My invention relates broadly to purses and more particularly toa construction of purse that is adapted to. be molded from plastic material in mass production.

One of the objects. of my invention is to provide a construction of purse formed from symmetrically arranged parts which may be molded from plastic material and assembled for inexpensive mass production.

Another object of my invention is to provide a construction of purse moldedfrom plastic material, in which the molded parts are interconnected by a flexible material constituting hinged ends. for they purse.

Still another object of my invention is to provide a construction of purse which is formed from translucent plastic material possessing an ornamental attractive appearance at all times.

Still another object of my invention is to provide a construction of purse formedfrom molded. plastic material with provision for the changeability of ornamental side panels inthe side walls of the purse where the ornamentalside panels are colored or variously ornamented to match, or conform with the dress or accessories of a. womans ensemble.

Another object of my invention resides in a construction of purse having means for readily receiving ornamental panels within transparent side walls. of the, purse through which the ornamental. panels are maintained clearly visible to match the ensemble of the user.

Other and further objects of invention are to. provide a construction of molded purse, of variously translucent and transparent plastic material as set forth more fully in the specification hereinafter following by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:

Referring to the drawings in detail, reierence character I designates a loop of plastic rod material serving as a frame and handle member for the purseand extending adjacent opposite ends of the side wall 2 of the purse. Reference. character 3. designates a similar loop of plastic rod-like material which extends adjacent oppo-. site ends of the transparent side wall of the plastic purse. The hinge-likev connectors, comprise pins. headed at, each end as represented, for example, at 5a and 5b, interconnected by a shank of reduced section, such as is indicated at. 50,. and which passes through aligned ends of the co-acting handle members. The aligned ends of the co-acting handle mem bers l. and 3 are connected together by a half and half overlapping joint. The rod members i and 3 are free to rock about the pintles formed by the hinge-like connectors 5 and The side walls 2 and i are symmetrically shaped and coact to form the receptacle or container for the purse, that is to say, side wall 2 has an integrally formed end wall 7 connected therewith.

Similarly. the side wall 4. has an, end section B, integrally connected therewith. The end walls I and ii are shaped to, constitute rigid ends for the purse having a relatively wide, section at the base of the nurse and tapering to a narrow section at the top. of the purse. In other words, the end sections 1 and 8, integrally formed with the side walls 2 and t, determine the contour oi the vertical section of the purse when the purse is closed. The upper peripheral extremities of the side walls 2 and c are curved sli htly outwardly or directed away from each other as represented at 2a and da, Fig. and serve as the means for supporting the latching device 9 for maintaining the purse closed.

The latching device a comprises a transversely extending flat strip-like bar which is pivotally connected between two coacting plastic cylindrical shaped members. Ill which are secured at a central position to the upper peripheral edge 2a of the side .2. A pin member H extending between the members it serves as a journalling means for the transverse bar 9.. The transverse bar ll carries in spaced position thereon a pair of rod-lik members 82 which serve as an en gaging means with respect to. the peripheral edge is of the plastic side wall 4. The side Walls 2 and i are each slotted as represented at 2b; and M2, Fig. 5, for allowing the quick latching oi 3 transverse bar 9 therethrough in confining the side walls 2 and 4 in closed position.

The side walls '2 and 4 are interconnected by a flexible lining which I have represented at !4 and [5. The flexible lining is stitched in a substantially vertical plane, as represented at l6, for closing the opposite ends of the receptaclelike container for the purse. The soft flexible lining l4 and I5 is stitched to the exterior of a flexible sheet of plastic material represented at IT. The sheet of plastic material ll is substantially transparent and serves as the inner lining for the bottom of the purse. lining I4 and I5 is cut away adjacent the lower ends thereof and is stitched as represented at [8 and I9 to the flexible plastic sheet H. The soft flexible lining Hi and I5 is also stitched to the flexible plastic material H as represented at 20 and 2|.

The interior surfaces of the plastic walls 2 and 4 are provided with molded strips 22 and 23 which extend parallel with the upper peripheral extremities of the side walls. The strips 22 and 23 are under-cut, as represented at 22a and 23a, to serve as a protector for the upper peripheral edges of the soft flexible material I l and i5. The under- cut recesses 22a and 23a also serve as a retaining means for interchangeable ornamental panels 24 and 25 and the backing supports therefor represented at 25 and 2?, respectively. The opposite edges of the ornamental panels 24 and 25, and their reinforcing backings 26 and 2! are slidably guidedin under-cut recesses in oppositely arranged longitudinally extending strip- like members 28 and 29. The strip- like members 28 and 29 are each under-cut as represented at 28a and 29a to receive the 1ongitudinally extending edges of the ornamental panels 24 and 25 and their reinforcing backing means 25 and 21.

The longitudinally extending strips 23 and 28 serve as rails between which the ornamental panel 24 and the reinforcing backing support 26 may slide endwise. extending strips 22 and 29 coact as guides between which the ornamental panel 25 and the associated backing support 27 is arranged to removably slide. Raw edges of the ornamental panels 24 and 25 and their associated backing supports 26 and 21 are normally wholly enclosed by the side Walls 2 and 4 and the associated ends 1 and 8, respectively, as represented in Fig. 3. However, when the purse is open in the position illustrated in Fig. 5 the end wall 8 is retracted, allowing endwise removal of the ornamental panel 25 and the associated backing support 2'! in endwise direction toward the right in Fig. 3. At the same time the ornamental panel 24 and the associated backing support 25 therefor-may be removed endwise from side wall 4 toward the left in Fig. 3 by reason of the retraction of the end wall 7 with respect to side wall 4.

As illustrated in Figs. 6, '7 and 8, various ornamental panels may be provided for insertion and removal from the guide rails 2229, and 2328. In Fig. 6 I have shown the ornamental panel 2 with the associated backing support 26 for the reinforcement and stiffening thereof with a plaid ornamentation thereon represented at 3B. This same ornamental pattern is illustrated as contained on the removable ornamental panel shown inserted in the assembled purse represented in side elevation in Fig.1. The plaid pattern is selected by the user to esthetically match an associated dress ensemble. If, however, the

In Fig. '7 I have illustrated a removable panel 3! of solid color represented by the color lining as the color blue. In Fig. 8 I have represented a wholly different ornamental insertable and removable panel at 32. The panel 32 has been lined to represent the color red. Various designs of colors may be employed for the insertable and removable panels illustrated in Figs. 6,

7 and 8. To provide effective ornamentation I provide a polished or transparent surface for the central portion of the side walls 2 and 4 of the purse, as represented at 33 in Fig. 1, while the upper and lower portions of the side walls 2 and 4 are permitted to remain opaque or translucent, as represented at 34 and 35. Thus the side walls of the purse are rendered alternately opaque and transparent in separate zones, allowing the ornamentation or color pattern of the removable panels of the types shown in Figs. 6-8 to be.

The side walls 2 and 4 of the plastic material may be ornamented in various designs or initials to meet the individual tastes of the users for visibly showing desired ornamentation through the desired designs in the transparent side walls of the purse. The ends of the purse represented at i and 8 are also provided with stippled,.transluc-ent or opaque surfaces illustrated, for example, at 36 in Fig. 2. Thus, the interior of the purse, ex; cept for the display of the ornamental insertable and removable display panels 3i}, 3! or 32 is excluded from sight, controlling in desired manner the display of the selected ornamentation through the transparent zone portions 33 of the side walls of the purse.

I may select various materials for lining the purse, as represented b the soft flexible material I4 and I5, which is stitched to the flexible plastic sheet l1. One such material which I have used to good advantage is chamois skin. I realize, however, that other kinds of cloth or stranded glass webbing or other material may be readily used. One of the features of my invention resides in the fact that when a transparent plastic sheet i1 is employed in association with the soft flexible material M and i5, the effect of a transparent bottom to the purse is obtained, which facilitates locating small objects in the purse. Moreover,

the plastic sheet I! serves to impart resiliency to represented by way of example in the drawings.

Inasmuch as the parts of the purse are symmetrically construeted from molded material, the

. structure may be inexpensively manufactured on a mass production scale.

I realize that modification in the details and 7 construction and manufacture may be made and I desire that it be understood that no limitations upon my invention are intended other than may be imposed by the scope of the appended claims.

What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows: 1. A ladys purse comprising a pair of hingedly connected handle members looped to form a hand-carrying means, a pair of substantially transparent plastic side wall portions enveloped and supported by said handle members, a receptacle-like carrier connected to the interior of said side wall portions, a pair of longitudinally extending, spaced guide rails mounted on each side wall portion, with the rails of each pair disposed in horizontal alignment with the corresponding rails of the other pair adjacent the top and bottom of said plastic side wall portions, and insertable and removable ornamental panels engageable between said rails, and longitudinally slidable with respect to said side wall portions for selectively displaying desired ornamentation through the substantially transparent side walls of the purse.

2. A ladys purse comprising in combination a frame formed by a pair of pivotally connected coacting handle members, a pair of plastic side wall portions containing alternate zones which are transparent and opaque enveloped and supported by said handle members, a pair of rail-like members extending in spaced, substantially parallel, and corresponding positions adjacent the interior surfaces of each of said plastic side wall portions, insertable and removable ornamental panels slidable longitudinally between said rail-like members from the ends of said purse, and a flexible container suspended between said coacting raillike members.

A ladys purse comprising in combination a frame formed by a pair of pivotally connected coacting handle members, a pair of plastic side wall portions containing alternate zones which are transparent and opaque enveloped and supported by said handle members, a pair of rail-like members extending in spaced, substantially parallel positions near the top and bottom edges of the interior surfaces of each of said plastic side wall portions, insertable and removable ornamental panels slidable between said rail-like members in a longitudinal direction with respect to the ends of said purse, a flexible container suspended between said coacting rail-like members, and means connected with said side wall portions for normally tending to urge the side wall portions of the purse to a substantially closed position.

A ladys purse comprising a pair of molded plastic members each comprising an integrally related side and end wall portion adapted. to coast to form a closed housing, transparent zones formed in said side wall portions, carrier means hingedly connected with each other and enveloping said plastic members and serving to support the coacting side wall portions, a bag-like container supported interiorly of said side wall portions, guide means carried by the interior surfaces of said side wall portions near the top and bottom edges thereof and. ornamental slidable panels slidably engageable in said guide means and longitudinally movable to a position interiorly of said side wall portions for displaying said removable and insertable ornamental panels through the transparent zones of said side wall portions.

A ladys purse comprising a hingedly connected two-part carrying frame, a pair of plastic side wall members each having a right-angularly positioned and oppositely located end member integrally related thereto, said plastic wall mem bers coacting when closed to form a purse housing enveloped by said carrying frame, a container suspended from the interior Walls of said purse housing, spaced guide rails extending longitudinally of the interior surfaces of each of said plastic side wall members near the top and bottom edges thereof, insertable and removable ornamental panels slidably engageable within said guide rails for longitudinal insertion or removal with respect to said side wall members, said side wall members being transparent throughout parts of the surface thereof for visually displaying the ornamental properties of said insertable and removable ornamental panels.

In a ladys purse a frame comprising a pair of coacting substantialy rigid carrier members hingedly connected to form a support, a pair of plastic side wall members each having an integrally and right-angularly related end portion, which plastic members coast in their closed position to form a purse housing and are disposed within said carrier members, a transparent plastic sheet of material secured at its opposite peripheries to the upper interior portions of said plastic side Wall members and looped interiorly of said housing, flexible sheet-like material stitched to said transparent plastic sheet and connected with said side wall members to form a receptacle within said purse housing, said flexible sheet-like material terminating short of the bottom portion of said transparent plastic sheet for providing a path of clear vision through the bottom of said purse housing.

7. A ladys purse comprising in combination a two-part frame hingedly connected to form a carrier, a pair of elastic side wall members enveloped and supported in coacting relation on the two parts of said frame, said plastic side Wali members each having an integrally and right-angularly connected end portion, which plastic members co-act in their closed position to form a purse housing and terminate in substantially parallel longitudinally extending peripheral extremities, the peripheral extremities of said plastic side wall members being centrally slotted with aligned slots for the passage of a transverse confining bar therethrough, a support secured to the longitudinally extending edge periphery of one of said side wall members, a bar pivotally connected with said support, a confining latch carried by said bar in spaced relation to said support whereby said bar may be moved to a position extending transversely through the aligned slots in the longitudinally extending peripheral extremities of said plastic side wall members for confining said plastic side members in closed position.
