0. F. SILOOTT.
BOOK PROTEUTOR.
Patented Feb. 28,1882.
* UNITED. STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OSCAR F. SILOOTT, OF FELIGITY, OHIO.
' BOOK-PROTECTOR.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 254,168, dated February 28, 1882.
I Application filed July 9, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSCAR F. SrLcor'r, of Felicity, Olermont county, Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book- Protectors,of which the followingis a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide means for protecting the corners and sides and edges of large books-such as records, 850.- while being removed from or returned to their case, and also to facilitate the handling of the books on the table or desk.
The principle feature of my invention consists in a system of rollers so connected to the book as to prevent the corners or edges of the book from striking and rubbing against the case or otherbooks with which they are brought into contact'when being handled.
1 am aware that a device has been employed in which a roller is used at the bottom edges of the book; but the use of this device necessitates the cutting away of a portion of the cover to admit the roller; but my invention is very different from such device, as will be seen f1 om the following description and drawings, in which-- Figure 1 is a perspective view of abook with my invention attached, and Figs. 2 and 3 are detached perspective views.
A A are plates, preferably of metal, which are to be attached to the corners or edges of the'book in any suitable manner. In the present instance these plates are shown as being attached to the cover by screws (1 and the clamping-arms a. To lower edge and at the outer side of the plate A is attached a stud, I), on which turns a roller, B, which projects slightly below the lower edge of the book and prevents the bottom of the book from sliding on the shelf or table. The plates A are also provided with studs 0, projectingfrom the outer face of the plate, between which is aroller, O, the purpose of which roller is to prevent the books from rubbing against each other or against partitions in the case in which the books are placed, and also to facilitate moving the book on the table by permitting it to roll instead of slide. These rollers 0 may be made either of some hard substance or of rubber or other elastic substance but the elastic rollers are preferable, inasmuch as they prevent any marring of the desk or table.
Theseprotectors may be secured to the book, as shown in Fig. 1, one plate being attached to the front and one to the back of the cover; or the plate A may be a continuous strip extending from the front edge to the back of the book, and having the rollers B and 0 attached at either end. If desired, another protector may be placed at the top of the book; but it will be obvious that this top-protector would not need the rollers B.
It will beseen that myinvention may readily be attached toany book without in any way injuring the cover, and that when so attached the corners and edges of the book cannot be injured by removing the book from or replacing it in the case, and thus the object of my invention will be accomplished.
Having thus described'my invention, what I claim as new and of my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows:
1. A book-protector consisting of a metal plate to be secured to the corners and edges of the cover, said plate being "provided with rollers 'toprevent the edge of the cover from sliding on the shelf and to prevent each book from rubbing against adjacent books or partitions, substantially as described.
2. A devicefor protecting thecorners, edges, and sides of books, consisting of the plate A, provided with clampingarms a, and the rollers B and 0, said rollers being secured to the outer face of the plate, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
