Patented Apr. 6, 1920.
Application filed November 29, 1918. Serial No. 264,604,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. KNIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oxford, in the county of Lafayette and State of Mississippi, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combination Babies Beds, (.radles, and Wardrobes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention comprehends generally improvements in that class of inventions known as beds and more particularly relates to a combination babys bed, cradle and wardrobe. 7
The invention has for its principal aim and object to provlde a device of the abovementioned character designed so as to provide a A swinging cradle capable of being locked in a stationary position in the main frame or else removed to permit of the extending of parts of the main frame to provide a bed or play pit, the main frame being incidentally designed to form a wardor accommodatin the infants clothes. More Iparticularly t e present invention contemp ates the provision of a device of the above mentioned character wherein the main frameis of novel construction and is particularly designed so as to effectively swingably support the cradle element which when removed permits of the extending of the auxiliary side ends of the main frame to provide a crib or pla pit, the construction and arrangement 0 the auxiliary sides being such that they may be y collapsed into a compact cradle is in position sons to not interfere with the swinging of the ame.
The invention has for an additional object to provide a device of the above mentioned c aracter wherein the cradle element is of novel construction being provided with reticulated end sections and a removable reticulated hood d so that they may be readily disassemb ed and folded to lie within the body of the occupy only a minimum amount when it is not desired to use the same.
It is a'more specific object of this invention to provide a device of the above mentioned character wherein improved means employed for removably and swingably supporting the cradle element in the main frame; and "to also provide cooperative of space position when the cradle in the main.
cradle element to means on the cradle element and on the main frame for holding the cradle against swinglug movement.
t is an additional object of,this invention to provide a device of the above mentioned character which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and efficient in its purpose and inex nsive in manufacture.
Other objects Wlll be in art obvious and in art hereinafter set forth.
he invention accordin ly consists in the features of construction, t e combination of elements and the arrangement of parts which will be am lified in the construction hereinafter descri application of which will be in lcated in the appended claims.
The, invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

' Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now, more particularly, to the accompan ng drawings there is provided a mam rame comprising relatively high end pieces generally designated by the numerals 1 and 2 the upper portions of which are provided with o enings 3 while the lower portions 4 are soli and are joined by main side pieces 5 while both the side pieces and the solid portions of the and pieces support a platform 6. To provide the wardrobe for accommodating the clothes of a baby the main side pieces 5 are provided withopenings 6' in which are mounted drawers 7 adjusted by knobs 8. In order to brace the frame and support the draweis a cross bar 9 is connected between the main side pieces 5 while a guide 10 is connected to this cross bar and cooperates with the combined guides and drawer supports 11 on the inner faces of the solid portions 4 of the end pieces for insuring of an easy opening and closing of the drawers. Rollers 12 of a conventional construction are connected to the bottom of the frame for facilitating the movement of the same about the floor. Auxiliary end pieces 13 are now employed and are preferably pivoted by means of hinges 14 to the upper surface of the platform 6 near the respective ends thereof while auxiliary side pieces 15 are swingably connected by means of hinges 16 to the inner surfaces of the main side pieces 5 near the upper edges thereof. The auxiliary end pieces 13 are designed so that they may be folded against the platform while the auxiliary side pieces 15 may be folded upon the auxiliary end pieces so that they lie in a compact position beneath the plane of the up er edges of the main side pieces or else t y may swing upwardly into an extended position to provide a crib or playpit. Eyes 17 are connected to the inner surfaces of the auxiliary side pieces 15 near the ends thereof and are removably engageable by books 18 swingably connected to the inner surfaces of the auxiliary end pieces 13 and designed for engagement with the hooks to lock the auxiliary side and end pieces in. an extended position. By this construction it is ap parent that a spring and mattress of conventional design are adapted to be arranged on the top of the auxiliary side and end pieces whenthe latter are collapsed or folded to provide a bed or else arranged upon the platform when the auxiliary side and end pieces are extended thus providing a. crib or bed or play pit, as desired.
As intimated, an improved cradle has' been employed and consists of a body 19 of a substantially rectangular configuration comprising a base 20, side walls 21 and end walls 22. Reticulated end sections generally designated by the numeral 23 are now employed and each consists of a rectangular open frame 24 covered with screen 25 and these end sections are swiugably connected as by hinges 2G to the upper edges of the end walls 22 of the body. A brace bar 27 is now employed while hooks 28 are connected to the undersurfaces thereof near the respective ends and are designed for engagement with sockets 29 carried by the inner faces of the end sections 23 being designed to maintain the end sections extended. It is to be noted that the upper surface of the brace bar lies beneath the plane of the upper of the end sections. A hood generally designated by the numeral 30 is now employed and consists of a sectional top and sides. The sectional top is composed of open rectangular sections or frames 31 covered with pieces of screen 32 and are swingably connected together by hinges 33 while to the outer m'dc edges of these sections 31 are hinged the open rectangular sides or frames 34 of the top. Like the sections 31 these sections 34 are covered with pieces of screen 35. In applying the hood the meeting edges of the middle sections are designed to rest on the brace bar 27 while the sides 34 are swings le downwardly to rest on the upper edges of the side walls 21 of the body and bear against vertical bracing strips 36 carried by the inner faces of the end sections 23. Handles 37 are connected to the lower edges of the sides 34 to facilitate thereof. By the construction shown it is apparent that either side of the hood may be conveniently raised so that the baby may be placed within the body which, of course, is adapted to receive a spring and mattress of conventional de- I h order to swingahly and removably mount the cradle on the frame, hangers 38 have their lower ends pivot-11y connectednear the lower corners of the end walls 22 of the cradle by means of suitable pivots 39 while the upper ends are formed with openin' 40 and slots 41. Head pivots 42 project from the inner faces of the upper portions of the main and piecesl and2oftheframeandareopposed to each other. The openings 40 in the hangers are designed to be placed over the headed pivots 42 so that the slots 41 ml the shanks of the pivots 4-2 an in this manner swingably support the cradle on the frame. When connected in the manner described the under surface of the cradle is arranged in close proximity to the u per edges of the main side pieces 5 while ends of the cradle are slightly spaced from the upby means of the openings 40 it is apparent that the hangers and consequently the cradle may be disengaged. With a view toward providing an improved menus for locking the cradle against movement when mounted in the frame catches generally designated by the numeral 43 project from the end walls 22 of the cradle and each catch consists ofa horizontally disposed base portion 3 formed medially of its upper surface with-a vertical wing 44. Keeper bars are swingably connected to the lower edges of the openings 3 in the end pieces 1 and2 bymeans of hinges -16 and are dsigncd to be swung 115 P portions of the main and piece 1 and 2 catches 48 in such a manner that the base portions 43' of the catches serve to support the keeper bars when swung inwardly. Of course, when it is desired to swing the cradle the keeper bars are swung u wardly so as to rest on the lower edges 0 the openings 3 and be out ofthe path of movement of the cradle.
It is apparent that when the cradle is locked the same may be used in the nature of a crib or bed while the hood serves as a protector for the baby within the crib by preventing flies, etc, from bothering the baby.
When it is not desired to use the cradle the hood may be lifted upwardly while the sections of the top may be folded together and also folded in close relation with respect to the side sections and placed within the body of the cradle. The brace bar 27 may also be removed from position by disengagin the hooks from the sockets and placed within the bod whereupon the end sections 23 may be fol ed inwardly to engage the upper edges of the side wallsof the body 19 of the cradle, it being understood, of course, that the hood when folded lies beneath the plane of the upper edges of the side walls 21. The hangers, of course, may be disengaged from the pivots 42 and swung into close relationwith the sides of the end walls of the body. It will thus be seen that the cradle may be folded to occupy a minimum amount of space when it is not desired to use the same. i
It is believed in view of the foregoing description that a further detailed description of t e operation of the invention is entirely unnecessary. Likewise it is believed that the advantages of the invention will be readily ap arent.
