BED BOTTOM.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIC GEORGEKEENHOLTS, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
BED-BOTTOM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 251,241, dated December 20, 1881,
Application filed February 15, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE KEENHOLTS, of the city of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bed-Bottoms, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to that class of spring bed-bottoms which are composed of two or more sections which can be folded upon each other when the bed-bottom is required to be transported from one place to another.
The object of this invention is to produce a simple and cheap bed-bottom of this character which can be readily handled.
My invention consists of a bed-bottom composed of two sections, which are hinged together to fold backward, whereby the rigid frame of one section will rest against the frame of the other section of the bed-bottom when the latter is folded up; also, in providing the hinges whereby the two sections of the bottom are attached together with removable springbolts which can be withdrawn, whereby the two sections of the bed-bottom are disconnected, when each section can be removed separately.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of my improved spring bed-hottom. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fig..
3 shows the bed-bottom folded. Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional view of the hinge.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the several figures.
A represents the longitudinal slats of the bed-bottom, which may be constructed of wood or metal, as may be preferred; and B represents the cross-pieces to which the slats A are secured.
0 represents the springs, secured to the upper sides of the slats A in a usual and wellknown manner.
The cross-pieces B are each composed of two separate pieces, which are connected together by a hinge, (I, applied to the under side of the two parts of each cross-piece, so that the two parts of each cross-piece swing toward each other in folding the bed-bottom. The two knuckles of the hinge d are connected by a spring-bolt, e, which is readily inserted and withdrawn. The springs O, which are applied to the same section of the bed-bottom, are connected by a frame, f, and links g in the usual way, and the two adjacentinner rows of springs of the two sections of the bottom are not connected in any manner to leave the two sections free to swing backward. When the bottom is folded the frame of one section rests against the frame of the other section, and the springs 0 project on both sides of the folded bottom,. as shown in Fig.3. Upon withdrawing the springboltscthe two sections aredisconnected, and each section can be removed separately, and, if desired, one may be placed upon the other for shipment.
I claim as my invention- 1. A spring bed-bottom composed of two sections, each provided with an independent system of springs, O, and connected by hinges d, applied to the under side of the frames of the sections, whereby the latter are enabled to fold backward, substantially as set forth.
2. A spring bed-bottom composed of sections connected by hinges (I, provided with removable spring-bolts e, whereby the two sections are readily separated or connected, substantially as set forth.
GEO. KEENHOLTS.
