This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a garment clasp.
The invention has for an object the construction of a garment clasp which is characterized by a pair of body members pivotally connected intermediate of their ends and resiliently urged together and associated with a locking member disposed between the tail ends of said body members and operating in a novel fashion.
A further object of the invention resides in an arrangement whereby the locking member comprises a lever which is pivotally mounted between flanges formed on one of the body members.
Still further the invention also contemplates the provision of an element adjustably mounted on the locking member and adapted to engage one of the jaws for locking the jaws in another position.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a safety snap arrangement for the locking member.
Another object of the invention is the construction of a device as mentioned which is simple and durable and which may be manufactured and sold at a reasonable cost. For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

Fig. 10 is a similar view to Fig. 4 but illustrating a still further modification of the device.
The garment clasp, according to this invention, comprises a pair of body members It and H respectively, pivotally connected intermediate of their ends by a rivet I 2. A resilient means is arranged for urging the jaw members into open position as shown in Fig. 3. A locking member I 4 is mounted on one of said jaw members and is disposed partially between the tail ends of the jaw members and is movable into a position to hold the jaw members closed.
The jaw member i I has flanges H a formed at its sides, and a flange li formed at its front end. The jaw member It has flanges lfl formed at its sides and a flange N formed at its front end. The jaw member In is slightly smaller, than the jaw member H so as to be disposed therein; that is, the side flanges 10 are in intimate contact with the inner faces of the side flanges Il The rivet I2 extends completely across the flanges H and consequently through the flanges 10 A spring I5 is mounted upon the intermediate exposed portion of the rivet l2 and acts between the jaw members to urge the jaw members open.
The locking member l4 comprises an inner U-shaped portion M which has a trunnion M the elements of which pivotally engage the flanges Il The locking member i4 also has an external handle portion which is formed with a slot or other opening l4. The jaw member ID has an overhanging curved tail portion Ill which is adapted to engage against the central bent portion I l when the handle I 4 is in the same plane with the jaw members, and the jaw members necessarily must be closed. If the hanclle i4 is pivoted clockwise (as illustrated in Fig. 4) the portion [4 of the handle will be swung out from contact between the tail portions of the jaw members and the jaw members will be opened up to the positions shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 4, or the full lines in Figs. 3 and 7.
In Figs. 8 and 9 a modified form of the invention has been disclosed in which an arrangement is provided for holding the jaw members closed to one or another condition. More specifically, there is a transverse element i6 which is adjustably mounted on the locking member l4 and which may be moved to an inoperative position, as shown in Fig. 8, or to an operative position as shown in Fig. 9. The member l6 has several projecting rivets I! engaging through slots l8 formed in the locking member l4. These rivets and slots limit the element IE to be shifted along upon the locking member to and from the positions shown in Figs. 8 and 9.
The garment clasp in this form of the invention is very similar to that previously described and the same parts may be recognized by the same reference numerals. The jaw member i0 is formed with a pressed-out portion Ill in the tail end I0 thereof into which the element l6 may be engaged. When the element I6 is in the inoperative position, as shown in Fig. 8, thejaw members will be held closed as shown in Fig. 4. When the element [6 is in the position shown in Fig. 9 the jaw elements are forced closed with the outer ends thereof closer together.
In Fig. 10 a still further modified form of the I invention has been disclosed, in which a safety snap arrangement is provided by forming a transverse bead II on the body member I I, near the opposite end tothe flange H With this arrangement, the free end [4 of the U-shaped portion I4 is permitted to snap past the bead l I, I

1. In a garment clasp, comprising a pair of jaw members pivotally connected intermediate of their ends, a locking member mounted on one of said members and. disposed between the tail ends of said members and movable to a position to hold said jaw members closed, said locking member having an inner U-shaped end with a trunnion the elements of which pivotally engage one of said members, and one of said jaw members having a tail portion curved to conform with and engaging and terminating against the bend of said U-shaped portion when the locking member is in the same plane with the jaw members, said U-shaped portion being adapted to be moved out of position between the tail ends of said members for opening said members.
2. A garment clasp, comprising a pair of jaw members pivotally connected intermediate of their ends, resilient means urging said jaw members open, a locking member mounted on one of said members and disposed between the tail ends of said members and movable to a position to hold said jaw members closed, and an element adjustably mounted on said locking member and adapted to be moved to a position to engage against one of said tail ends. 3. A garment clasp, comprising a pair of jaw members pivotally connected intermediate of their ends, resilient means urging said jaw members open, a locking member mounted on one of said members and disposed between the tail ends of said members and movable to a position to hold said jaw members closed, and an element adjustably mounted on said locking member and adapted to be moved to a position to engage against one of said tail ends, said element being supported by rivets engaging longitudinal slots formed in said locking.
