Feb. 20, 1951 Y e. M. BINER CIGARETTE ROLLING DEVICE Filed March 15, 1945 INVENTOR. George M Bi new Patented F eb. 20, 1951 CIGARETTE ROLLING DEVICE George M. Biner, Los Angeles, Calif., assignor of one-half to Raymond M. Bailey, Whittier, Calif.
Application March 13, 1945, Serial No. 582,538
3 Claims. (01. 131-51) This invention relates to cigarette making devices and has for its primary object to provide a simple, inexpensive and easily operable device for the making of cigarettes in the home and without prior experience.
Another object of the invention is to provide means facilitating the rolling of cigarettes in a sure and competent manner.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel method for rolling a cigarette without previous experience.
My invention also has for it objects to provide such means that are positive in operation, convenient in use, economical to manufacture, relatively simple, and of general superiority and serviceability.
The invention also comprises novel details of construction and novel combinations and arrangements of parts, which will more fully appear in the course of the following description. However, the drawings merely show and the following description merely describes one embodiment of the present invention, which is given by way of illustration or example only.
In the drawings, like reference characters designate similar parts in the several views.
- Fig. 1 is a plan view of a cigarette making device incorporating the invention.
Fig. 2 is a side view thereof. Fig. 3 is a sectional view as taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1', and shown in initial operating condition.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional view, showing an intermediate stage of the cigarette rolling operation.
- Fig. 5 is a similar view, showing the final stage of the operation.
In that form of the invention which is illustrated in the drawing, the cigarette rollin device comprises, essentially, a plate member ID serving as a support and affording means alon which a cigarette may be rolled, and a flexible, pliable or substantially pliable band or web I I.
As herein contemplated, the plate member may comprise a platform 15, preferably provided with arolled edge bead l6 at-one end thereof and a rolled edge bead I! on each lateral edge thereof. In addition to affording a smooth finish to these edges, the platform I5 is strengthened, thereby enabling forming the plate member ill of relatively thin and light material, such as aluminum and the like.
The end of the plate member opposite the edge 16 may be upwardly folded to provide a wall It! substantially normal to the platform l5 and then 2 doubled back to provide a wall I9 extending be low the platform l5 to provide both a support leg for one end of the platform and a surface upon which one end 20 of the web H may be afiixed. The other end 2! of said web may be trained about the edge l6, doubled back under the plat form l5 and secured thereto. Various means may be employed for securin the web ends 20 and 2 l',
"and such means may comprise adhesive, adhesive means, or rivets, tacks or the like.
The web ll may be made of a suitable material capable of being sharply rolled without deleterious effect. Such a material may be some of the vellum types of paper, skived leather, fabric, cellulose sheet, etc. The width of the web may approximate the length of a cigarette and said web may have a length between its fixed ends somewhat longer than the length of the platform I5, such excess length or slack of the web affording a bight or loop therein 22 for a small cylindrical body, as later apparent.
The plate member i0 is also preferably provided with lateral walls 25 arranged in flanking relation to the lateral edges of the web. Each Wall 25 is preferably provided with a seat 26 for resting engagement of an object such as a pencil P, and with downwardly sloping edges 27 extending from said seat 26 to the platform l5 said edges actin as part of the means for guidin the movement of the object whereby the tobacco is rolled into a cigarette.
It will be noted that the plate member I0 is integrally formed, all of the various folds and Wa11s being folded from a single sheet in a manner to provide the light, rigid structure herein contemplated. Also, the platform is supported at an angle between edge I 6 and wall I!) to provide more clearance, with respect to a support for the device, for manipulation of object P.
In operation, a preferably round object P is inserted into the bight 22 provided in the web H, and a re-entrant bight 22 formed in the web, as best seen in Fig. 3, by placing the object P against the seats 26 of the walls 25 and holding the same there. A pocket or trough is thus formed, being defined by the web comprisin the bight 22 and the lateral walls 25. Into this pocket there is placed a suitable quantity of tobacco T which is spreaded uniformly therein. A cigarette paper S may then be placed upon the portion of the web which is resting upon the platform l5 with one edge thereof adjacent to the tobacco T. If desired, at this time the other edge C of the cigarette paper may be moistened.
The object P is then moved down in continuous.
contact with the sloping edges 21, as shown in Fig. 4, the object P sliding in the web bight 22 as said object engages successive portions of the web. This causes the bight or trough 22 to roll the tobacco T therein along successive portions of the web, said web unrolling from the bight 22 and rolling into the bight 22*. As the motion of the object P progresses, the adjacent end of the cigarette. paper 5 is rolled around the tobacco IQ; and the bight 22 becomes more sharply curved until the object leaves the edges 21 and slides along the fiat part of the web I I. The motion of the object continues until the entire cigarette paper is rolled around the tobacco in the bight 22 the present device being made. of' ufficient length to insure, perhaps, at'least two complete revolutions of the rolled cigarette before dropping,
OK the end It of the device. Because of the moistened edge 0, the cigarette thus rolled will retain its form as can be understood. If desired, h moistemng of th Qi arettepa er m y be) ac,- complished after the. cigarette completely formed, it in ra ped a i lea es tbe lskt 1 2 and moistened in the usual manner,
The; device herein may be rested upon a table w en in u or ay be heldin ne hand asthe other moves. the object B along the platformin cigarette rolling motion. It is apparent. that in ashort time many cigarettesmast be 20111.86: without previous experience.
Itis to be. understood that thesides i-k be bent upwardly, if it is desired to. tomtthe Gi flrettes more. loosely, so,- that they will draw; more easily. Moreover, if it is, desired to make cisarettes ofsmallerdiameter, asmall cylindrical Object that is at least as. lon as the web M is wide, may be inserted where. indicated by. the circle. 33; This Will reducethe effective len th. of the. web. Difierent diameters oi-obiect 33; will vary the diameter of the cigarettes,
While I have illustrated andg-deScribed-what I new regard as the preferred embodimentzoiimy 'inyention, the construction, is, of coursesubiect t9, modifications withoutdepart ngifrom the spirit and, scope of my invention. L-thereiore, do.- not wish to restrict myself to the particular term of construction illustrated and describedtbut. desire 'm-avail: myself of all: modification hat, manfa l within thescope of th appended; claims;
Having thus, described my invention, whatl claim and desire to secure by, Letters Patent is;
