Pursuant to the invention, the hair clip comprises a plate member with which at one end is integrally connected a tongue member, the opposite end of the-plate member being provided with a catch member forreleasably holding the free end'of'the tongue member. 1 .l

The invention is applicable for a plate member which is provided with a longitudinally extending slot and for a non-slotted corrugated plate member.

The hair clip is worn by the user by applying it to a strand of hair,-the tongue member being inserted underthestrand, the free end of the tongue member being locked bymeans of the catch member.

Pursuant to the slotted plate member embodiment of the invention, the tongue member is provided at its inner face with a convex corrugation, and has a width greater than the width of the slot; upon application of the hair clip to a strand of hair, the strand is therefore brought above the plane of the opposite longitudinal elements of the slotted member by virtue of the stated corrugations of the tongue member, whereby a ridge is formed in the hair.

Pursuant to the non-slotted plate embodiment of the invention, the strand of hair, when the hair clip is in its locked position, is disposed between the concavely formed underface of the plate member and the convexly formed upper face of the tongue member.

In the slotted embodiment and in the nonslotted embodiment the hair which is gripped between the inner faces of the hair clip is offset, thus preventing lateral displacement of the hair clip.

The non-slotted and slotted plate members are each of arcuate configuration of a given radius, conforming generally to the curvature of the human head, and its tongue members also oi. an arcuate configuration but of a greater radius at its central portion and of lesser radii at its opposite ends thus affording an enhanced pressure engagement over an enlarged are between the tongue member and the underface of the nonslotted plate member, the hair of the strand being interposed therebetween, thus affording an assured locking of the hair clip relative to the strand of hair.

Referring to the drawings, and particularly Figs. 1 through 6, the hair clip is designated generally 20. This type of embodiment comprises a slotted plate member 2!, its slot 22 being shown disposed substantially centrally and extending longitudinally of the plate member. The

The tongue member 25, as appear clearly from Fig. 6, is pivotally integrally connected at the end element 21a of the plate member 2 I. At the end element 2!?) of the plate member is provided a catch member 26 of suitable arcuate configuration for readily enabling the free end 25a of the tongue member to resiliently pass the free end of the catch member 26 when the tongue member is moved into its closed position, the curvature of the free end 25a of the tongue member cooperating with the curved formation of the catch member 26 to adjustably resiliently hold the tongue member in its lockedposition. Such adjustment of the locking of the tongue member afiords variant locking positions of the tongue member when the hair clip is applied to variant thicknesses of strands of hair.

Fig. 5 illustrates the function of the tongue member relative to the slotted plate member 2! when the hair clip is applied to a strand of hair, indicated at 21, whereby it is apparent from Fig. 5, and indicated generally in Fig. 1, there is formed a ridge 21a of the air intermediate the

The arcuate configuration of the tongue member 25 comprises a central arcuate portion 25b of a larger radius indicated by the symbol R, and end

bined arcuate formations serve to impart pressure by the tongue member 25 relative to the slotted plate member through the intermediation of the strand of hair 21 when the tongue member is in its closed position, as indicated in Fig. 5.

The embodiment illustrated in Figs. 7 through 10 is designated generally 30, and comprises a corrugated non-slotted plate member 3! similarly provided with a tongue member 32, which is hingedly integrally connected at one end 3Ia of the plate member 3|; at the opposite end of the plate member 3| is provided a catch member 33, formed similarly to the catch member 26 of the aforesaid embodiment.

The plate member 3| has a curvature corresponding generally to that of the human head. The tongue member 32 at its central portion 32a has a curvature of a radius greater than that of the plate member 3|, the

however of a curvature of less radius as compared With that of the central portion 32a.

By such provision of cooperating configurations, upon applying the hair clip 30 to a strand of hair, as is indicated in'Fig. 10, the tongue member 32 when in its locked position, pressure engagement is efiected between the central portion 320. of the tongue member relative to the underface of the non-slotted plate member 3|,

through the intermediation of the interposed strand of hair, thereby insuring maintenance of lockingof the hair clip relative to the strand of hair.

I claim:

A hair curler comprising an elongated plate member having a. catch member connected undersurface of the plate adjacent to the side edges of the slot, in the closed position of the tongue.
