This invention relates to novel and useful improvements in hinge structures.
An object of this invention is to swingingly mount a movable object with respect to a stationary member such as a wash basin with respect to its housing by means of an improved hinge which provides the feature of removability of the object with respect to the support, that is, the basin with respect to the housing.
Another object of this invention is to removably mount an object with respect to its relatively stationary support by means of a bar which is fixed to a hinge leaf, the bar having a pair of substantially parallel rods extending therefrom removably disposed in sockets which are formed in the stationary member, the other leaf of the hinge having the object, whatever it may be, fixed thereto.
Other objects and features will become apparent in following the description of the preferred form of the invention, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a top view of one form of the invention applied to a suggested stationary and movable element;
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 22 of Figure 1 and in the direction of the arrows;
Figure 3 is an enlarged sectional detail of construction showing a portion of the improved hinge structure and mount; and
Figure 4 is an exploded perspective view of one corner of the hinge structure and a suggested socket-forming member.
Briefly summarized, it will be seen that the subject matter herein under consideration is directed primarily to a hinge, more specifically a so-called elongate piano-type hinge characterized by hingedly connected leaves, one of which is fiat and attachable to the swingable part and the other of which is channel-shaped and fixed to a foundation or stationary part. The channelshaped leaf is anchored through the medium of adapter means including a horizontal bar which is fitted into the channel and which bar is provided at its opposite ends with depending pins or rods which fit telescopically but non-rotatably in socket members aflixed to the relatively stationary support means. The adapter means, therefore, may be lifted up and detached from the support means.
The present invention relates to improvements in hinge structures and means for mounting the hinge structure so that the object which is hinged with respect to the relatively stationary member may be removed very easily and conveniently. As a suggested use of the invention, a basin together with its housing, generally indicated at [0, is illustrated, the basin being indicated generally at I2. be employed in trailers of the house type, Full-- man cars, and many other places. Other objects may be hingedly connected together by the improved hinge structure, such as bins em-' ployed in stock rooms, grocery stores, ofiices, and other places. The field of utility of the hingeis left within the prerogative of the purchaser andmanufacturer.
The housing ID has a drain M at the bottom thereof together with a bumper l6 at the top thereof and a latch keeper l8. The basin I2 is disposed in a case 20 and the case is adapted to be swung inwardly and outwardly, toward and away from the housing [0, whereby the conventional latch 22 is fixed within the latch keeper I8, and whereby the appropriate edge of the basin or case is adapted to engage the bumper It to hold it firmly within the housing.
Forming a part of the housing I0 is a channelshaped member 28 extending transversely of the housing and on the front surface thereof. This channel-shaped member 28 forms a recess wherein socket members 30 are fixed. The sockets 32 which may be formed by the socket members 30 or by any other suitable means accommo date a pair of spaced, substantially parallel rods 34. It will be noted that the socket 32 may be made by true sleeves or by various other expedients.
The rods 34 are fixed to a bar 36, from which they extend in substantially perpendicular relationship. They may be formed integral, as disclosed in Figure 3, or welded or screwed or riveted, or otherwise fixed thereto.
The bar 36 has a strip 38 fixed to the top thereof, which strip has the substantially channelshaped leaf 40 secured thereto as by the countersunk screws 42. The hinge pin 44 passes through the bights of the leaf 40 and also through the bights of the leaf 46. The basin case 20 is provided with a substantially fiat portion 48 which is secured to the hinge leaf 46, whereby the basin case 20 together with its basin l2 may be swung about the hinge pin 44 as an axis. Since the leg 50 of the channel-shaped leaf 40 is perpendicular to the leaf 46 when the part 48 of the case 20 is horizontal, the desired position for supporting the basin is attained. Accordingly, a stop condition exists when binding of the hinge takes place in this position.
In order to remove the basin I2 together with its case 20 from the housing I, it is only neces- This type of basin may sary to lift the basin and thereby slide the rods 34 from their sockets 32. When it is not desired to remove the basin but rather close it within the housing, the fact that the latch 22 is disposed in its latch keeper in the locking condition prevents any upward movement of the rod 34 (substantial movement) whereby the basin and its case 20 are locked firmly in position and cannot inadvertently be removed.
It is apparent that variations may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention. Accordingly, limitation is sought only in accordance with the scope of the following claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. In combination, stationary sl pportmeans, a pair of complemental vertically disposed socket members fixed in longitudinally spaced coplanarrelationship on said support means, an elongate r zonta ada e bar pa n g the sp c tween said socket. members andhaving end portions resting removably atop the, upper ends. of. saidmembers, saidend portions having right angularly disposed depending rods aflixed, thereto and telescoping slidably but non-rotatably. into said socket members, and leaf, hinge means embodying a. pair of companion leaves hingedly Joined to each other, said leaves being commensurate in length with said bar and one of said leaves being aflixed to said. bar, whereby. said bar and hinge means may be lifted up, as a unitary, assemblage, and detached from said socketmembers.
2. The structure defined in claim 1, wherein said bar is rectangular in cross-section and said one leaf is channel-shaped in cross-section and is fitted over and substantially embraces said bar.
3. In combination, elongated hinge means embodying a first fiat leaf and second leaf, the latter being channel-shaped in cross-section, the free longitudinal edge of one wall of said channel being hingedly joined with a cooperating longitudinal edge of said fiat leaf, and; means for operatively joining said hinge means, as a unit, to a stationary support comprising an adapter bar fitted and secured in the channel of said channelshapedj leaf, said bar being commensurate in length with the length of said latter leaf, said bar having right angularly disposed hold-down rods afiixed to its respective end portions, and socket members adapted to be attached to fixed support means, said rods fitting slidably but nonrotatably into said socket members.
