2 claims. (ci. 15o- 1.5)
' This invention relates to `improvements in covers for golf club heads.
An object of my invention is to provide a novel cover for wooden golf club heads which is capable of being readily applied in a protective position over a golf club head, and which when so applied fully protects the finish and thread wrappings on said head against damaging scratches, cuts and other defacing marks from other clubs carried in a golf bag.
Another object of my invention is to provide an improved protective cover for Wooden golf club heads, having novel means for maintaining the cover in a secure position on a golf club head.
Other and further objects of my invention will be pointed out hereinafter, or will be indicated in the appended claims, or will be obvious to one skilled in the art upon an understanding of the present disclosure. For the purpose of this application, I have elected to show herein certain forms and details of a cover for a golf club head representative of my invention; it is to be understood, however, that the embodiment of my invention herein shown and described is for purpose of illustration only, and that therefore it is not to be regarded as exhaustive of the variations of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a cover for a wooden golf club head embodying the principles of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the cover, showing it applied to a golf club head;
Fig. 3 is a side elevation, on a reduced scale, of the cover; and
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings the numeral l designates a golf club head, preferably of the wooden type, having a tapered neck portion and shaft 2 secured thereto in the usual manner.
The cover for the golf club head comprises an elongated substantially fiat bag made from leather, fabric or the like, which is open at one end and which is adapted to loosely t over the head and neck portion of the golf club head. The bag has similarly shaped opposed sides 3 and 4 which are joined together at their side edges as by stitching. The bag preferably has a lining 5 which also comprises two portions that are attached together and to the opposed sides 3 and 4 by the same stitching. The bag is of suicient length to extend around the neck portion of the club head when in an operative position on the head, thereby also protecting the thread wrappings which sometimes provide a part of the` securing 'means'connecting the head and the club shaft.
Extending around the bag adjacent its open end is a resilient band 6 which is enclosed by transverse strips 'l secured as by stitching to the sides of the said bag. Secured inside the bag in a predetermined position with respect to the closed end thereof is another resilient band 8 which is preferably, although not necessarily, positioned between the lining 5 and the side members 4 and 3. The two bands 6 and 8 may each be made up of two sections of resilient strips which are fastened at their ends to'each other by the same stitching which secures the sides 3 and 4 of the bag one to the other.
The resilient band 8 is disposed in such a predetermined position with respect to the closed end of the bag that it engages with the gradually tapered sides of the neck portion of the golf club head, when the said bag is in an operative position on the said head, thereby normally holding the bag in a snugly tting position over the said club head. The resilient band 8 being normally positioned as aforesaid with respect to the club head prevents the bag from slipping forwardly to a position where the thread wrappings on the said neck are uncovered and thereby exposed. The resilient band 6 being positioned near the opening in the bag contracts the said opening and thereby holds the bag in a suitably gathered and a more closely fitting position with respect to the shaft 2 than would be the case were the said band not present. Both bands 6 and 8 when contracted and in their normal positions are substantially smaller in size than the club head, thereby normally preventing the displacement of the cover except by a direct outward pull in a direction substantially parallel or in line with the shaft 2. Both of the resilient bands may be stretched or enlarged sufiiciently to permit the insertion of the club head into the bag or the removal of the said bag from the head.
What I claim is:
l. A cover for a golf club head of the type having a head portion and a tapering neck portion comprising an elongated bag adapted to t over the head of a golf club and having an opening at one end for the insertion of a golf club head, and a pair of resilient bands secured to the bag, the said bands being substantially smaller in size than the circumference of the said club head but capable of being stretched to an extent permitting the bands to be passed over the head when the bag is placed over or removed from the n 3 club head, one of the said baids being positioned in tensioned relationship with the tapering neck portion of the club head when the bag is operatively positioned on the said club head, and the other of said bands being positioned around the shaft of the club when the cover is operatively positioned on said club head.
2. In a cover for a golf club head of the type having a head portion and a tapering lneck portion, an elongated bag adapted to fit overthe head portion of a golf club and having an opening at one end for the insertion of the said head portion, y
and a resilient band secured to and positioned` I interior-1y of the bag, the said band being sub placed over or removed from the club head, the f said band being positioned in tensioned relationship with the tapering neck portion when the bag is operatively positioned on said club head, and
a second resilient band secured to the bag adjacent the open end thereof and arranged externally of and in tensioned engagement with the sides of the bag, the said band being substantially smaller in size than the circumference of said head portion but capable of being stretched to an extent permitting the band to be passed over the head portion when the bag is placed over or removed from the club head.
