided with oppositely disposed flat faces 25 and a shoulder 22 is spaced inwardly from the outer end of pedestal.
A thimble member 24, preferably square in shape, has an opening 26 in one side wall corresponding in shape to the projecting end 28, so that the thimble may be slipped over the end 28 with its open end projecting laterally of the pedestal. One side of the inner surface of the thimble 24 is tapered inwardly toward the closed end of the thimble, as at 30.
In the form of the invention shown in Fig. 3 a block 32 is secured to a support by screws 34. The block is shaped to fit the counter-bore l8 and has a projection 35 which fits the counterbore IS. The block 32 is internally threaded as as 35 to receive a bolt 38 extending through the longitudinal opening l2.
In mounting the bracket, the block 32 is secured to the support in desired location. The base end of the pedestal is then placed over the block and the bolt 38, having a head 40, is threaded into the threaded op'ning 35 with the head 40 securely holding the pedestal in position. The diameter of the head is larger than the distance between the two fiat faces 2!! on the end 28 so that it provides a shoulder between the outer end of the pedestal and the tapered surface 30. The thimble is then placed over the end 28 with the outer surface of the side wall, upon which the taper is formed, abutting the shoulder 22.
A locking key 42 is adapted to fit within the open end of the thimble 24 and has a bifurcated end 44 and a tapered surface 45 for sliding engagement with the tapered surface 35. The key 42 slides over the fiat surfaces 25 on the end 28 and fits between the head 45 and the tapered surface 30. A shoulder 48 is formed on th key 42 to fit the open end of the thimble 24.
The key 42 may be an integral part of the receptacle 50. When asszmbled, the key 42 forms a lock between the parts and conceals the securing means.
When it is desired to use the bracket in. connection with a towel rack, the outer end of the key is provided with a recessed opening 52, preferably square in shape, into which the bar of the rack extends.
Referring to Fig. 3, the rack bar 54 is shown in the form of a square tubular member having a movable end member 56 projecting beyond the end of the bar 54. This member 56 is slidably mounted in the tubular member 54 and is preferably formed from fiat sheet metal bent into U shape. A similar stamping 58 is press fitted into the tube to form a stop for a coil spring Bl] which urges the end member 56 outwardly. The tube has a length substantially equal to the distance between the end faces of the keys on a pair of spaced pedestals. To assemble the tube, the end members are sprung inwardly and then spring urged into the openings 52.
From the foregoing, it will be apparent that the device is easily manufactured, readily installed, and sturdy in construction. It will be understood that various changes including the size, shape, and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention, and it is not my intention to limit its ing in said pedestal, a head on said bolt for con 7 tact engagement with the reduced end portion and projecting laterally beyond the side walls of saidend portion, a thimble having an opening in the side wall thereof for fitting over saidhead and the end portion into engagement with said shoulder, and a key fitted into the open end of said thimble having portions, ensa eanlie. between said head and the inner surface of the, side Wall of said thimble.
p 2, A bracket comprising a pedestal having an opening extending longitudinally therethroug'h, a. base portion at one end of said: pedestal and a reduced end portion at the opposite end of said pedestalg a shoulder adjacent said reduced end portion, a bolt extending through the opening in pedestal, a head on said bolt for contact enfgagement with the reduced end: portion and proj ecting' laterally beyond the side walls of said Number end portion, a thimble having an opening in the side wall thereof for fitting over said head and the end portion into engagement with said shoulder; and a key fitted into the open end of said thimble having portions engageable between said head and the inner surface of the side wall of said thimble, the inner surface of said thimble and the outer surface of said key having intereng aging tapered surfaces for forming a Wedge l k: e ween said head and; said thimble.
