UNirEn STATES PATENT OEEicE.
WILLIAM J. FITZGERALD, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO HOBERTB. IVES, OF SAME PLACE.
CIGAR-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 252,753, dated January 24, 1882.
Application filcd Jnly 22, 188i. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. FITZGER- ALD, a citizen of the United States ofAmerica, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar or Cigarette Holders; andl do hereby declare the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which itappertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is perspective view of my improved cigar and cigarette holder, and Fig. 2 is a view in elevation thereof with the moveinentof the jaws indicated in dotted lines.
This invention has relation to improvements in devices adapted to hold cigars and cigarettes, and is characteristic for the facility with which it can be adjusted to and removed from the cigarette or cigar and the security of its grasp thereon; and itconsists ofparallel spring-platesprovided at one end with jaws adapted to clasp a cigar and at the other end with jaws to clasp a cigarette, while between the uniting points or points of contact they are provided with compressible springs, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In carrying out my invention I employ, as will be clearly seen by reference to the accompanying drawings, two spring-metal plates, A A, arranged parallel and having two uniting points, as at a a, one near each jaw, presently described. The plates are capable of a springing motion upon the uniting-rivets a, as will be more fully seen hereinafter.
Atoneof the ends ofeachof the platesA there is provided a segmentaljaw, B,whichja we meet at their outer ends, and are adapted to receive and clasp a cigar, while the other ends of the plates are provided with similar but smaller jaws, B B, to enable them to receive and clasp a cigarette. Between their uniting points or rivets a the plates are each provided with a semi-elliptical or outwardly-curved portion, C, the action of which, it will be seen, when compressed is to cause the outer meeting ends of the jaws to separate, and thus permit of the insertion of the cigarette or cigar, or the slipping ot' the jaws upon the cigar or cigarette sufiiciently far as that, when pressure is removed from the spring C, the jaws will clasp and secure the inserted cigar or cigarette. The operation for removing the cigar or cigarette is obviously by again compressing the springs, which will permit it to fall out.
From the foregoing it will be readily understood how this device serves to enable the holding of the cigarette 0r cigar while smoking.
Having thus fully described my invention,
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The'cigar or cigarette holder consisting of the parallel spring-plates A, having each a curved meeting jaw, B, and provided with a compressible spring, C C, between their uniting rivets or points a, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I at'fix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM J. FITZGERALD.
