UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM STRATTON THOMSON,- OF PLANTSVILLE, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOB TO THE TOIBRIN TOOL COMPANY, OF PLANTSVILLEY CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION.
GOLD c'n'rs'n'n Application filed October 18, 1923. Serial No. 669,413.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WVILLIAM'S. THOMSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Plantsville, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cold Chisels, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in cold chisels, of the form that is forged from stock in the form of a bar of material of circular form of cross-section and comprises an elongated blade of wedge-shape that merges with a handle having a polygonal form of cross-section, and the object of my improvement is to produce a form of structure in which the blade is nicely finished and polished from end to end and the handle is in the rough 'and wherein the finishing operations on the blade may be performed substantially without any liability of encroaching upon the exposed faces of the handle, particularly at the junction of the blade and handle, where they merge, the result being attained by reason of a suitable reduction in the size or diameter of the cross section of the handle relatively tothe portion of the blade at or adjacent said junction.
In the accompanying drawing:-
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a cold chisel embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the same.
Figure 3 is an end elevation of the same as viewed from the butt.
Figure 4 is an end elevation as viewed from the bit.
My improved cold chisel comprises an elongated handle that terminates at the rear end 11 in the form of a butt of conical form and at the front end merges with the blade 12, the latter terminating in the form of the cutting edge or bit 13.
The body portion of the handle 10 is of octagonal form of cross-section.
The blade 12 is Wedge-shaped as defined by the inclined top and bottom faces 14.
As to width the blade 12 is, as shown, of uniform width from end to end, as defined by the faces 15. As to further details for the blade 12, the outer end portion, adjacent the bit 13, isof rectangular form of crosssection, and is designatedby the character 16. As the blade 12 extends inwardly from the outer portion 16 and increases in thick ness there appear triangular corner faces 18 and the rear portion 17 is of octagonal form, being bound by said corner faces 18 intermediate the top and bottom fiat faces 14 and the adjacent side faces in each case, or at each corner. At the large end, at the junction 19 of the blade 12 and the handle 10, the octagonal form of cross-section mentioned is substantially equi-lateral.
The tool is straight, the handle 10 and blade 12 being extended along a common straight axis. I
The invention resides in the particular structure that is provided at and adjacent the junction 19 of the blade 12 and the handle 10, whereby the faces mentioned provided on the blade can be freely operated upon for polishing and finishing in any manner desired, having in mind the usual operations for effecting this result, as by the use of grinding and polishing wheels and belts.
The expedient utilized for effecting the result mentioned comprises a reduction in size of the portion of the handle adjacent and merging with the blade at the junction 19. Such reduction could in some instances be made local, with the body portion of the handle of what may be designated full size.
In the present instance, as shown, the handle 10 is made of uniform size, the crosssect-ion being slightly though appreciably smaller than that at the rear end or what may be designated as the butt-end of the blade 12, and denoted by the character 19 at the junction as has been described. Thus just at the rear of the junction line 19 there is an inclined wall structure 21 that bounds the material that fills in the corners between the individual faces 22 of the octagonal handle 10 and the adjacent and opposed edges of the faces 14, 18, and 15 that define the adjacent relatively large butt end portion or rear end portion 23 of the blade 12.
The structure described provides positive clearance space between extensions of any and all of the faces that bound the blade andthe faces that bound the handle.
I claim as my invention 1. A cold chisel having a handle and a blade merged one with the other, said handle being in the rough, said blade being finished on all sides and faces, and the portion of said blade at-the junction with the handle being larger, on all sides than the handle in the diame ral d me sions, Where by the finishing of the blade is facilitated Without encroachment upon the handle.
2. A cold chisel comprising a blade of tapered form and a handle projected from end of said blade, and said handle being in the form of a structure that is reduced on all sides relatively to the part of the blade to which it is connected.
8. A cold chisel comprising in a one piece structure a blade of tapered form that is merged by its large end with a handle body, said large end and said handle body being each of octagonal form of cross-section, and said handle body being of reduced diametral dimensions relatively to said large end.
