4 Claims.
This invention relates to clips for holding pin curls, and is particularly adapted for the holding of pin curls until they are set and dried.
The primary object of this clip is to provide a clip that is easy to apply and that will lie flat on the surface of the head, and so designed as to hold the curl in aflat position while drying and setting.
In other words, when the clip is applied to the curl, it is so designed as to support itself in one position by specially designed holding jaws. The tips of the jaws when closed about the curl lie in a line oppositely disposed from one another in a parallel plane to the curl and the scalp surface, preventing the clip from tilting. This feature is the outstanding feature of our new and improved clip.
These and other incidental objects will be apparent in the drawings, specification and claims.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side view of our new and improved pin curl clip drawn on an enlarged scale, and in closed position.
Figure 2 is a plan view of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an end view of Figures 1 and 2.
Figure 4 is an exploded perspective View of the clip.
Figure 5 illustrates the clip being applied to the pin curl.
Figure 6 illustrates the clip closing on the curl, the curl being shown in cross section.
Figure '7 is a further progression of the closure of the clip.
Figure 8 illustrates how the clip is applied to the curls, either holding one curl or holding two.
Figure 9 is a side view of the clip holding a pair of curls on the surface of the scalp, the said curls being in section and the clip being shown in the actual size.
Figure 10 is an end View of the clip in actual size, holding the curls on the scalp surface.
Referring more specifically to. the drawings:
Our new and improved clip for pin curls consist of a double jawed member I and a single jawed member 2. Member I is bifurcated at 3 forming a pair of jaws 4 spaced apart. A lever portion 5 is adapted to be manipulated by the finger of the operator. This lever portion lies on a parallel plane with the jaws 4 and is connected to the said jaws by the loops 6. A lever portion 1 is formed on the jaw 8 of the member 2 by the loop 9.
The clip. is assembled by inserting the loop 9 between the loops 6 and passing the shaft l0 therethrough and bending its ends as indicated 2 I at H, so that these ends will engage the upper surface of the horizontal lever portions 5 and I of the clip. The shaft I0 is made from a spring material so that when the lever portions are brought together as indicated in Figu'res5, Sand 7, the ends I l of the shaft will resist the tendency to bring the levers together tending to return them to the position illustrated in Figures 1, 2 and 3: or to the closed position of the jaws 4 and 8. We do not wish to be limited to this type of spring, but have found it to be simple in construction and effective in its operation, requiring a minimum of space.
The outstanding feature of our clip is in the design of the clip wherein the jaws 4 and 8 lie on the scalp l2 of the head of the wearer. When these jaws lie parallel to the scalp line they support the clip and prevent it from rolling or tilting, bringing the same close to the surface of the scalp, and holding the pin curl flat on the said scalp.
It can be readly seen in Figures 9 and 10 where the clip is drawn actual size, that a very neat clip is provided lying fiat on the surface of the scalp, preventing the same from hurting the scalp of the wearer while coming in contact with the bed clothing while the curls are setting overnight.
In the operation of our new and improved clip, the thumb and second finger engage the ends [3 of the levers 5 and I while the forefinger presses down on the loops 6 and 9 forming the pivot or hinge of the clip. When the jaws are opened by the operator they sit down over the curl as indicated in Figure 5 and when the operator releases the pressure of the forefinger on the pivot part of the clip, the clip assumes the position as indicated in Figures 6 and 7, and finally coming to complete closure resting on the scalp.
In the operation of the clip it is admirably adapted to hold two of the pin curls as indicated at M in Figures 8 and 9. When two curls are clipped together it further assists in balancing the clip on the head of the wearer.
While specific embodiments of the invention have been shown and described, it is obvious that many modifications thereof are possible. The invention, therefore, is not to be restricted except in so far as is necessitated by the prior art and by the spirit of the appended claims.
What we claim is:
l. A hair clip comprising a pair of tong-like members which are pivotally connected and spring-biased to closed position, each of said tong-like members having a jaw portion at one end and a, handle portion at the opposite end, the
jaw portions of said members being interfitting to cross over each other and with the crossedover end portions being bent to be substantially in a plane when in closed position to lie flat on the wearers head.
2. A clip as defined in claim 1, wherein the handle portions of the tong-like members are at angles relative to the jaw portions to bev substantially parallel with the jaw end portions, whereby the handle portions lie flat in jaw closed position.
3. A clip as defined in claim 2 wherein the pivot connecting said members is formed of spring material and has its ends bent back on opposite sides to bear against and bias said members.
4. A clip comprising a pair of tong-like members each comprising a sheet of material having a flat handle-forming end portion terminating in an acute angle and curving over into a small loop to form a bearing and then extending at substantially a right angle to said handle portion to form a jaw portion, said jaw portion being bent at substantially a right angle with the end portion thereof extending in the opposite direction and substantially parallel with said handle portion,
4 the jaw and loop portions of one of said members being substantially reduced in Width and centrally of its handle portion and the jaw and loop portions of. the other member being bifurcated to straddle the other member with the loop portions axially aligned, and a spring pin extending through said loop portions to form a pivot therefor and having its ends bent over in opposite directions and respectively engaging said handle portions to bias said portions apart to close said jaw portions.
