" UNITED STATES PATENT OFFicE.
PIOTR. K. DE MUR, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNORTO VAN HOUTEN, SAYRE & 00., OF NEWARK, NEW'JERSEY.
EAR-WIRE LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 253,472, dated February '7, 1882 Application filed August 3, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PIOTR. K. DE MUR, a resident of New York city, in the county of New York and State of NewYork, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Ear-Wire Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it, appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of this inven tion is to give greater security to the ear-ring upon the ear of the wearer, obviating any danger of the said ring coming oil or out of the ear and being lost, in which case, should precious stones-such as diamonds-be secured in said ring, great loss would be occasioned.
The invention consists in the arrangement and combination of parts, substantially as will be herein set forth, shown, and finally embodied in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts in each of the several figures, Figures 1 and 2 are elevations, respectively, of my de-- vice, illustrating the manner of opening and closing the ear-wire. The remaining figures are enlarged to more clearly indicate the parts, Figs. 3 and 4 being sectional views, showing a slot in a revolving lock in and out of engagement with an opening in a ring held or carried by the. ear-ring. Figs. 5 and 6 are views-an elevation and sectional-of the re-' volving lock, showing the peripheral groove and the slot. Fig. 7 is a plan showing an earwire lying in the slot in the revolving lock before said revolving lock has been turned to hold the same therein; and Fig. 8 is a front elevation of the device with the said revolving lock removed from the ring, showing more clearly the relation of said ring with said earring.
' In carrying out my invention I construct the curved wire a in substantially the manner shown, having upon one end a locking derstood. 5 5
The locking device is composed of a ring, a, secured upon the wire a, and having an opening therein at a point approximately opposite to said point of union with said wire a, and a revolving lock, d, having a peripheral groove, g, which carries said ring 0, and a slot, h, lying at right angles with the before mentioned groove g, and adapted to receive the ear-wire b when said slot coincides with the opening in said ring. After the hinged ear-wire bis brought into the slot h the revolving lock is turned, as illustrated in Fig. 4, which holds said wire securely, preventing the same from becomingdisengaged upon the ear and the earring being lost.
Upon each side of the groove 9 are or may be placed knurls m, to facilitate the operation of revolving the lock, though said lock may be otherwise roughened to produce the same result. 5
At appropriate points upon the look 01 and ring 0 are secured stop-balls y, which operate to limit the action of the revolving look, so that when the opening in the ring 0 and the slot in the lock coincide the said lock will be prevented from further action in the direction traversed, but can only be returned, as will be well understood.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, 8 1s 1. The combination, in an ear-ring, of a revolving lock, d, with a ring secured to said ear-ring, having an opening therein, said parts being arranged to operate substantially as and for the purposes set forth and shown.
2. In an ear-ring, a locking device adapted to receive and hold the ear-wire, composed of a ring, 0, having an opening therein, and a revolving piece, 01, having a notch therein 5 adapted to coincide with said opening, substantially as and for the purposes set forth'and In testimony that I claim the foregoing I shown. have hereunto set my hand this 13th day of 3. In an ear-ring, a revolving piece, d, hav- July, 1881. ing an annular groove therein,w0rking within PIOTR. K. DE MUR. 5 a ring, 0, secured upon a wire, a, and adapted Witnesses:
to receive the ear-wire, substantially as and J OHN B. VAN HOUTEN,
for the purposes set forth and shown. ALFRED LEBLANC.
