1 Claim. 1

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in clasps and the primary object of the present invention is to provide a clamp. clothespin or the like composed of a pair of clamping members that are urged into clamping engagement by a spring.

Another important object of the present invention is to provide a member having a pair of spaced parallel ribs thereon over which a garment is placed together with a spring urged member having ajaw that is resiliently forced between the ribs to efiectively grip a garment between the ribs.

A further object of the present invention is to provide a clasp that is extremely strong and reliable in use due to the construction of the variout elements forming the clasp, and which is also intended to be used as a spectacle case clasp.

A still further aim of the present invention is to provide a clasp that is simple and practical in construction, neat and attractive in appearance, small and compact in structure, inexpensive to manufacture, and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.

Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:

Figure l is a perspective view of the present invention;

Figure 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view taken substantially on the plane of section line 2--2 of Figure 1;

Figure 3 is an end view of Figure 1; and

Figure 4 is a perspective view of the spring urged pressure member forming part of the present invention.

Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration, there is disclosed a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the numeral Ill represents an elongated flat strip of metal forming a clamping member and having a transversely disposed hollow rib or channel I2 at one end.

An elongated reinforcing strip I4 is secured against one face of the member It by rivets or the like I6 and includes a transversely disposed hollow rib or channel I8 at one end that is spaced parallel to the rib I2. The ribs I2 and I 8 are curved to provide outer convex surfaces over which a garment is to be placed.

The numeral 20 represents an elongated channel shaped pressure member having a web portion 22 and a pair of

leg portions

24 and 26 that are joined by the web portion 22. A pair of

28 and 30 are integrally formed with the

32 and 34 are integrally formed with and project laterally from the member I intermediate the ends of the member Ill.

32 and 34. A pivot 36 extends through all 2 of the ears and its ends are flattened to retain the members I0 and 20 assembled. A spring 38 embraces the pivot 36 and includes

hook terminals

40 and 42 that bear against the strip I4 and in Figure 2 so that a garment will be clamped against both of the ribs by the jaw 44.

In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.

It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described as preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claim.

Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

A clasp comprising a first clamping member having a hollow inverted U-shaped rib at one end, a reinforcing strip secured to said first member and having a hollow inverted U-shaped rib at one end spaced parallel to the rib at one end of the first member, an elongated channel member including a web portion and a pair of leg portions, a jaw at one end of said channel member integrally formed with said web portion and said leg portions and including a convexed surface contacting said first member between said ribs, a pair of ears on said leg portions, another pair of ears projecting laterally from said first member, a pivot joining all of said ears, and a spring on said pivot and yieldingly urging said jaw between said ribs and toward said first member, the leg portions of said channel member extending transversely across the hollow rib at one end of said strip.
