COMBINATION BABY-CRIB A NID CRADLE.

Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed November 26, 1920. Serial No. 425,465.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE W. STULoK. a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Baby-Cribs and Cradles, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad to the accompan ing drawings.

This invention re ates to improvements in cribs.

An important object of the invention. is to provide a device of this character which is capable of use either as a crib or cradle as may be desired.

A further object of the invention is to provide in a device of this character means whereby the handling of the baby within the crib is greatly facilitated as is also the handling and changing of the bed clothes of the crib.

A further object is to provide a device of this character embodying drawers which may be employed for containing the bed clothes which may be utilized on the crib and which may be moved to the open position from either side of the crib to move the contents thereof, or which may not be accidentally pushed from oneside to the open position at the opposite side of the crib.

A still further object is to provide in a crib of this character a concealed stairway by means of which as the child grows older he may mount to the crib unassisted, the.

stairs of the crib being completely concealed within the device and, accordingly, not in terfering with the shifting thereof from place to place.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent throughout the course of the following description.

In the accompanying drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention and wherein like reference characters designate like parts throughout Figure 1 is a plan view of a crib constructed in accordance with my invention;

To these top cross bars is pivotally connected, as at 13, a cradle structure 14 embodying a frame work composed of upper and lower rectangular frames 15 connected by vertical uprights 16 at the corners and ends thereof.

The lower framework 15 supports the usual spring 17. To oneside member of the upper framework are ivotally connected a top 18 and one comp ete side 19 of the crib so that the top and side may be moved to open positions, in which positions they are held b the usual supporting braces 20. At the ot er side of the crib the vertical members 16 are connected by a transverse member 21 extending longitudinally of the side of the crib approximately centrally thereof and to this transverse member is ivotally connected a door 22 which may e swung downwardly to the open position. It is to be noticed that when the top is in the open position and the door 22 swung the crib may be arranged beside the bed with the side bearing the door 19 disposed toward the bed and this door moved to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4,

' the door overhanging the bed. It will be cillated when desired. Means are provided for locking the receptacle against oscillation, which means are more clearly shown in Figs. 3, 9 and 10. As disclosed, the end postsv are connected at the sides of the crib below the receptacle by a longi- 'tudinally extending brace member 23 to which are pivotally connected the lower ends of a pair of locking members 24. These locking members each comprise a pair of spaced fiat portions 25 rigidly connected to one another at one side thereof by a connecting member 26. As shown in Fig. 3, the locking members may be elevated to engage the side bars of the lower rectangus lar frame 15 of the receptacle to prevent oscillation thereof. When not in use these locking members are folded downwardly until the connecting members 26 thereof engage against the upper surface of the longitudinal supports 23, presenting when in the folded position an extremely neat appearance. I

A partition 27 has its ends engaged in the upper transverse supporting member 11 and its sides engage in the longitudinally extending supporting members 23. Below the supports 23 and parallel thereto at each 1 side of the crib are lower longitudinal supports 28. Extending intermediate the supports 28 and transversely of the crib structure at each end thereof, are pairs of guides 29 upon which are slidably mounted drawers 30, which drawers are provided centrally with a partition 31, dividing the drawer into two compartments and which drawers are provided at each'end with an end member or outer facing member 32, which end member 32 is provided with a latch 33, the bolt of which projects downwardly into the keeper 34 secured to the'lower support 28. Each lower support is provided with a slot 35 alining with the bolts of the latches 33, these slots being protected by metallic sheets 36.

An inspection of Fig. 5 in connection with the foregoing will render obvious the fact that by releasing the bolt at either end of the drawer from its keeper the drawer may be drawn out for the removal of its contents, but'that-the door may not be pushed out at the opposite side of the crib by pushing upon either of the end members 32. This mountingof the drawer greatliy facilitates the handling of the crib an often prevents the necessity of moving from one side to the other thereof to obtain clothing for use upon the crib.

Formed intermediate the drawers 30 is a step compartment 37 embodying transverse members 38, each provided on the upper face thereof with an angle iron guide 39. Intermediate the transverse members 38 is disposed a slide plate 40 having formed therein a groove 41 closed at one end-with which coacts the enlarged head 42 which is pivotally connected to the flight of steps 43 adjacent the upper end thereof. This flight of steps is composed of angle iron side members 44 having secured thereto step supports 45 of any desired construction. which supports form an attaching medium for the treads 46 of the steps. The upper ends of the angle irons 44 are formed with hook portions 47 for coaction with notches 48 formed in the partition member 27 to permitthe angular portions to engage against the side member 23, and the lower ends of the angle iron supports are provided with caster wheels 49. The ends of the compartment are provided with doors 50. one of which has an angular portion 51 formed on its inner face which is connected solidly to the crib construction by means of a pair of connecting links 52. en the door is opened, these links limit the pivotal movement thereof and when the steps are slid outwardly, and shifted about their pivot, the under faces of the angle irons engage against the angular portions 51 of the doors 50 and are supported thereby. The pivotal movement of the steps likewise brings the angular portions 47 of the angular irons 44 into engagement with the side member 23, as hereinbefore set forth. The other door 50 provides an opening permitting insertion and removal of steps when desired.

The end posts 10 are preferably provided at their lower ends with caster wheels 53 of any desired construction. In the present instance, I have shown the stirrups 54 of the wheels as being secured upon the ends of vertical bolts 55 mounted in the lower ends of the post 10. The upper ends of the bolts 55 extend into a cavity 56 formed in the post ,without departing from the spirit of my invention. I, accordingly, do not limit myself to the specific structure as hereinbefore set forth, except as so limited by the subjoined claims.

What I claim is 1. In a baby crib, end members, a receptacle supported thereby, vertically spaced longitudinally extending supports connecting the end members beneath said receptacle, transverse members mounted upon the lowermost of said longitudinally extendingsupports and forming drawer guides, drawers slidably mounted within said guides and extending to the opposite sides of the crib structure, said drawers being provided at each end thereof with a latch, keepers carried by said lower longitudinally extending brace members with which the bolts of said latches engage, and slots formed in said braces and alining with said bolts.

2. In a baby crib, end members, a receptacle supported thereby, a storage compartment formed beneath the receptacle and extending transversely of the crib, said storage compartment being provided at one end thereof with a pivotal door, a flight of steps mounted within said compartment and having interlocking and pivotal engagement therewith whereby said steps may be shifted through the opening normally closed by said door and swung to engage one end thereof with the floor and means limiting the pivotal movement of said door whereby said door engages the steps when the steps are in engagement with the floor, to support the upper end thereof.

3. In a baby crib, a compartment, a slide formed within the compartment, a member having interlocking engagement with the slide and a flight of steps pivotally connected with said member, said steps belng provided in the upper end thereof with hook portions and a socket formed in said oompartment with which said hook portions engage when the steps are swung about the pivot thereof.

4. In a baby crib, a compartment, a slide formed within the compartment, a member having interlocking engagement with the slide, a flight of steps pivotally connected with said member, said steps being provided in the upper end thereof with book portions, said compartment having a socket formed therein in which said hook portions engage when the steps are swung about the pivot thereof to the operative position, a pivoted door for closing said compartment, and means limiting the pivotal movement of said door whereby said door engages the steps when in the operative position to support the same.
