This invention relates to an improved construction for flexible pocket receptacles such as billfolds.

This application is a continuation in part of my copending application Serial No. 598,835 filed June 11, 1945, now Patent No. 2,489,364 issued November 29, 1949, in that the present invention involves a specific adaptation of certain broad features disclosed in said copending application.

In th manufacture of billfolds it is desirable to avoid the use of stitching, and where stitching cannot be entirely avoided to keep it at a mini-- mum and so construct thebilli'old that the stitching is subjected to a minimum amount of strain. Where it is desired to combine different types or colors of leather in a billfold the various parts must be secured together and this in the past has frequently required an undesirable amount of stitching and the location of stitches in undesirable positions in the billfold structure. Furthermore an increased demand by billfold users for the incorporation of a plurality of hinged. pass-case holders in the billfold with means to confine such holders, as well as means for holding the billfold closed, that is: folded, has further complicated the problems of providing multicolored billfolds while at the same time avoiding undesirable quantities and locations of stitches.

The principal object of the present invention is to overcome the difficulties and problems mentioned and to provide a construction applicable to a relatively wide variety of billfold arrangements in which two or more colors or types of leather may be combined together with desired closure members, all with a minimum of stitching and conforming to acceptable practice with respect to the location of the stitching.

Other and more specific objects and advantages will be made apparent in the following specification and claims.

Referring to the drawings Figs. 1 to 9 show a billfold, embodying my invention, in which a pass-case and closure means as well as billfold closure means are provided. The billfold is made up of the five pieces of leather, or equivalent material, shown respectively in Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive. These pieces comprise a rear wall member I having

2 and 3 extending from op posite ends thereof as shown in Fig. 1. In Fig. 2 is shown a panel member 4 provided with a flap member 5 which, when folded as later described, becomes a wall member of one end section of the front wall assembly. Each of the members i and 5 is provided with an extension or tongue in the form indicated at B and 1 respectively. In Fig. 3 is shown a second panel member 9 provided with a flap H) which when folded as later described becomes a wall member of the other end section of the front wall assembly. Each of the members 9 and I6 is provided with an extending tongue indicated at H and I2 respectively. The lower edge of member 9 is formed with a stitching tab [3. In Fig. 4 is shown an intermediate wall member I4 of conventional form, having end projections Hi.

In one manner of assembling the elements so far described, the upper edge portion it of the rear wall member I is folded over and cemented thereon to form a finished edge in accordance with usual practice. It will be assumed that as viewed in Fig. 1 the fiesher side of the leather is uppermost and that in Figs. 2, 3 and 1 grain side is uppermost. The panel member 4 is superimposed on the left end of member I4 as viewed in Fig. 4 and flap 5 is folded over the upper edge of member I4 with the adjacent projection I5 extending rearwardly through a slot I'I formed in flap 5. Similarly member 9 is superposed on the right end of member I4, the flap I being folded over the upper edge thereof with the adjacent projection I on member I4 extending rearwardly through slot I8 formed in flap III. The described folding operations position tongues I3 and I in coinciding back to back relation. In such position they are inserted outwardly through a slot I9 formed in end member 2 adjacent its line of fold, end member 2 being folded over into superposed position on member 4 as shown in Fig. 6. Similarly the superposed tongues II and I2 are inserted through slot 2:: formed in member 3 and the latter folded onto member 9 as shown in Fig. '7.

The pass-card supporting member shown separately in Fig. 5 comprises an attaching portion 2|, provided with a stitching tab 22, and a cover forming portion 23, the portion intermediate portions 2I and 23 being folded along lines 24 as shown in Fig. 8 to provide means to which a plurality of card holders 25 may be connected as by a conventional spiral wire or plastic binding member 26. Member 2| is inserted between members 4 and I3 as shown in Fig. 6 with the stitching tab 22 aligned with tabs 8 and I3 along the bottom edge of the rear wall I. A single line of stitching 21 along the bottom edge of each end section below the bottom edge member It serves to hold the parts together. The tongues 5 and T are cemented together outwardly of the billfold, as are tongues II and I2. The pass case cover member 23 is shown provided with a strap 23 beheath which two ply tongue S-l releasably engages to hold the pass case closed. The two ply tongue I I--I2 is provided with one member 29 of a snap fastener, the other member 36 of the fastener being secured to the rear wall I (Fig. 1), providing means for releasably holding the billfold closed.

The assembly sequence above described is not essential. For example if desired the end section panel and flap members may be inverted as shown in Fig. and the tongue extension I2 carried by the flap Iii inserted through slot 20. The base of tongue I2 may then be stitched, as a fiat stitching operation, to the rear wall, as at 3I, to close the opening between the tongue and the rear wall thus preventing any tendency of this opening to gap when the billfold is closed. Member It is then superposed on member It with the adjacent projection I5 extending through slot I3, flap 9 folded down on member I4, tongue II inserted through slot 20, flap 3 folded over on member 9, bringing the parts into position to be stitched as previously described. It will be understood that the other end may be similarly constructed. In the form shown in Figs. 11, 12 and 13 the rear wall 32 is provided with a bottom closing flap 33 extending from the lower edge thereof. End section panel member 311 is provided with flap 35, the

36 and 3! respectively, these members being substantially similar to the corresponding members of the form previously described, except that the bottom edge of memer 3 is not cut away to form a stitching tab. The flap member 35 is folded over an intermediate wall member 38 (Fig. 13) identical with member I 4 previously described and having projections not shown which engage in the slot 39 formed in flap 35. The so assembled parts are superimposed on rear wall 32 with the

36 and 31 extending from the end of the billfold and bottom flap 33 is folded up over member 34 as shown in Fig. 13, the outer end edges of members 34 and coinciding with the adjacent end edge of rear wall 32. A single line of stitching 40 at each end of the billfold serves to hold all the parts in position. Tongues 36 and 3'! are cemented together as previously described.

A modified arrangement of the form just described is shown in Figs. 14, 15 and 16 in which the rear wall 32 is provided with an integral extension tongue 4 I, in a position to underlie and coincide with

31 and 36 when the parts are assembled as previously described, providing a three ply tongue. Preferably tongue 3? is shortened as shown at s2 in Figs. 15 and 16. Shortened tongue 32 is at least of sufilcient length to be included in and held by the line of stitching 40, and. may extend a short distance outwardly of the end of the billfold between tongues ll and 36, the latter being cemented to tongue 42 and to each other.

I claim:

1. In a billfold of the type having end sections foldable one on the other about a transverse line of fold and having a rear wall extending throughout the length of the billfold, an end section construction comprising a front wall member extending from an edge of the rear wall and folded onto the flesher side of the rear wall, a line of stitching connecting the adjacent free edges of the rear wall and said front wall member to form a pocket open at the top and along the side adjacent said transverse line of fold, a panel member formed as a separate piece and positioned in said pocket, at least a portion of one edge of said panel member being included in said line of stitching to hold the panel member in position, a flap extending from the upper edge of the panel member and folded downwardly into said pocket, tongues formed integral with said panel member and said flap and extending in superposed relation outwardly through an enabling means in the closed side of the pocket at the end of the billfold.

2. In a billfold of the type having end sections foldable one on the other about a transverse line of fold and having a rear wall extending throughout the length of the billfold, an end section construction comprising a front wall member extending from the end edge of the rear wall and folded onto the flesher side of the rear wall with a slot in its line of fold, a line of stitching connecting the lower edges of the rear wall and said front wall member to form a pocket, a panel member formed as a separate piece and positioned in said pocket, at least a portion of the lower edge of said panel member being included in said line of stitching, a flap extending from the upper edge of the panel member and folded downwardly into said pocket at the rear of the panel member,

4. In a billfold of the type having end sections foldable one on the other about a transverse line oi fold and having a rear wall extending throughout the length of the billfold, an end section construction comprising a front wall member extending from the bottom edge of the rear wall and H folded onto the flesher side of the rear wall, a line of stitching connecting the end edges of the rear wall and said front wall member to form a pocket, a panel member formed as a separate piece and positioned in said pocket, at least a portion of the end edge of said panel member being included in said line of stitching, a flap extending from the upper edge of the panel member and folded down- 6 wardly into said pocket at the rear of the panel member, tongues formed integral with said panel member and said flap and extending outwardly from the end of the pocket, in superposed relation, through said line of stitching, the rear wall having an integral tongue extending from its end rearwardly of and coinciding with the tongue extending from said panel member, the tongue extending from the flap being shorter than the tongues carried by the rear wall and panel member but at least of a length to be included in said line of stitching, the last mentioned tongues being connected together outwardly of said short tongue.
