Description

AXE WITH DETACHABLE BLADE Filed Jan. 3, 1946 Patented Mar. 7, 1950 UNITED STATE 2,499,345 AX WITH DETACHABLE BLADE Epps Joseph Adams, Augusta, Ga. Application January 3, 1946, Serial No. 638,727
1 Claim. 1
My invention appertains to an axe construction in which the head into which the handle is inserted, and the blade are separable and preferably of difierent material; that is, the head may be made of soft or cheaper grade of iron, while the blade is made of tool steel with an edge which is suitable for taking a certain amount of hardening and grinding.
The following advantages of this construction should be noted.
The axe head into which the axe handle is attached in the usual manner should practically last indefinitely, provided that a reasonable amount of care is used to protect it from rusting, bending or breaking.
The blade, made of costlier material, is very durable as regards wear, and keeps its edge and sharpness without regrinding for a considerable time. Being of small size, as compared with the entire axe, it can be manufactured cheaply.
When one blade has been worn out, the securing of a new blade to an old head, needing no fitting, as all parts would be standard, is equivalent to obtaining a brand new axe at a considerably reduced price.
Other advantages will occur from reading the following description with the attached drawing.
One embodiment of the invention is illustrated on the drawing in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the axe assembled with a portion of the handle.
Figure 2 is a section along line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a side elevation of the axe-head alone.
Figure 4 is a vertical section along line 4-4 of Figure 3, slightly enlarged.
Figure 5 is a side elevation of the axe-blade alone.
Figure 6 is a vertical section taken alon line 6-45 of Figure 5.
In the drawing, like reference numerals denote like details in the different views.
The head of the axe is denoted by numeral l having a hole l2 therethrough to accommodate a conventional axe-handle i I. At the lower end of the head which is slightly more than half the length of an ordinary axe, a blade i3 is firmly secured. When assembled together, the head l0 and the blade l3 have a smooth taper from the fiat top 14 down to the sharp edge E of the blade I3. A mortice cut I6 is formed therein by an inclined cut surface ll which slants from an undercut edge l8. on the right side, as seen in Figure 2, down to a similar edge l9 on the left 2 side of the axe. This mortice cut I6 tapers upwardly from the bottom edge 19 of the axe head to the top edge I8 thereof.
The blade 13 has a correspondingly tapered tongue 29 made to fit tightly in the mortice cut [6 in the axe-head. After wedging in the blade [3 firmly in the mortice IE it is additionally fastened by a transverse screw 2|, which is threaded as at 22 in the heavy middle part of the axe. This screw 2| has preferably a beveled head which is countersunk as at 22 in the blade, which is not threaded.
After the head and blade are thus assembled, the side faces should be ground and the edge l5 sharpened.
It is to be understood that the invention as here disclosed is not limited to the details here described and shown but that the same may be varied without departing from the spirit of the invention as defined by the subjoined claim.
I claim:
An axe having a detachable blade and comprising a head having side faces and first and second end portions, a cut-out in one side face of the head and at the second end of the head, said cut-out including an inclined bottom surface sloping from one side face of the head to the other side face of the head, said cut-out also including a pair of side walls diverging toward the second end of said head, the side walls of said cut-out being dovetailed, said blade having a tongue, said tongue being wedge-shaped in two planes at right angles to each other, said tongue fitting tightly in said cut-out and including a pair of converging dovetailed side edges contacting the side walls of said cut-out.
EPPS JOSEPH ADAMS.
