GARMENT HANGER Filed Oct. 16, 1947 Patented Jan. 2, 1951 GARMENT HANGER John G. Kosky and Emanuel Krantz, Clayton, Mo.
Application October 16, 1947, Serial No. 780,158
2 Claims.
This invention relates to garment hangers, and more particularly to a hanger for displaying ladies dresses and other garments hung thereon.
In the display of ladies dresses and other garments, particularly by merchants, the garments are now hung on ordinary garment hangers having only shoulder members and a hook for han ing the hanger on the rod of a display rack. By the use of such hangers, the dresses, or other garments merely hang therefrom in a flat form which does not display, to the best possible advantage, the garment in the same way as displayed on a mannequin, or a person, and, it is, therefore, on object of the instant invention to provide a hanger that will overcome the present objectionable features of displaying ladies garments on ordinary, or conventional types of garment hangers.
The primary object of our invention is the provision of a garment hanger which can be used to prominently display the bust portion of a ladys dress, or other garment hung from the hanger so as to display the garment to an observer, or prospective purchaser substantially the same as it would appear if worn by a person, and
the hanger is designed primarily for display pursion of a garment hanger having a member supported by the shoulder members of the hanger so that when a garment is hung on the hanger, the hanger will have a neck surface portion exposed to provide a neck background effect for the garment displayed.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a garment hanger having parts, or portions thereof so arranged that a ladys garment, when hung on the hanger, will have the same display appearance, as to bust and waist line efl'ect, as when worn by a person.
With the above mentioned objects and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and set forth in the claims hereto appended, it bein understood that mere changes in the form, size, proportion, and minor details of construction within the scope of the claims may be 2 resorted to without departing from the spirit of or without sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a garment display hanger embodying the features of our invention, and showing the bust member thereof in its raised and inoperative position.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the hanger, showing the bust member in its lower, or operative position.
Fig. 3 is a detail, in end elevation, showing one embodiment of the bust member hinge connection with the hanger frame.
Fig. 4 is a front elevation of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a view showing a modified form of bust member, and showing a detachable connection with the hanger frame.
, In carrying out the invention, we provide a suitable hanger frame structure designated, generally as I.
The frame structure I is illustrated, in one embodiment of the invention, as formed from a single length, or strand of suitable wire, or equivalent material, having suitably joined sides, shoulders, and lower end members, designated 2, 3 and 4, respectively.
The ends of the wire, or equivalent material forming the hanger frame structure, are suitably secured together, as at 5, as by welding, or in any suitable equivalent manner, such, for instance, as by twisting the ends of the wire around each other in the conventional'manner. One end of the wire designated a is longer'than the other end thereof designated 1, and the longer end continues to form a hook 8 by means of which the hanger can be suspended, or hung from a suitable rod 9 such, for instance as the hanger supporting rod forming a part of the usual, or conventional ladys dress, or garment display racks.
The side members 2 of the hanger frame structure of the invention illustrated, are shown as converging downwardl a suitable distance from the outer ends of the shoulder members 3 and then diverging downwardly a suitable distance joining with the outer ends of the lower frame member 4.
The junctures of the converging side members 2 of the hanger frame serve to provide a waist line section designated II], which section of the hanger frame is narrow in width with relation to the width of the upper, or shoulder section formed by the shoulder members 2 and the lower end member 4 of the hanger frame. In other words, the hanger frame side members 2 are suitably deformed, or bowed inwardly toward each other to form the waist line section I at a suitable distance below the shoulder members 3.
A suitable bust member is carried by and between the side members 2 asuitable distance below the shoulder members 3 and in one embodiment of the invention, the bust member consists of a suitable wire, or equivalent member H provided intermediate its ends with a pair of spaced and suitably shaped bust sections 12 which are formed by bowing, or de' forming the member II in the same general direetion. In the embodiment shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the ends of the bust member II are fashioned to provide hooked ends having the pintle portions l3 which are hingedly connected with suitable ears M carried by the side frame membersso that the bust member may be swung from an operative position when displaying a dress, or other garment, andinto an upright, neutral, or inoperative position when the dress is not on display.
The section I of either hooked end of the bust member H, adjacent the outer end of each pintle 3, is fashioned to engage its respective frame side member 2 to limit downward swinging movement of the bust member when swung downwardly from an approximately vertical, or neutral position when a garment is not on display to an operative position when the garment is being displayed.
In the modification shown in Fig. 5, we have illustrated a bust member formed from a sheet metal, or equivalent member H having the bust sections l2 and having the ends thereof to form pins l3 for detachable connection with suitable ears 14 carried by the side members 2 of the hanger frame.
A suitable mannequin like neck member It made from plastic, or equivalent material may be suitably supported by the shoulder members 3. When so employed, itserves to conceal the shoulder members 3 from view to give the same neck effect when. a ladys garment is displayed upon the hanger frame, as when the garment isworn by a; person.- The bust sections, l2 and 12" it will be apparent, fill out the dress, or other garment at the bust line the same as if actual 1y worn by a person, thus a prospective purchaser of a garment can see. to the best advantage how the garment will look when worn by a person. I V From the foregoing description taken in eerineetion with the drawings, it will be apparent 4 that we disclose a garment hanger that can be used to display a dress, or other garment to the best advantage as to the bust line, and/or the bust line, waist line if a belt is a part of the garment, and the neck lines thereof when displaying the garment to a prospective purchaser.
The many advantages of the herein described invention will readily suggest themselves to those skilled in the art to which it appertains.
What we claim is:
1. In a ladys garment display hanger, a wire frame structure having joined side, shoulder and lower end members, a hook formed by the inner ends of the shoulder members, and a freely swingable bust member pivotally mounted at its ends to the side members of the frame structure and the ends of the bust member having means to limit downward swinging movementof the bust member by contacting the side members of the frame.
2. In a ladysgarment display hanger, a garmerit form frame'formed from a single strand of wire having joined sides, shoulders and lower end members and having the ends of the wire secured together, one end of the wire being longer and continuing to form a hanger hook, the side members being deformed inwardly to provide a waist line section for the frame, a transverse bust member pivotally mounted at its ends to the side members intermediate the bust line section and the outer ends of the shoulder members, ears carried by the side members of the hanger frame, inwardly projecting members at the ends of the bust member for hinged connection with the ears, and end portions of the bust member joining the inwardly,
projecting members arranged to contact the side members of the frame below the earsto limit downward movement of the bust member when displaying a dress to project the bust portion of the dress and allow the bust member to be raised to: a neutral position when the, dress is not being displayed.
