4 Claims. (01. -329) This invention relates to a guard or shield of novel construction the primary object of which is to enable one to position and retain the guard on a bed between the pillows.

A further object of this invention is to provide a bed dividing guard or shield including means whereby the shield can be easily rotated to position and retain the same between the spring and mattress and the headboard when not in use.

A further object of this invention is to provide a novel support for a bed dividing shield which may be fabricated entirely of a wire, so that the entire device is cheap to manufacture, easy to operate, and easy to assemble upon the bed.

A further object of this invention is to provide in a bed having a spring and mattress thereon;

a bed dividing guard comprising a support extending between the spring and mattress, a vertically extending rod rotatably secured to said support, a shield, and means for retaining said shield on the upper end of said rod.

These, together with various ancillary objects and features of the invention which will later become apparent as the following description proceeds, are attained by the divice, a preferred embodiment of which has been illustrated by way of example only in the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device shown attached to a bed;

Figure 2 is a perspective view of the device with the shield removed; and

Figure 3 is a sectional view, taken substantially on the plane of section line 33 of Figure 1.

Specific reference is now made to the drawings. In the several views in the accompanying drawings and in the following specification similar reference characters indicate corresponding elements throughout.

Indicated generally at I0 is a bed having a mattress l2 supported upon a spring, box or otherwise Hl. The device of the instant invention is indicated generally at l6 and consists of a length of wire twisted intermediate its ends as at [8 to form a loop 20 which is positioned between the mattress l2 and spring l4. The free ends of the wire are bent upwardly as at 22 and are provided with loops 24 at their ends embracing a vertically extending rod 26. Thus it will be seen that the rod 26 is rotatably supported upon the loop or support 26. It will also be understood that the loop 20 extends between the mattress and the spring at the head portion (not shown) of the bed so that the rod 26 is positioned between the bed and the spring and the head portion.

Carried at the upper end of the rod 26 is a means for retaining a guard or shield 28 preferably fabricated of a lightweight plastic material. The retaining means consists of a first loop member 30 spaced from a second loop member 32 joined together by a web 34 which embraces the rod 26 and serves to resiliently urge the

loop members

30 and 32 together into gripping engagement with the shield 28. To additionally secure the sides of the shield on the

loop members

30 and 32, the latter is provided with an inwardly bent pin or lug 36 which extends through a suitable aperture in the shield 28. It will also be understood that the first loop member 30 is formed as a continuous extension from the upper end of the rod 26 as shown clearly in the drawings.

In use, the loop or support 2|! is positioned between the spring and the mattress at the head of the bed and the shield 28 is raised and rotated so that it rests between a pair of pillows (not shown) on the bed. 7 It will be understood at this point that the shield will not be of such length as to extend across the entire bed inasmuch as it is being employed as a shield for the head and shoulder portions of the occcupants only. When it is desired to move the shield from the bed, the shield 28, the associated

30 and 32, and the rod 26 are rotated 50 that the shield clears the spring and mattress. Inasmuch as the pin 36 is loosely engaged in the aperture of the shield 28, the shield will drop at the sides of the spring and mattress and adjacent the head portion of the bed to assume the position shown in dotted lines in Figure 1.

In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.

It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claims.

Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

1. In a bed having a spring and mattress thereon; a bed dividing guard comprising a support extending between the spring and mattress, a vertically extending rod rotatably secured to said support, a shield,and means for retaining said shield on the upper end of said rod, said support including a wire loop having free end portions 3 bent to form eyes for rotatably receiving said rod intermediate its ends.

2. In a bed having a spring and mattress there on; a bed dividing guard comprising a support extending between the spring and mattress, a vertically extending rod rotatably secured to said support, a shield, and means for retaining said shield on the upper end of saidrod, said shield retaining means including a pair of spaced loop members, means connecting said loop members and embracing said rod for urging said loop members into gripping engagement with the sides of said shield.

3. The combination of claim 2 and a pin carried laterally by one of said loop members and extending through said shield.

4 4. The combination of claim 3 wherein said support includes a wire loop having free end portions bent to form eyes for rotatably receiving said rod intermediate its ends.
