Description

May 9, 1950 c. E. MocAw CONVERTIBLE SEAT AND TABLE ASSEMBLY Filed Dec. 18, 1945 Mw, fifi/ways' Patented May 9, 1950 i i, UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Clyde E. McCaw, Coeur dAlene, Idaho Application December 18, 1945, Serial No. 635,625v
3 Claims. l This invention relates -to a combination lawn table and bench, so constructed that the table top may be associated with the bench as a back rest therefor.
It is an object of the invention to provide a lawn table and bench, of rugged and durable construction, and the table having a pivotally mounted table top, which may be pivoted into proper relation with respect to the bench to form a back rest for the bench.
It is a further object of the invention to providel a combination bench and table, capable of being converted to a bench with back rest, which shall be especially rugged and sturdy in either form, and which shall be particularly adapted for picnic outings, camping, pleasure resorts and the like.
The above and further objects of the inventionwill become apparent upon study of the following specications when taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a front elevational view of an embodiment of the invention;
Figure 2 is an end view of Figure 1, partly in.
section, to show a detail; and
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional View of the detail of a pivot and locking key arrangement.
Reference is now had to the figures of the drawings, wherein the same numerals are applied to like parts, in the several views.
Numeral I represents a table top, secured to the under surface of which are two cross braces 2, each adjacent to an end of the table top and extending from the front to the rearward edges of the table top. The cross braces 2 are beveled adjacent the forward ends thereof, as indicated by the numeral 3.
Extending perpendicularly from the cross braces are depending supports 4, each support 4 being secured to a cross brace 2 adjacent the center of its lower surface.
The supports 4 are pivotally secured to the upper end portions of'a pair of upright legs 5, by respective bolts 5 one of which extends through each support 4 and its associated leg 5, and which are threaded to receive nuts l. Washers 8 are interposed between the nuts and the corresponding supports 4 and between the bolt heads and legs 5.
The legs 5 rest on horizontal base supports 9 and are rigidly secured thereto by right angled brackets I0, suitably bolted to both the supports 9 and the legs 5. A cross brace II extends between the legs 5 at the rearward edges thereof and rests on portions of horizontal supports 9,
2 said cross brace II being secured by any suitable means to the legs 5 and to the supports 9.
An elongated seat I2 is supported by cross legs I3, I4, legs 'I3 extending downwardly and rear-v wardly from the forward edge of the seat I2, and the legs I4 extending forwardly and downwardly from the rearward edge of the seat I2. The legs I3 are secured to the horizontal supports 9 on their outer surfaces and the legs I4 are secured to the supports 9 on their inner surfaces.
Each pair of cross legs I3 and I4 are separated,
at their cross over point by the width of the sup-- port 9, and are braced at a point immediately un-l der the seat I2 by a trapezoidal brace I5 which may be secured at its upper edge to the seat I2, and which, having slant sides iiush with the outer edges of the legs I3, I4 of each pair of legs may be secured thereto by any suitable means.
Additional bracing is provided for the inner legs I4 which are provided with a cross brace I6 secured to each leg I4 by a pair of angle irons I1. The seat is thus supported in fixed relationship to said pair of upright legs with its end edge spaced from and substantially parallel thereto.
The supports 4, which are pivotally secured to legs 5 by means of bolts Ii, are normally prevented from pivoting by keys I8 extending through both supports 4 and legs 5, in registering apertures provided for that purpose. The keys I8 are constructed in the form of metal rods having ring ends.
When it is desired to convert the table top I into a back rest for the seat I2, the keys I8 are removed from the registering apertures in the legs 5 and the supports 4 and are inserted in suitable apertured receptacles I9 provided on the cross braces 2, with a portion of the rod ends of the keys I 8 extending beyond the forward edge of the table top I.
Provided in the seat I2 are two holes 20 extending from the rearward upper edge of the seat I2, downwardly and forwardly at an angle of about with the horizontal, although this angle is not critical and may be varied as other dimensions are varied. such as the Width of the table top I, the width of the seat I2 and the spacing between the seat and table top, both vertically and horizontally. The holes 20 receive the rod ends of keys I8 and thereby serve to lock the table top I to the seat I2, in proper position to form a back rest for said seat I 2.
Having described a preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that various dimensions, arrangements, combinations and expedients utilized therein may be modllied without 3 departing from the spirit of the invention and that I desire tobe limited only by the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. A convertible seat and table assembly comprising a pair of spaced apart base supports, a pair of upright legs extending respectively up- Wardly from said base supports at corresponding ends the'of. a pair of crossed-ieee fexteifdiigup: wardly trom 'ach-,basesippork a 'seat secured t6 the upper ends of said pairs Vof crossed-legs and spaced from said upright legs, a table top, a pairof depending supports secured to-,the underside of said table top one adjace't 'a'f d thereof, means pivotally connecting each of 's'aiclr-depend'-V ing Vsupports to the upper end portion of a corresponding upright leg foiV fnver'iient f said table top between a, generally horizontal position upon the upper ends offsaid upright legs Vand a position in whichrits lower edge contacts theinner eg f saids'eat andit inclines`V upwardly to- Ward the, upper ends of sai'dupright legs to constfta nbac-li'` forsaid seat, means operatively lated witlrsaidupriglit legs andvvsaid table o releasably lock` said top in said generally Fofit'al position, *andV releasably connecting the lower edge ofwsa-id top to tlie innerV edge of said-` sit 1i/lien said top is in said inclined position.-

said uprightV legs for movement between a genrally horizontal position and an inclined positigri" innwhicli itsyllower edge rests upon the inner edge of said seat and it constitutes a back for saidsat, inea-iis operative to releasably lock said topto said lupriglfii; legs in said generally horizontal position, and fieans operative to releasably conii'e'o't tlie contacting edges of said seat and top when said top is in said inclined position, said locking' mea-ns for said top .and Said upright lgs and for said top and said Seat incliiifrlg` ag common pai-r 0f lockingI pins:
