ATTO 75 Patented Mar. 28, 1950 CABINET HAVING COMBINED CLOSURE AND WRITING TABLE Max Alexander Reens, Bussum, Netherlands Application September 20, 1946, Serial No. 698,210 In the Netherlands September 24, 1945 2 Claims.
This invention relates to furniture construction, and more especially to a rotatory device for a writing-table fall board.
One of the principal objects of the present invention is to provide a construction in which the fall board can be brought from the closed vertical position into the open horizontal position without making use of conventional hinges.
Another important object is to provide a device of this character by which the upper surface of the open fall board is brought in the same plane with the upper surface of the bottom plank of that partition of the writing-table that can be closed by the fall board.
Another object of the invention is to provide a new and improved construction by which the fall board in its closed position is taken up in the inner space through the open side of the writingtable that is closed by the fall board, in such a way that an even outer surface is obtained and all parts of the mechanism are fully enclosed and invisible in this position-of the fall board.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a supporting mechanism for the fall board which allows a big load in its open position without overloading the parts of the writing-table interconnected by the rotatory device for the writing-table fall board.
Other objects and aims of the invention, more or less specific than those referred to above, will be in part obvious and in part pointed out in the course of the following description of the elements, combinations and arrangement of parts constituting the invention and the scope of protection contemplated will be indicated in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing wherein I have illustrated a preferred form of embodiment of my invention:
Figure 1 shows a vertical section through a part of a partition of a writing-table with fall board in closed postion.
Figure 2 shows a vertical section corresponding to the lower part of Figure 1 with the fall board in open position.
According to Figure 1 a fall board I closes a space whereof 2 is the bottom wall, 3 the upper wall and 4 one of the side walls. Against the inner surface and near the sides of fall board I two parallel carrying guide rods 5, one of which is visible in the figure, are slidably mounted in guide sleeves 6 fitted on the fall board. The back part of each guide rod is bent upward in such a way that it extends into the writing-table space. The end of this bent part of each guide rod 5 is provided with a sideways projecting pin 1 fitted in a guide slot 8 of a bushing guide 9. The latter is mounted against the side wall 4. The guide slot slopes upward in backward direction if seen from the front side of the writingtable.
The top wall 3 is provided with a stop cam ii) in order to fix the fall board I in its closed position.
Each carrying rod 5 bears between the guide sleeves 6, an adjustably mounted stop plate H, which is fixed in the desired position by means of a screw bolt l2, extending through an ovalshaped hole of stop plate II and screwed into rod 5.
In closed position the fall board 1 is taken up in the inner space of the writing table between the ends of the walls thereof, of which the bottom and top walls 2 and 3 and the side-wall 4 are shown in the drawing. All parts of the rotatory device bearing the fall board are fully protected and invisible in this position, which is an important improvement compared with the usual hinges.
On opening the fall board I by drawing it out and lowering it, it will first move outwards. The pins 1 glide downwards through the guide slots 8 and the rods 5 glide downward through the guide sleeves 6. As soon as the fall board I has left the mouth of the space Within the writingtable it is at the same time turned open and lowered. During this part of the movement the pins 1 turn in the slots 8 and at the same time the rods 5 glide further through the guide sleeves 6 until stop plate I l abuts the foremost guide sleeve 6. In the open position of fall board I the back parts of carrying rods 5 rest on the bottom wall 2 of the inner writing-table space while the pins 1 are pressed against the inner front surfaces of the corresponding slots 8.
It is not difficult to choose the dimensions of the parts of the rotatory device so that in the open position of the fall board I, shown in Figure 2, the inner surface of the fall board lies in the same plane as the upper surface of the bottom Wall 2 and that the inner edge of the fall board exactly joins said bottom wall.
The load on the fall board I is suspended through the intermediary of the sleeves 6 from the carrying bars the latter being supported on the bottom plank "2 of the writing -table along a sufiicient length (from the joint between fall board 5 and plank 2 up to the knee of the upward bend of the rods) to avoid an overloading of of the parts of the writing table. Any strong stresses at the adjoining edges of the fall board and of the writing-table wall in alignment therewith, such as are caused by known constructions using hinges, are avoided.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A rotary device for a writing table fall board, comprising two parallel guide rods each having a bent up leg and an outwardly extending projection at the free end thereof, bracket means for slidably mounting said rods on said fall board adjacent its side edges with said bent up legs disposed adjacent the rear edge of said fall board and adapted to extend beyond the rear edge of said fall board, a pair of slotted guide members each receiving one of said outwardly extending projections of said bent up legs and adapted to be secured to the opposite inner walls of a writing table with said slots sloping upwardly and away from said fall board.
2. In combination a Writing table having walls forming an enclosed space open at one side, a fall board fitting into said open side, a set of guide sleeves mounted in axially spaced position on the inner surface of said fall board at each 4 of its opposite vertical edges, a parallel guide bar slidably mounted in each set of said guide sleeves and having a bent up end extending into the space formed by the walls of said writing table, an adjustable stop secured to each of said guide rods between its respective sleeves, a transverse pin carried by each of said bent up ends and extending laterally and outwardly therefrom, guide members secured to the inner faces of opposite side walls of the writing table each with a slot sloping upwardly and rearwardly into said enclosed space and slidably receiving one of said laterally extending pins of said guide bars.
