UNITEDSTATES PATENT. OFFICE. t
JOSEPH WIESENFELD, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND; HATTIE M. \VIESENFELD EXECU- TRIX OF SAID JOSEPH WIESENFELD, DECEASED.
SADDLE GIRTH.
Application filed November 18, 1926. Serial No. 149,058.
This invention relates to improvements in the structure of saddlegirths, whereby the girth is provided with an elastic-portion and a protecting sheath for said portion. It is well known that in saddling horses, the horse will sometimes distend his body while the girth is being applied, and then relax his body, leaving the girth loose. To compensate for this occurrence, the saddle girth of my invention is made with an elastic strip at one end which will stretch if the horse expands his body, and contract afterwards, leaving the girth close fitting. As the elastic strip would soon deteriorate and lose its elasticity if exposed to the weather and to the perspiration from the horses body, I provide a leather sheath I which enclosesv this strip, this sheath being secured to the outer end of the elastic strip and extending telescopically over the adjacent end of the leather band which forms the body of the girth, so that with the stretching and relaxing of the elastic strip the sheath may adjust itself along the band.
In the accompanying drawing,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a girth provided with my improvements, the sheath for the elastic strip being shown partly opened;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the outer side of the end of the girth having the elastic strip;
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2; and,
Fig. 5 is a similar section, on a larger scale, than that in Fig. 4.
Referring to the drawing, a represents a leather band composing the main portion of the girth, and Z) indicates a strip of elastic fabric, attached to one end of the leather band. This strip is protected by a leather sheath 0, which is secured to the free end of the strip and extends around the strip and over the adjacent end of the band a. The sheath is not secured to the band, but is slidable telescopically upon it so that it may lie smoothl against the band and slide thereon when he elastic strip is stretched and relaxed.
Referring more in detail tothe structure, the leather band ais folded longitudinally into three folds, (5,0 and a and the elastic fabric is secured between the folds a and a The elastic strip comprises a part 6, having its side edges 1 turned inwardly, and a similar part 19 having its side edges 2 turned inwardly, and these parts and their inwardly turned ends are stitched together and to the folds of the leather band by rows of stitches 3 and 4-. Thus, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the elastic strip has four folds at its sides stitched together and to the leather band. The elastic band is therefore very strong and has a strong connection with the leather.
The sheath 0, composed of a piece of pliable leather, is folded around the elastic strip and the edges of the sheath are stitched together, as shown at 5. The sheath extends slightly beyond the end of the elastic strip, so as to entirely enclose the latter. Straps 6 are doubled over the end of the strip and secured to the elastic strip and to the sheath and carry buckles 7 for attachment to the saddle straps. As shown, each strap 6 has one end 6 on the inner side of the girth, arranged beneath the sheath, and the other end 6", 011 the outerside of the girth, extending over the sheath, and these two ends are stitched together through the four folds of the elastic fabric, making a strong connection between the straps and the fabric. The opposite end of the girth has. buckles 8 secured thereto by straps 9.
It will be evident from the foregoing protect the elastic strip from the weather and from the of the horse.
hat I claim is: V A. saddle girth comprising a longitudinally'folded leather band, a strip of elastic perspiration from the body material secured at one of its ends to one the end of the strip and secured to the end of said band and between the folds strip and sheath, one end of each strap, at thereof, a sheath of pliable material coverthe inner side of the girth, being enclosed 10 ing said strip and secured to its free end, by the sheath.
said sheath extending over the adjacent end In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix portion of the band and being slidable my signature. thereon, and buckle straps doubled over JOSEPH XVIESENFELD.
