1 Claim.

The present invention relates to coat hangers and is concerned more particularly with an im proved coat hanger construction which provides a plurality of means for carrying various types of garments, which lends itself by virtue of its construction to plastic molding operations, and which is formed to provide a strong hanger of long life and economical construction.

The above and other objects of the invention will be apparent from the following description of a preferred embodiment thereof, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a coat hanger embodying the invention.

Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view through the coat hanger taken as indicated by the line 2--2 in Figure 1.

Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 but showing the coat hanger in open position.

Referring to the drawings, the coat hanger comprises a pair of opposed hanger elements l and l I which have a hinged connection by means of respective hinge elements or arms [2 and It being latched in closed position by means of a hook M. The hinge element I3 is provided with a pair of elevated horizontal portions [3a and a central lower horizontal portion Ma, the hinge element I2 being wound about the horizontal portions l3a to form the hinge connection. The central horizontal portion I la is provided with a sleeve roller I6 for cooperation with the latching portion Mb of hook M. The hook I4 is pivotally carried at its lower end by a support member I! having its ends embedded in the hanger element 10 in the same manner as the respective ends of the hinge arms l2 and I3 are embedded therein. The respective hinge elements I 2 and it are urged apart by a torsion spring l8 and said hinge e1e-== ments and part of the hook constitute a clamping means to hold the hanger elements together with a garment therebetween.

The upper portions of the respective hanger elements I!) and H are similar and are formed along the upper surfaces as coat supporting means and have on their abutting inner surfaces respective pairs of pads 2| for engagement with the opposite sides of a garment to be supported therebetween. To provide strength and also to aid in the coat supporting function of the respec- I tive hanger elements, a plurality of transverse stiffening ribs 22 and 23 are provided along each hanger element with the upper rib 22 forming a smooth downwardly curved extension of the top coat supporting surface.

The hanger element H is provided with depending end portions 26 which terminate in inwardly curved hooks 21 for garment supporting purposes and these depending end portions 26 are connected by an integral garment supporting bar 28.

While I have shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention it will be understood that the invention is capable of variation and modification from the form shown so that its scope should be limited only by the scope of the claim appended hereto.

I claim:

A hanger comprising a pair of opposed hanger elements for holding a garment therebetween, said elements having their upper surfaces at substantially the same elevation, each of said elements along said surfaces including a rib to stiffen same and increase the transverse dimension of the hanger to better support a coat, said ribs extending outwardly in opposite directions from the meeting plane of said elements, and clamping means coacting with and carrying said elements.
