Description

(No Model.) J. FOX.
WASHING MACHINE.
No. 254,206. Patented Feb. 28,1882.
' UNITED STATES ,JOHN EoX, OF OSKALOOSA, IOWA.
PATENT OFFICE.
WASHING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 254,206, dated February 28, 1882, Application filed December 15, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN FOX, of ()skaloosa, in the county of Mahaska and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful I mprove- 5, ments in Washing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following isa full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, which will enable others skilled in the-art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification.
The drawing represents a verticalsectional view of my improved washing-machine.
This invention relates to washing-machines; and it consists in certain improvements in the.
construction of the same, which will be hereinafterfullydeseribed, and particularlypointed out in the claim.
In the drawing hereto annexed, A represents the tub or suds-box of myimproved washingmachine. Bis the lid or cover of the same,
which supports the gearing by which the oscillatin g beater-frame is operated. The construction and arrangementofsaid gearing are as fol- 2 lows:
G is a base-plate, which may be secured upon the cover B by means of bolts, or in any suitable manner. Plate 0 is provided with'an upright or bracket, D, located near one end 0 of said plate, which is provided near its other end with two transverse ribs, E E, between which another upright or bracket, F, may be secured in any suitable manner. The brackets D and F are provided at their upper ends 5 with bearings for a horizontal shaft, G. The detachable upright or bracket F is provided with a horizontal or laterally-projecting arm, H, forming the upper bearing for a vertical shaft, I, journaled in aperforation, J, in plate 4.0 G, surrounded by an upward and downward projecting flange or collar, K. An additional bearing for shaft I is formed by a collar-plate,
L, bolted or otherwise secured upon the under side of the lid or cover B. The shaft I car- 5 ries at its upper end a pinion, M, engaging a gear-wheel, N, mounted upon the horizontal shaft G, and provided witha handle, 0, by means of which it may be oscillated or rocked to and fro, thus imparting an oscillating motion to the shaft I and to the beater-frame carried by said shaft, as will ,be presently described. Shaft I has its lower. end reduced in diameter, as shown at P, and at a point just above the reduced portion and just below the collar-plate Litis squared, as clearlyshown at Q. Its lower end is threaded, as at R, to receive a nut, T.
U is a clutch-plate, consisting of a suitablyshaped metallic plate having a centrally-located square opening,V, fitting upon the square portion of shaft I, and surrounded on its upper side by a recess, W, fitting around the unreduced portion of said shaft immediately below the collar-plate L. The ends of plate U have downward-proj ectin g lugs X, fitting in recesses in the upper side of the beater-frame Y, which consists ofasuitably-constructed wooden frame having downward-projecting pegs Z, which, when the machine is operated, serve to beat and agitate the clothes in the suds-box or tub A. Said frame, as shown in the drawing, is adjusted upon the lowerend of shaft I, where it is held in position by nut'T and prevented from turning by the clutch U.
. The operation of my invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawing hereto annexed. The driving-gear and beater-frame are, it will be observed, attached to the cover, so as to be readily. removed with the latter from the tub or suds-box; or the cover may be hinged to said box so as to be easily raised,
. I JOHN FOX.
