HANDLE FOR BOX SPRINGS AND THE LIKE Filed Oct. 17, 1949 4 32 .1
Patented Jan. 30 1951 HANDLE FOR BOX SPRINGS AND THE LIKE Michael Bechik, St. Paul, Minn., assignor to Bechik Products, Inc., St. Paul, Minn., a corporation of Minnesota Application October 17, 1949, Serial No. 121,730
2 Claims.
1 My invention relates to handles for box springs and the like and has for its primary object the provision of such a device which is inexpensive to produce, which is neat in appearance and durab.e in construction.
A still further object of my invention is the provision of a device of the class described which may be formed of a s ngle length of resilient wire, which may be quickly secured to the wall of a box spring, and which will normally be biased toward a position flush with the side wall of said box spring.
Still more specifically, the object of my invention is to provide a device of the c'ass described formed from a single length of resilient wire to provide a handle-engaging loop, depending generally parallel, closely spaced shank-forming members, and trunnions on the ends of said shank-forming members projecting laterally outwardly therefrom in a common plane therewith and at divergent angles with respect to each other, whereby when each of said trunnionforming members are secured to the base frame of a box spring for pivotal movements about a constant axis, said bands will be biased in the direction of the side wall.
Other highly important objects and advantages will become apparent from the following detailed specification, appended claims and attached drawings.
Referring to the drawings in which like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views:
Fig. l is a fragmentary view in side elevation of a box spring having my novel handle attached thereto;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary end elevation with some parts broken away and some parts shown in section of the box spring and .handle of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary View partly in elevation and partly in section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. l, the box spring being removed and some parts shown in a different position;
Fig. 4 is a view corresponding to Fig. l but showing a modified form of handle construction;
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary view in end elevation of a box spring having the handle of Fig. 4; and
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary bottom plan of the box spring and handle of Fig. 4.
Referring more specifically to the preferred embodiment of the invention illustrated in Figs. 1 to 3, inclusive, the numeral l indicates in its entirety a conventional box spring, a side wall 2, and an end wall 3, shown as being covered with a cloth or 'like fabric cover 4. The spring further 2 includes relatively light padding '5' extending about the side walls thereof and a conventional frame member iipreferably made'from wood or the like, and extending about the bottom portion of the box spring I.
Preferably, and as shown, my novel 'box spring handle comprises a single length of resilient wire formed to provide a "looped handle member 1, a pair of intermediate resilient shank-forming members 8, and trunnion forming members 9. The shank members 8' depend from the handle I and the trunnions 9" extend laterally outwardly, one each from one of the depending shank members B in a common plane with the handle 1 but at diverging angles with respect to each other, whereby the handleT, shanks Band trunnions 9 are normally adaptedto'lie flush against the side wall 2 and in a plane parallel to the plane of the side wall 2. It will be seen, by reference to Fig. 1, that the trunnions 9 extend outwardly of the shank members 8 at oblique angles thereto, and are contained one each in one of a pair of sockets Ill integrally formed with a bracket l I rigidly secured to the side wall 2 adjacent the lower edge thereof by screws or the like I2 threaded into the frame member 6. The trunnions 9 fit snugly in the sockets ID for partial rotation with respect thereto, said rotation being limited by a stop member I 3 integrally formed with the bracket H and extending between the sockets ill, see particularly Figs. 1 and 3.
The resilience of the shank members 8 and trunnions it! permits a relatively small amount of outward swinging of the handle I from its normal position against the wall 2, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2. The angle of divergence between the trunnions 9 under such outward swinging movement tends to change but is largely prevented by the confinement of the trunnions within the sockets H) which secure the trunnions for rotation each on a constant axis, so that a yielding bias is' created thereby toward the box spring wall 2. Thus, when the handle i is released, it will move to its full line position of Fig. 2, flush against the wall 2. The stop member l3 positively limits outward swinging movements of the handle I and shank 8 to prevent the handle from being swung outwardly beyond the point where the material will be permanently distorted. Under normal conditions, the handle "I is moved outwardly from the wall 2 just sufiicient to permit insertion therebetween and the wall 2 of the fingers of a user, and the stop member l3 I handlingj In the modified form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 4 to 6, inclusive, parts identical to those of Figs. 1 to 3, inclusive, are designated with identical numerals having prime marks added. The modified form of handle illustrated in Figs. 4 to 6, inclusive, comprises a hand-engaging element I4 having depending shankforming members l5 which are bent at right angles to provide laterally projecting shank portions l6 which terminate in laterally outwardly projecting trunnions l '1. It will be noted that the shank portions [6 and trunnions I! lie closely adjacent the bottom l8 of the box spring I, the shank portions I 6 and trunnions ll being normally in a common plane parallel to the plane of the bottom 18. The trunnions I1 are disposed at diverging angles with respect to each other and are each snugly contained in sockets I9 integrally formed with a bracket 20 which is securely fastened to the bottom of the frame member 6' by screws or the like 2|. The modified handle of Figs. 4 to 6, inclusive, like the preferred form thereof, is made from a single length of resilient wire and the sockets I 9 maintain the trunnions I 1 each on a constant axis, whereby the handle Ill and shank portions l5 and I6 are biased toward their normal position flush against the side wall 2" and bottom 18, respectively.
My invention has been thoroughly tested and found to be fully adequate for the accomplishment of the objectives set forth; and while I have shown a commercial embodiment and a single modification thereof, it will be understood that the same is capable of further modification without departure from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the claims.
What I claim is:
1. In a device of the class described, a handle formed from a single length of resilient wire to provide a looped hand-engaging portion, a pair of depending closely spaced generally parallel shank members, and a pair of trunnion members projecting laterally outwardly one each from one of said shank-forming members in a common plane with said shank-forming members and at divergent angles with respect to each other, and bracket means for securing said trunnions to the wall of a box spring in a position wherein said trunnions and an immediately adjacent portion of said shank-forming members are flush therewith, said bracket means including an anchoring plate formed to provide elongated spaced diverging sockets adapted to snug- 1y pivotally receive therein one each of said trunnions, outward pivotal movement of the handle from its normal position imparting a torque twist to said shank members, thereby storing up energy tending to return said shank members and handle to said normal position.
2. The structure defined in claim 1, in further combination with stop means integrally formed with said bracket means for limiting outward movement of said shank-forming members with respect to the adjacent wall of said box spring.
