To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, JOHN ADoLrn J 0HN- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Meride'n, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut. have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Sliding Shoes for Furniture; and 1 do declare the following to be a full,clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use' the same.

This invention relates to sliding shoes for furniture but more particularly has refcrence to devices of this description in which the pintle inserted within the furniture leg has a rocking or oscillating connection with the shoe, the object being to preserve the fiat contact of the shoe with the floor when the article of furniture is tilted or is moved over uneven floors or obstructions such as rugs and carpets. This washer or plate 11 is confined by the. shouldered portion of the pintle and by the head 12 in such a manner that it is spaced from the plateB, and such washer or plate constitutes a head or enlargement at the lower end of the pintle which has a diameter greater than that of the opening 1, so that it willbe readily understood that the pintle cannot be withdrawn from said opening while at the same time the rounded portion 9 is free to have a rocking or oscillating movement directly on top of the plate 3.

flieferring to Fig. 2, the shoe 1 is made of glass, porcelain or any suitable composition, and is preferably formed with an undercut reduced portion 13 at the upper edge with which the outer edge of the cover plate 3 is interlocked.

In the instance of this particular shoe a hollow portion 14 is formed in the central part of the body of the shoe, and the plate around the opening a is depressed so as to form a concave seat for the protuberance 9, and the rounded headed part 12 at the lower extremity of the pintle contacts with the floor of this hollow portion, so that it will be clear that the pintle has a double rocking support which relieves the cover plate of more or less strain.

From the above description it will be noted that the pintle has a rocking portion which seats on top of the cover plate, and that the device itself has only four elements in its structure, thus affording a very simple and eflicient device.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is y 1. A sliding shoe for furniture, comprising a. circular flat and hollow base portion upwardly, a cover plate having its outer edge interlocked with said base and provided with a central opening that leads into the hollow part of the base, a pintle whose lower end extends through sa d opening and is spaced from 5 15, protuberance which I the Walls thereof, and is pintle immediately the wall thereof, means for securing said end as against withdrawal from said opening,

A sliding shoe for furniture, comprising a flat bottomed hollow base having its edges curved upwardly and terminating at the upper plane of said base in an undercut, a cover plate having its periphery interlocked with said undercut and formed with a central concave seat that is provided with an opening and is depressed within the 1101- low part of the base, a pintle having a rounded protuberance which islargerthan said openin and seats on said depressed portion of the plate, a reduced extension at the lower end of the pintle immediately beyond said protuberance and which extends through said opening in spaced relation to rounded at its ex- 7 tremity and contacts with the floor of the tween sai base, and a headed portion on said reduced extension below the plate and spaced therefrom and larger than said opening, whereby rockin connections are estabhshed bepmtle and said plate and base.

6. In a sliding shoe for furniture, a flat bottomed hollow base, a cover plate secured and extending thereover, said-cover plate having a central opening, a pintle extending through said opening in spaced relation to the walls thereof and having a rounded protuberance which seats on the top face of the cover plate so as to roll thereon a shoulder on the pintle spaced below the plate, and a washer on the pintle abutting the shoulder, the lower terminal of the pintle being upset so as to hold the washer against the shoulder.
