To all whom it'may concern:

Be it known that I, SILAS'N'WHEELER, a citizen of the United States, residin at Omaha, in the county of Douglas and tate of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Account-Registers; and I do. hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. 1

My invention relates to account keeping, but more particularly to account registers or filing cabinets, and has for an object the production of suitable containers for a plurality of individually removable accountslip holders of novel construction, of. means whereby said containers are removably secured within a suitable fire-proof cabinet formed of hinged sections each adapted to receive one of said containers, of means for bolting said outer inclosing cabinet or safe sections together at both sides thereof, and means for locking said sections together independently of the aforesaid bolting means.

With these and other objects in view the invention will be hereinafter particularly described and then pointed out in the appended claim.

In the accompanying drawings which form part of this application for Letters Patent, 7 and whereon corresponding numerals indicate like parts in the several illustrations Figure 1 is a perspective view ofmy improved account register in closed position.

Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the complete structure in wide open position disclosing the front edges of a double series of indi vidually removable account-slip holders.

Fig. 8 is a front elevation of one container for account-slip holders, the same having been removed bodily from the register cabinet and the account slip holders also having been removed.

Reference being had to the drawings and numerals thereon, 10 indicates a relatively fixed, and 11 a movable cabinet section, convnected by hinges 12, 12, the former of said sections being provided with flanged feet 13 by means of which-it may besecured to an office floor or other support, as shown. These two sections are hinged together vertically at approximately a median line, and upon their meeting faces or edges are configured by depressions 14 and projections 15 respect1vely, adapted to telescope one within the other when the cabinet is closed as in Fig. 1.

The said depressions 14, and mating projections 15, are continuous except at points diametrically opposite in each, where the former is broken by additional depressions or pockets 16, 16; and the latter is provided with projections 17, 17 adapted to interlock with the said pockets 16, 16 when the cabinet sections are closed together. In addition to the retaining bolts 19, 1 9 an ordinary combination lock 21 may be applied to the side of cabinet member 10, the same being arranged and adapted to interlock the two sections 10 and 11 together when desired in the ordinary and well understood manner.

Each of the cabinet sections 10 and 11, be-

vertical partitions 23, upon both sides of which, and upon the inner sides of said containers, are rigidly secured as by spot welding or otherwise, three or more vertical series of runways or guideways 24: arranged horizontally and in oppositely disposed pairs, as best shown by Fig. 3.

Upon each horizontal pair of said runwz ys 24 is mounted an individually removable account-slip holder or tray 25, preferably made of sheet metal having upturned ends or raisededges 26, 27, and similar sides or raised tray edges 28 and 29, as best shown by Fig". 6. These account-slip holders are thus adapted to be reciprocated freely within their respective containers 22, and to be individually removed therefrom as occasion or convenience requires They are each provided with a wire loop or bale 3O pivotally mounted in a roll of metal upon the upper edge of the inner end 26 for purposes which 7 will later appear; and the front end 2'? for each is equipped with a label holder 31, the edges whereof are curled oppositely to receive and retain an indicating card such as 32 and the ends whereof are folded oppositely behind the front end 27 of the removable account-slip holder, as best shown by Figs. 6, 7 and 8.

As will be seen by reference to Fig. 6 of the drawings, and also by l ig. 2, the righthand front corner of each of the accountslip holders, both its bottom and raised edges, is cut away at 33 for the purpose of affording a finger hold as a most effective and convenient means of withdrawing the holder at times and also of avoiding the necessity of any protuberance such as a trayknob or ring upon its face which would otherwise prevent closing the cabinet sections together when both the containers 22 and accol'int-slip holders 25 are in place. A further object and particular advantage of forming the accountslip trays with a cutaway portion83 at their front corners, as shown by Fig. 6 is that of enabling an operator or file clerk to rapidly turn over the unsupported corners of pages or cards contained within trays so constructed, as with the leaves of a book, in search of a file number or other data so located for ready referencc.

This being substantially the construction of my invention its use and operation are quite obvious being very similar to other account registers and systems employing loose leaf account slips alphabetically arranged for convenient reference in a suitable cabinet or container. It may be particularly noted, however, that with my invention any one or more of the slip-holders 25 may be conveniently, removed and replaced by simply introducing a forefinger into the cutoff, and consequently the open right hand corner at This clearance also greatly facilitates handling the slips themselves from time to time, and likewise interposed carbon sheets when uses, all of which protrude slightly from their respective holders 25 at the front right-hand corner so as to be readily accessible for inspection of the individual account-slips when desired without the necessity of removing them wholly from their trays.

It will be noted also that in replacing the account-slip holders 25, the pivotally connected bail 80 has a function to perform. This not only assists in holding account slips within the holder in case of drafts blowing across same, but absolutely prevents the said slips curling up and thus being misplaced as the holders are returned to the containers 22. I

Another great and material advantage of the present structure resides in the ability to bodily remove the containers 22 and their contents from the cabinet sections to a more convenient location for use. That is to say the cabinet when in the form of a heavy fireproof safe, as shown, is relatively fixed in its position but at the same time the containers 22 may be instantly withdrawn and conveyed to a counting room, oflice, or any convenient location, and later returned to he confines of the register proper. ,l la,ving thus described my invention, what l new claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

In an account register the combination with a series of account-slip trays each comprising a bottom having the edges thereof bent upwardly to form retaining walls at its sides and ends, and a cut-away portion angularly *rossing said bottom its adjacent side and end walls at the front corner of the tray whereby its contents may be inspected without removal from the tray.
