2 Claims.

;This invention relates to new .and useful improvements in hangers and the primary object of the present invention is to provide a garment hanger including a pair of extensible and adjustable end portions so designed as to facilitate the use of the same with coatsand the like of various sizes.

Another important object of the present invention is to provide a garment hanger including a main portion applicable for engagement with a supporting structure, and novel and improved means for slidably mounting a pair of garment supporting arms relative to the main portion.

A further object of the present invention is to provide a garment hanger embodying a pair of coacting, telescoped members applicable for engaging trousers, skirts and the likeand which are simultaneously adjusted with the adjustment of the garment supporting arms.

A still further aim of the present invention is to provide an adjustable garment hanger that is simple and practical in construction, strong and reliable in use, neat and attractive in appearance, small and compact in structure, relatively inexpensive to manufacture, and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.

Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:

Figure 1 is an elevational view of the garment hanger constructed in accordance with the present invention, and with parts thereof broken away and shown in section;

Figure 2 is a longitudinal horizontal sectional view taken substantially on the plane of section line 22 in Figure 1;

Figure 3 is perspective View of one of the end portions of the present hanger removed from the remaining portions thereof; and

Figure 4 is an enlarged sectional view of the present invention taken substantially on the plane of section line 44 of Figure 1.

Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration, there is disclosed Integrally formed with the,body portion 1a and projecting outwardly therefrom in opposite directions, is a pair of rigid arms or extensions 22 each of which is provided with outwardly and downwardly inclined channels 24 that slidably engage a pair of substantially rectangular sup: porting. arms 26. The extensions 22 are provided with longitudinal slots 28 in their lower faces that slidably engage threaded guide pins 30 that ar e removably secured to the arms 26, as shown best in Figure 4 of the drawings.

Fixed to the slidable arms 26, at one end thereof, are garment shoulder engaging memebrs that are designated generally by the numeral 32 and which are provided with convexed upper surfaces 34 and flat lower surfaces 36.

Depending from the lower surfaces 36 of the member 32, are hanger rods or spacers 38 which are removably secured to a pair of telescoped or slidably connected

members

40 and 42. One of said members, for example member 40, being tubular and open at one end to slidably engage the remainin member, namely, member 42.

In order to retain the slidable arms 26 adjusted relative to the extension 22, wing nuts 44 are receivably engaged on the guide pins 30 and bear against the lower faces of the extensions 22 adjacent the slots 28.

In practical use of the present hanger, the arms. 26 may be selectively adjusted by nuts 44, so that thehanger will be applicable for garments of various sizes, and so that the same may be quickly and readily reduced to a small article that will facilitate the convenient storage or shipment thereof.

Obviously, the members 48 and 42 will be simultaneously adjusted relative to each other during the adjustment of the arms 26. v

In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, it is believed that a clear understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.

Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

1. An adjustable garment hanger comprising a central body portion, a pair of extensions in- 3 tegrally formed with and projecting outwardly from said body portion, an elongated substantially rectangular passage extending through said extensions and said body portion, a pair of arms slidably received in said passage, garment shoulder engaging members fixed to said arms and adapted to abut said extensions when said arms are completely concealed in said passage, said extensions having lower surfaces and longitudinal slots provided in the lower surfaces of said extensions paralleling and communicating with said passages, said arms having inner end portions, threaded guide pin fixed to and projecting laterally from the inner end portions of said arms, said pins being received in said slots for sliding movement and restricting rotation of said arms relative to said extensions, nuts threaded on said pins and adjustable to bear against the lower surfaces of said extensions to hold the arms against slidin movement and to retain the arms adjusted relative to each-other, spacers fixed to and depending from the garment engaging members, an elongated tube fixed at one end to one of said spacers, and a rod slidably received in said tube and having one end fixed to the remaining of said spacers.

2. In a garment hanger including a body member having a pair of hollow extensions fixed thereto; a pair of arms slidably received in said extensions and having enlarged outer ends forming stops for limitin inward sliding movement '4 of said arms in said extensions and toward each other, said extensions having longitudinal slots intermediate their ends communicating with the interior of said extensions, threaded guide pins fixed to and projecting laterally from said arms, said pins being received in said slots and holding the arms against rotation relative to said extensions, said slots having outer transverse edges adapted to contact said pins to limit outward sliding movement of said arms relative to said extensions and to each other, nuts threaded on said pins and adjustable to bear against said extensions to hold the arms adjusted relative to said extensions, spacers fixed to and depending from the enlarged outer ends of said arms, and a pair of slidably connected members fixed to said spacers and movable with said arms.
