SHUTTER-WORKER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.. 251,609, dated December 2'7, 1881.

Application filed October 18, 1881.

To all whom it may concern:

.Beit known that we, WM. T. FAUNT LE ROY and JNO. D. SUMMERS, of Evansville, in the county of Vanderburg and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Opening and Closing Shutfrom the inside of a room without the necessity of raising the sash.

The nature of our invention consists in the combination of a two-part horizontally-divided shell provided with leaves, like a hinge, a beveled water-tight joint for said sections, beveled spur-wheels, and a rod provided with a knob or handle for actuating the upper section of the said shell, as will be hereinafter explained.

In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view, and Fig. 2 a central vertical section, of our hinge.

A B designate two horizontal hemispherical sections, of metal, formed with a circular beveled joint, a, which is adapted to exclude water from, the interior of the sections. These hemispherical seclions A B constitute't-he hollow center of a hinge, of which 0 D are the leaves, E the pintle, and F the eye. The leaf of the bottom section, A, is intended to be secured to the casing of a window and the leaf of the top section, B, is intended to be secured to a shutter. The bottom section, A, is constructed .with the pintle E rising centrally from it and entering the socket or eye F of the top section, B, thus keeping this section in its place on the bottom section, and allowing the former to oscillate freely about the pintle. The roof of the section B of the shell has cast on it a beveled spur-wheel, G, which is concentric to the vertical axis of the pintle, and with this wheel engage the teeth of a beveled spur-wheel, J,

This rod Khasits outer end bearing in the lower section of the shell and its inner bearing in a collar, L, which is fixed to the inner face of the window-casing, through which latter the rod K passes freely. The inner end of rod K is provided with a handle or knob, N, by turning which the shutter can be opened or closed, or adjusted to any desired angle.

One important feature of our invention is that the lower edge of the upper section of the shell A is beveled downward and outward, and thus sheds water from the joint a, which latter is'kept tight by the section A grinding on the section B.

It will be seen from the above description that we have an inverted hemispherical cup applied so as to oscillate horizontally on a cup of somewhat similar form, the two cups meeting at a beveled self-tightening joint, a. It will also be seen that the beveled wheel G and the inverted cup B are cast entire, while the pintle E and the bottom cup are also cast entire. We in this manner not only cheapen the hinge, but there are no parts liable to become 1oose,or to break when subjected to the roughest use.
