Description
June 16, 1942. DE; WITT RAMSVEY 2,286,573
` DooR MOUNTING Filed July 29, 1940 ATTORNEYS Piaiesrea .iene is, i942 The present invention relates to improvements in door mountings and is especially devised for hanging sliding doors in dwellings, bookcases, cabinets and the like.
An object of the invention resides in the provision of a door mounting having a hanger designed so that it may be'quickly and easily disconnected from a support.
Another object of the invention resides in the provision of a hanger which is relatively simple and durable in construction.
A further object of the invention resides in Application ru1y 29,194o, serial No. 348,221 1 claim. (o1. 14a-s1) Y a longitudinally extending recess I and grooves the provision of a hanger which may be produced at a relatively low cost.
The invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically pointed out -in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary front elevational view of a door and mounting embodying the features of the present invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged vertical sectional view being taken substantially on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an elevational view of the hanger blade attached to the door with the door being shown in section.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the hanger blade detached from its sliding block.
Figure 5 is a vertical sectional view of the laminated header and illustrating a double track.
In its present illustration, the invention includes a laminated header which is generally designated by the reference numeral 8, said header being formed of a plurality of plies 9 of wood held in laminated relation by any desired means. The lamination of the material adds strength to the header and reduces to a minimum the amount of warpage. The header 8 is adapted to be supported in the door frame I0, which frame may be of the type used for sliding doors either interior or exterior, for cupboards, cabinets and the like. As shown in Figure 1 of the drawing, however, the header 8 is used with a single door Il which conceals the opening I2 formed in the frame. When in open position, the door I I is received within the pocket I3 which is defined by the framework I4.
blade become an integral part of the door or pense and upkeep.
of the plies of wood are milled internally to form I6. 'A block I1 is slidably mounted in the recess I5, said block carrying members I8, adapted to engage the grooves I6. The grooves I6 and members I8 assure positive Steerage as the door is operated so that no side drag will be encountered by side shifting of the block I'I. It is to be understood that any number of tracks may be formed yin a single header and in Figure 5 of the drawing, the header is illustrated with a pair of recesses I5 formed therein. Each recess is, of course,'formed with grooves I6 for receiving the members I8.
A hanger blade I9 is carried by the block II, said hanger blade being preferably stamped from sheet metal and formed with a foot portion 20 slotted as indicated at 2|. The hanger blade I9 moves within a vertical slot 22 formed in the header 8 which communicates with the recess I5 and said hanger blade extends within the block II and. is attached thereto by means of a transverse pin 23. The blade I9 forms the means of attaching the door II to the sliding block I'I and thus the sliding block and hanger sash Ii. In practice, two of these units are used to hang each door or sash.
An exteriorly threaded screw bolt 24 is held by means of a nut 25 in the top of the door Il, the upper end of said screw bolt extending through the slot 2i of the foot portion 20 and is held therein by means ofthe nut 26. As more particularly shown in Figure 4 of the drawing, the hanger blade I9 is cut out as indicated at 21 to facilitate the placement and removal of the nut 26 so as to attach and detach the door II.
The advantages of the slide unit including the block I'I and members I8 which are movable in the recess I5 and grooves I6, over the rolling type unit, are a quiet, smooth, positive and longlife operation as well as economy in initial ex- Ii desired, the grooves I6 may be formed in hardwood, metal or any other suitable material, so as to provide a hard smooth sliding surface thus giving minimum of friction and a smooth, silent action. The block I1 may be formed of hardwood, metal or any other suitable material and the primary function of the block is to provide a holder for the anti-friction slide members I8. As afore indicated, however, the block I1 carries the hanger blade I9 which, when in operating position, is attached to the top of the door I I. y
The units when assembled at the factory include the header 8, blocks I1 and hanger blade I9, while the door Il will be provided with the screw bolts 24 ready for attachment to the foot 20. The advantages of this type of invention will mean a material saving of time and eiort in the construction of a building, cabinet or the` like as well as the assurance that the units will operate satisfactorily by reason' of the correct alignment and installation of the several parts of the invention.
therefore, such changes and modiiications may 20 be made therein as do not affect the spirit of the invention nor exceed the scope thereof as expressed in the appended claim.
What is claimed is: A
In a door mounting, a hanger member formed from an elongated rectangular shaped plate comprising a vertically depending section having an aperture in the upper center portion and a rectangular recess in the lower center portion, a horizontal section extending laterallyirom the lower edge of the vertical section having a width approximately corresponding to the width of the upper section, the said horizontal section having an elongated slot opening at the outer edge thereof and directed inward toward the vertical section, and a flange extending horizontally from the bottom of the vertical section in a direction opposed to the 'horizontal section and corresponding in contour to that of the recess in the lower center portion ofy the vertical section oi the hanger member;
