UNITED STATES WALTER C. FAIN, OF NORFOLK, VIRGINIA.
CONCEALABLE FURNISHINGS.
Application filed August 3, 1925.
'ect to provide a table and benches adapted to e projected into position for use, but which when folded will lie within a shallow wall frame with their supporting parts completely concealed, presenting a pleasing exterior.
My invention also embodies certain minor details of construction, which hereinafter more definitely will be pointed out and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my im proved device, shown projected for use.
Figure 2 is a front elevation, on a smaller scale, showing the parts in folded position.
Figure 3 is an enlarged detail sectional view, taken on the line III-III of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is an enlarged detail sectional View, taken on the line IV-IV of Figure 2.
Figure 5 is an enlarged side elevation showing the table and one bench in projected position for use, the table top being shown partly in section.
Figure 6 is a detail sectional View, taken on the line VI-VI of Figure 1.
Figure 7 is a detail perspective view of one of the rear transverse brace irons for the table and benches.
Similar numerals of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views.
In the said drawings the reference numeral 1 denotes an open frame adapted to be fixed to the wall of an apartment, the same being divided by partition members 2 into a central space 3 for the reception of the table and two side spaces 4 for the reception of the benches. Said table embodies a top 5 having hinged thereto at its front a leg 6 adapted to fold thereunder, and also having hinged to its underside intermediate its length braces 7, said braces each being hinged at its other end to an iron 8 fixed to the bottom rail of the frame 1 as best seen in Figure 5. Disposed across t ie rear end of said table is an angle brace iron 9, the same extending the width of said table top, and fixed thereto on the underside of the table by means of a central screw passing through the screw aperture 10 therein, and also by set screws 11 passing through elongated slots 12 therein. Brazed or otherwise fixed to said plate are pintles 13 for a purpose hereinafter to be described. The function of the elongated slots 12 is to serial no. 47,955.
provide an adjustable connection between thc plate 9 and the table top, whereby any shrinkage of the wood in the table top will be taken care of without altering the length of the brace plate 9, and thereby changing the distance between the pintles 13. Said angle brace iron 9 also functions to prevent warping of the table top, and this is taken care of at the front of said table top by an insert 14 of wood, as shown in Figure 5.
The pintles 13 at the rea-r of the table top engage recesses formed in moldings 15 fixed to the front of the frame 1 around the spaces 3 and 4, whereby said pintles may have free vertical movement therein, but will be confined against detachment, as clearly seen in Figure 4.
I have provided a seat 16 upon each side of the table 5 each adapted to fold into one of the recesses 4 in the frame 1, each of said seats being provided with a front leg 17 hinged thereto and adapted to fold against the underside of the same as does the leg 6 against the table top 5, and with braces 18 hinged to the underside of said seat intermediate its length and at their other ends fixed to irons similar to the irons 8 of th-e table top brace 7. At its rear each seat has attached thereto an angle brace iron similarv in every respect to the angle brace iron 9 of the table top, and the pintles thereof are slidably connected to the frame 1 in identically the same manner as are the pintles 13 of said table top.
In operation, assuming the parts to be in the open position ,shown in Figure 1, in order to fold the same into position of non-use, the legs 6 and 17 of the table and benches are folded upwardly against the undersi-des of said table and benches, and the rear ends of the latter then are slid upwardly, being guided by the pintles 13 in the grooves in the frame 1, the result being that said table and benches will assume the position shown in Figure 2 filling the spaces 3 and 4 in the frame 1, and completely concealing the legs and diagonal brace rods between the same and the wall of the room, this position of the table being shown in ldetail in Figure 3.
It will be observed by reference to Figure 1 that my improved device is shown disposed in position beneath a window, and as the whole structure need be but four feet high, it readily can be understood that the same is adapted for this particular use beneath windows raised slightly above the normal, as is common in modern apartments. This enables the comparatively limited space beneath said Windows to be utilized in a novel manner.
Having thus fully .described my invention, what l claim as ner7 and desire to secure by Letters Pat-ent, iS:-
l. The combination with a foldable board, and a `jromfed support for the same, of a brace iron extending` continuously across the board and having` pintles at its ends projecting` laterally beyond the board and adapted to slide in said grooves, and means attaching said brace iron to one end of said board in such manner that ,sai d board may shrink and Xpand Without resistance from said brace iron.
2. The combination with a Foldable board, and a grooved support tor the same, of a brace iron having,` pintles at its ends adapted to slide in said groove, said iron being attached to one end of said board by a central lined means, and by laterally adjustable means, whereby said board may shrink and expand Without resistance from said brace iron.
3. rlhe combination With a foldable board, and a erooved support for the same, of an angled brace iron having pintles at its ends adapted to slide in said groove7 said iron hav-" ing; in one wing a central bolt aperture, and lateral elongated bolt receiving slots, Whereby the same may be attached to one end of leaid board to guide it in said grooves, said iron affording); a permanent sliding connection for said board and while preventing lateral warping, permitting endyvise shrinkage and expansion.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aitix my signature.
WALTER C. FAIN.
