. A. H. KRUSCHEL DISAPPEARING TABLE, IRONING BOARD, AND THE LIKE Filed March 15, 1923 Patented Sept. 8, 1925.
AUGUST H. KROSCHEL, OF LOS ANGELES CALIFORNIA.
DISAPPEARING TABLE, IRON ING BOARD, AND THE LIKE.
Application filed March 15, 1923.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUoUs'r H. KnosorrnL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angelcs and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Disappearing Tables, Ironing Boards, and the like, of which the. following is a specification.
My invention relates to disappearing furniture such as tables, ironing boards, and the like, and consists of the novel features herein shown, described and claimed.
An object of my invention is to mount the article of furniture upon a wall or partition so that the article will swing downwardly and form a part of the wall or partition when out of use.
Another object is to provide an improved mounting and support for the article of furniture.
Other objects and advantages will be made manifest in the following specification of an embodiment of the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a plan of the table board in extended position and broken away to uncover the folding brace.
Fig. 2 is a vertical elevation and section showing the board in extended position.
Fig. 3 is a perspective of jointed ends of the brace and latch thereof.
My invention is an improvement over the invention described in my co-pending application filed June 20, 1921, Serial Number 478,963.
The present invention relates to types of tables adapted to be unfolded from a vertical position in a wall W to a horizontal extending position projecting from the wall. The folding member may consist of an ironing board or a table board 2 or the like of suitable width and length and having guided sliding connection as by corner pins 3 bearing in channelled guide strips 4, provided in the sides of a. pocket in. the wall.
The pins 3 are shown as set inwardly to the rear and bottom of the board 2 so that the board will lie flush in the front plate of the wall W when the board is upright and the slots of the guides 4L terminate at the lower ends in such a position that when the table 2 is extended horizontally it will assume a convenient position to be used for ironing board or table purposes.
Serial No. 625,199.
To provide for the supporting of the board 2 in a horizontal position I provide a brace consisting of parallel bars 5 which are rigidly transversely connected by a cross piece 6 and are pivotally connected at 7 to a cleat 8 having down-turned ears 9 for the pivots. The cleat 8 is fastened near to the outer end and bottom of the board 2. The frame bars 5- are pivotally connected at 10 to a lower or inner frame consisting of side bars 11, which may be diagonally braced as at 12, and this frame, including the members 11 and a cross brace 13, is pivotally connected to a cleat 15 as by pivots 16. The cleat 15 is secured to the floor or other element in the bottom of the pocket in the wall, as shown in Figure 2. The pivotal connection 10 between the two frames is made somewhat forwardly of the cross piece 6 of the upper frame, including the members 5, and when the frames are brought into alignment as in Figure 2, the cross piece 6 will bear down upon the contiguous edges of the side bars 11 of the lower frame and thus forms a stop limiting the movement of the frames to their extended position.
The frame is fastened in extended relation by means including a spring latch 18 mounted in a box 19 carried by the cross piece 6. As the board 2 is extended from an upright to a horizontal position the braced frames swing from a folded position to an aligned position, as shown in Figure 2, and during the movement of the cross piece 6 down toward the end of the lower frame bars 11, the latch 18 snaps into looking engagement with the cross bar 13 and therefore locks the folding brace in effective position.
hen it is desired to restore the board to a vertical position the latch is retracted by pulling on a chain 20 connected thereto and extending up to a convenient position to be grasped.
From the above it will be seen that I have provided a simple and substantial form of ironing board or table structure and a fold-able brace therefor.
While I have shown a rectangular board suitable for use as a table, it is obvious that the board may be ofany desired form to be used as a table, ironing board, or the like.
Further embodiments, modifications and variations may be resorted to within the principle of the invention.
Vhat is claimed is:
1. In combination with a wall having slotted guides," a board member having pins engaging the slotted guides to provide for vertical movement, of the board thereat, a brace consisting of a lower frame section pivotally connected at its lower end to a support and an upper frame section pivotally connected to the swingingiend of the board member; the brace sections being pivotally connected and one of the sections carrying a part adapted to move into overlapping position therewith when the brace frames'are extended in alignment and when the board member is in horizontal position, and a spring actuated latching means for fastening the brace frames in alignment.
2. The combination with a wall having slotted guides and a board member having pins engaging the slotted guides to provide for vertical movement of the board, of a brace consisting of pa *allel bars rigidly transversely connected by a cross piece and pivotally connected to the board, a lower .inner frame formed of side bars diagonally braced, and fitting within the parallel bars and pivot-ally connected to the parallel bars some distance above their swinging ends and pivotally connected at their lower ends to a cleat secured to the floor, the cross piece of the parallel bars being adapted to bear down upon the lower side bars, a spring latch mounted in'a box'carried by the cross piece and adapted to snap into engagement with a cross bar connecting the upper ends of the side bars, and a chain for retracting the latch.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to i this specification;
'A. H. KROSCHEL.
