Description

UNITED STATES cm t PATENT OFFICE.
EUGENE JONES, OF GOLD HILL, NEVADA.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 251,054, dated December 20, 1881.
Application filed July 18, 1881. (X specimers.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EUGENE JONES, of Gold Hill, Storey count-y, State of Nevada, have invented aCompound for the Protection of Wire Ropes, &c.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact desciiptiou thereof.
My invention relates to a compound which is used for covering wire ropes such as are employed for mining purposes, rigging of ships, cable-railroads,and in other places; and it can also be applied to the bottoms of ships, waterpipes, and other metallic surfaces.
The object of my compound is to prevent corroding or crystallizing of the article on which it is placed either when used under'water or exposed to the atmosphere.
In manufacturing my compound Itake. thirty (30) gallons of tar, which has been previously heated or par 01 ed, and after placing it in a. suitable receptacle, heat it,and then introduce the following ingredients-to wit: five (5) gallons mgedillglv two and one-half (2%) ga lons black pitc and eight 8) pounds rosin. After the whole h as been [ll0l"( )l] ghl y mixed and heated to a boiling-point I pour into the mixture eighteen (18) ounces of allic aci I do not materially change the above proportions, whether making larger or smaller quantities of the compound.
I usually apply to fiat surfaces with a brush or similar article; but in case of cables or other surfaces which are to be used in hot miningshafts or under water they are covered by the mixture when in a boiling-hot condition.
For the sake of economy I sometimes substitute tanuers bark for gallic acid.
I am aware tar, tallow, pitch, rosin, tanning material, and the like have been used as ingredients in compositions for coating materials; but I am not aware that the herein-claimed compound, as an entirety, has been used, and in the proportions set forth.
Having thus described my invention, what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A compound for covering metallic surfaces, consisting of tar, tallow, black pitch, rosin, and gallic acid, in about the proportions and for the purpose herein described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
EUGENE JONES.
