DAVID C. BAUGHMAN, OF ALBION, INDIANA.
SELF-EXT INGUISHING LAMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 249,874, dated November 22, 1881.
Application filed September 13, 1881. (Model.)
To all whom it may concern:
BeitknownthatI, DAVID C. BAUGHMAN, of Albion,in the county ofNoble, and in the State of Indiana, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Self-Extinguishing Lamps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exactdescription thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawin gs, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in that class of self or automatically extinguishing lamps in which the flame is extinguished at an appointed time by suitable mechanism operated by means of a float in the oil-reservoir, which falls as the oil or burning fluid is consumed and throws or permits the extinguisher to fall over the wick.
The object of the present invention is to simplify the construction of such extinguishers, to dispense with the use of springs, and pro vide a more efficient and reliable device for the purpose than heretofore. These objects I attain by the apparatus and devices illustrated in the accompanyingdrawings, in which Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved lamp with a portion of the wall of the reservoir or fount broken away, showing the float therein. Fig. 2 represents a top view of the burner and extinguishing devices, and Fig. 3 represents a detached view of one of the extinguishingshields. Fig. 4 represents a detached view ofthe burner, showingthe extinguishing-wings fully separated, in which such wings are represented as curved, being a modification of my invention; and Fig. 5 indicates a vertical sectional view taken on the line m w of Fig. 1.
The letter A indicates the body or reservoir of the lamp, which may be of the ordinary or any approved construction.
B indicates the burner, which is provided with the usual wick-tube, (J.
The letter D indicates the cone or deflector, which is seated on the burner-cap in such position as to fall properly over the wick of the lamp, as usual.
The letters E E indicate two wings or shields,
' which are located one at each side of the wicktube, and which are secured to the rods F F,
journaled in suitable bearings in the burner.
The said rods at one sideproject beyond their bearings and are bent at right angles, as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings. The rod F from its horizontal bend is bent vertically downward, as indicated by the letter Gr, Fig. 3, the vertical portion being provided with a series of graduations, H, for the purpose hereinafter described.
The letter I indicates a float located in the reservoir of the lamp and attached to a rod,I, extending through a packed opening, K, at the top of the lamp. The said rod is beveled atits upper end, and is adapted to bear against the vertical portion of the rod F, so as to separate the shields and hold them away from the wick-tube while the lamp is burning. The bent arm of the rod F lies in conjunction with the horizontal portion of the rod F, so that the two shields will be operated simultaneously.
The letter H indicates a lateral lug on the end of the rod I, which prevents therod from dropping through the opening K when the float falls.
The letter M indicates a stop secured to the top of the lamp, which is adapted to engage the wick-raising shaft and arrest the burner at the proper point, when screwed home, to bring the rods F and I in proper conjunction.
The float is oblong in shape, and is located in a chamber formed by a suitable partition in the lamp, which prevents said float from turning, thus holdingtherod I in properposition.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with the burner and wicktube of a lamp, the wings or shields secured to the pivoted rods having their ends bent, as described, one of said rods beingprovided with a vertical graduated extension and the float and its stem, the latter being adapted, when elevated, to engage the graduated portion of the rod operating the shields, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
In testimony that'I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 5th day of September, 1881.
D. O. BAUGHMAN.
