Application March 23, 1949, Serial No. 82,998
,Thls invention relates to draperysupportlng devices and the like and has special reference toa window valance combination such as is used for producing an artistic effect at the top .of window drapery, shades,: blindsandthe like.
In the construction of such valances for houses already constructed and not provided with built-in valances at thewindows, it is necessary for a carpenter to measure the various windows at which valanoes are to be used and separately construct each valance and thennail or screw each onein place. One important bject ofthe present invention is to provide a novel valance combination .with provision for adjustment in length to fit the window at which it is to be used. V Valance structures frequently have a front or race board carved orotherwise ornamented, and the ornamented; feature frequently is of..such character as to require centering in the .window width for proper appearance v Another object. of the invention is to provide a novel combination of extensible valance wherein provision is made for permitting centering of theface board no matter to what length the valance. may be adjusted. This combination ls shown ascomprising aface board andend supportingbrackets within which, there is provision for the ,endwise shifting of the face, board to center the ornamental design.
,In changingthe drapery used in winter to that used in summer it sometimes occurs that light draperies of the summer type do notblend artistically with the valance which does present anartistic appearance with the heavier winter draperies. 1
A further object of the. invention is to provide a novel form of extensible valance which may be taken down without the necessity of removlng screws or nails and which may as readily be replaced orexchanged for another valance combination suitable in a change of window draperies.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in general of certain novel details, of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and particularly claimed.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is an inside face view of a window showing the improved valance applied thereto."
Fig. 2 is an enlarged.elevationy'partly in'secition, showing the face board and certain-"end brackets as constructed in aceordahce with this invention.
7 Claims (-01; rec- 21) of-the respective plate Ill.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the arrangement shown in Fig. 2.
'Fig. 4 is astill more enlarged view showing, in
perspective, one of the brackets as used in Fig.12. Fig. 5 is a perspective view similar to Fig. 4
but showing a modified form of bracket.
Fig. 6 is a plan view showin the manner in ,which the invention may be used for triple windows;
Fig. 7 is a plan view showing the use of the invention for bay windows.
In each form of the invention as here shown there is provided a pair of complementary brackets 9, one being for the right hand side of a' window, and the other for the left hand side of the window. These brackets may be made of metal, plastic, or other material. jzEach of the brackets 9 includes an angular end plate l0 having vertical front and back edges. .A front plate ll extends from the front edge of each plate at right angles thereto, one plate H extendingto the right and the other to the left A rearwardly projecting flange 12 extends from the lower edge ofjeach plate H at right angles to the plate. The flange I2 is of uniform width throughout and a back plate I3 extends. upwardly and is inclined inwardly from the rear edge of the flange l2. Theback plate l3 has its upper edge curved backwardly as at M. rrIn the form of the invention shown in Figs. 1' to 4, inclusive, each plate H) is provided adja' cent itsrear edge with vertically spaced inverted key-hole slots l5.
;In the form of the invention shown in Figs. 5,6, and? a flange 16 extends inwardly from the rear; edge of the plate 10 and in this flange there are provided vertically spaced inverted key-hole s ot In connection with the plates 1- there are provided supports 18 which extend inwardly at right angles to plates l0 and are preierably semi-circular in cross-section with their concaved'side facing inwardly so that drapery rodsv ,fl'fhe flanges l 2 sustain the weight of the valancev boards {9 which are supplied in lengths substantially'shorter (e. g. one inch) than the width of the window, to. be equipped with this novel com bina'tion an brackets 9 and ornamental valance- 3. boards l9. This board 19 is supplied of such thickness as to be gripped frictionally between the back plates 13 and front plates H, the back plates thus acting as clamping springs for the end portions of the boards 19 which, as above stated, are supplied in lengths somewhat shorter than the widths of standard windows. This permits stores to stock this valance combination equipment, consisting of the end brackets and scrolled boards, for home application to windows of approximately the same widths and the purchaser will be able to center the valance board correctly within the faces ll, 12', and 13 of the brackets, due to the length of the supporting surfaces l2 relative to the length of the valance board. As here shown, the ornamental feature of the valance board l9 includes a scrolled. lower edge 20. It will be obvious from the drawing that the center of the scroll can be adjusted endwise between the brackets when they are in place on the window frame by a simple sliding movement.
In erecting the device, screws S having shanks of such diameter that they may pass into the smaller ends of the keyhole slots but having heads which will not pass through the smaller ends" but will pass through the larger ends of the slots, are chosen. These screws are screwed into the ends or face of the lintel L according to the form of bracket used and are spaced to suit the spacing of the key-hole slots. The brackets are then positioned so that the screw heads will pass through the slots and the brackets are then d'ra-wn downwardly which holds them removably in: place. The valance board is then applied and adjusted as above described.
It is to be noted that the brackets each has a pocket open at the top and one side as formed by the front plate H with its bottom flange 12 and back plate I3.
What is. claimed is:
