(Cl. 297-443) This invention relates to knockdown frames for upholstered type furniture.
It is therefore a primary object of this invention to provide a frame for upholstered furniture which may be readily assembled from pieces which may be manufactured with greater ease and thereby also facilitate shipping and storage of the frames in disassembled condition.
Another object of this invention in accordance with the foregoing object, is toprovide a furniture frame which is formed by the assembly of component frames fitted together to form an accurate and rigid frame assembly.
In accordance with the foregoing objects, this invention may be applied to the assembly of an upholstered chair frame formed from a back frame, a seat base frame, two sidearm frames all of which are locked in assembled position by means of four legs which extend through interlocking projections on the base seat frame and are secured to the bottoms of the sidearm frames.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:

Referring now to the drawing in detail, all of the components which make-up an upholstered seat in accordance with the principles of this invention are shown in FlGURE 1, wherein reference numeral lit) designates the back of the seat, 12 designates the base seat portion, 14 indicates the sidearms while 16 designates each of the egs thereof.
As more clearly seen in FIGURE 4, the frame for the back of the upholstered piece is made-up of a pair of side members it which are interconnected at the top by a top member 2ft which overlaps the side members 18 by a small amount. The fronts of the side members 13 are interconnected by a front member 22 below which a recess portion 24 is formed within each of the side members 1% for receiving the base seat portion as will hereafter become apparent. The rear portions of the side members 18 are interconnected by rear bracing member 26. Adjacent the top portion of the side members "'18 there is disposed upper side members 28 which are spaced from the side members by means of spacing members 34) and 32 which form therebetween a space 34 for purposes as will hereafter be explained. The upper side members 23 are also spaced from the side members 18 ice by means of the overlapping portions of the top member 2%. Also, disposed at the rear bottom portion of the side members 18 are slots 36 as shown dotted in FIG- URE 4.
Referring now to FIGURE 4 again, the sidearm frame assemblies 14 include a top member 33 attached to a pair of vertical front and rear members 40 and 42 which are also interconnected by a bottom member 44. The side arm frame 14 is further braced by a horizontal brace member 46, the front face of which is flush with the ront edges of the front and rear members 40 and 42. As seen in FiGURE 7 the rear side member 42 of the sidearm frame assembly 14 has connected thereto at a lower end thereof a pin or dowel 48 while: the bottom member 44 has cut therein a pair of recesses or slots 5%) and 52, the pins 48 and recesses 54 and 52 being provided for purposes as will hereafter become apparent. Also, as seen in FlGURES 2, 3, 4 and 5, a pro ection member 54 is connected to the top member 38 and the brace member 46 or tile side arm frame 14, said member 54 projecting upwardly beyond the top of the top member 33 for purposes as will become hereafter apparent. Also disposed Within the bottom member 44 of the sidearm frames 14 from the top surfaces thereof are nut receiving recesses 56 as will be more dearly seen in FIGURE 5. The out receiving recesses are interconnected with the slot portions 5t; and 52 by means of holes 58 as will also be more clearly seen in FIGURE 5.
Referring now to FlGURES 5 and 8, the frame for the base seat 12 is formed by a Pair of side members 60 which are interconnected at a rear end by means of a rear member 6L having projecting portions 64 extending laterally tnereoeyond while the front portions of the side members 619 are interconnected by a member 66 similar to member 6.2 and also having projecting portions 68 similar to projecting portions e4. Apertures 70 are disposed witmn the pro ecting portions s4 and 68 for purposes as will hereafter become apparent. Also an intermediate bracing member 72 is provided between the side members 6%? and also a from member 74 interconnects said side members. As will be apparent from FlGURES 2 and 5, the side members 63 of the base seat frame slope downwardly from the front toward the rear portion thereof for the obvious purpose of forming a rearwardly downwardly sloping top seat portion for the upholstered chair.
As will be seen in FIGURES 2 and 3, each of the legs 16 which may be of various shapes and sizes or designs, has connected thereto at its top a screw member 76 which may be threadedly engaged with a nut member 78 as will be more clearly seen in FIGURE 3.
Referring now to FIGURES 3, 4, 5 and 6, the assembly of the sidearm frames 14 with the back frame ill will become apparent. The sidearm frames 14 have their rear portions assembled against the lower side of the side members if) of the back frame 10 and are moved upwardly with respect thereto so that the pin 43 is aligned within the slot 36 as seen in FiGURE 6, while the projecting member 54 is received Within the space 34 formed between the spacing members 3% and 32 as more clearly seen in FEGURES 3 and 5. Accordingly, the side frames 14 are assembled against the side members 18 of the back frame it) beneath the exposed upper side members 23, with the interlocking projections 48 and 54 being hidden within the back frame 1% while the use of the two interlocking projections prevents any angular displacement between the sidearm frames and the back frame. Therefore, the sidearm frames 14 may be assembled with the back frame ill so as to prevent any horizontal or angular disassembly therebetween. It will therefore be apparent that in order to assemble the sidearm frames 14 with the back frame, it will be necessary to merely lower the back frame it} down between the side arm frame with the slots 36 and 34 being aligned with the projections 48 and 54 respectively.
The assembled sidearm and back frames may be assembled with the base seat frame by lowering over the base seat frame as shown in FIGURE 5 wherein the recesses 5'0 and 52 in the bottom members 44; of the sidearm frames 14 are in alignment with the projections 64 and 6'8 of the seat frame while the recess portions 24 of the back frame side members .18 are in alignment with the rear top corner portion of the seat frame so that the seat frame may be assembled with the other components as shown in FIGURE 2. As also shown in FIGURE 3 wherein the sidearm, back and seat frames are assembled, it will be observed that the aperture '70 within the projection 64 of the seat frame is in alignment with the aperture 58 within the bottom member 44 of the sidearm frame. Accordingly, as seen in FIGURE 3, the legs 16 may be assembled to the bottom of the projecting portion 64 of the seat frame by insertion of the screw member '76 through aperture 7t? and through aperture 53 whereby the leg and screw member 76 may be rigidly attached to the bottom member 4 of the sidearm frame 14 by means of the nut member 78 being threadedly engaged with screw member 76 and fitting within the recess 5'6. It will therefore be apparent, that the legs are not only attached to the seat frame and sidearm frames but also lock the whole assembly together.
From the foregoing description, assembly of the various components and their manufacture will be apparent. It should be appreciated therefore, that the entire frame is tied together by means of the legs in a most efficient manner and with the requisite rigidity in order to hold the entire frame assembly in assembled position. It will also be noted that the back frame 10 can only be disassembled from the sidearm frames 14 by relative movement thereof in an upward direction which is unlikely for such a relatively heavy piece and will overlie the rear portion of the seat frame to give a neat appearance when the upholstered pieces are assembled. Also, when so assembled the back portion M will be incapable of being angularly displaced relative to the seat because of its double interlocking arrangement with the sidearm portions 14. Furthermore, as was hereinabove explained the sidearm portions 14 will be rigidly attached to the seat portion by means of the legs. It will be also noted that all of the interlocking projections are rigid extensions or integral extensions of the frame forming each of the components so that the assembly is more secure.
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
A knockdown frame assembly for furniture comprising a back frame having sides against which sidearm frames are assembled, upper exposed side members connected to said back frame sides and spaced therefrom by spacing members forming downwardly opening slots therebetween, downwardly opening slot means formed at bottom ends of said back frame sides, vertical projections and pins connected to said side frames received within said slots and slot means respectively, a base frame assembled within recess portions of said back frame sides, a pair of outwardly extending horizontal projections connected to each end of said base frame at its bottom, said latter projections being received within recesses formed within bottom members of said sidearm frames and a plurality of legs each having an upwardly extending screw member attached thereto which extends through one of said horizontal projections and are threadedly engaged with said bottom members of the sidearm frames.
