Description

li albp 7 a. 5. RENFREW 2,
COMBINATION CDNIB AND CONTAINER Filed June 14,-, 1946 INVENTOR.
Patented Feb.) 7, 1950 STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
My invention relates to improvements in combination hair combs and containers, the primary object of my invention being to provide a more practical and convenient device of this nature which is more attractive in form, and lends itself readily to manufacture from a variety of materials at relatively low cost.
Another important object of my invention is to provide a device of the type indicated above which is especially adapted to contain ladies hairpins in a secure and conveniently available manner.
Other important objects and advantages of my invention will be apparent from the following detailed description and the accompanying drawings, wherein a merely illustrative example of the invention is set forth.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a combination comb and container device in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is an elevation of the inward side of the comb and container section of the device, showing hairpins disposed therein.
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the handle section.
Figure 4 is an elevation of the outward side of said handle section.
Figures 5, 6, and 7 are transverse sections taken on the lines 55, 6-6 and 'I'I, respectively, of Figures 1, 2, and 4, respectively.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the numeral 8 generally designates my improved combination comb and container device which comprises the comb section 9 and the handle section II].
The comb section 9 comprises an oval tubular spine II formed in one side with a longitudinal cut-away section I2 extending from a point I3 near the outer end of the spine II, through the inner squared end I4 thereof, the facing edges I5 and I6, respectively of said cut-away section I2 being formed with grooves I! and I8, respectively. The interior of the spine II is hollow at I9 and provides a chamber for containing a plurality of longitudinally arranged hairpins 20 or the like.
A portion of the underside of the spine II extending as far as the point I2, is downwardly tapered to form the main body 2i of the comb 22 with its downwardly tapering comb teeth 23, and the guard teeth 24 and 25, respectively, at the forward and rearward ends of the comb 22. Beyond the point I2 the spine I I forms part of the handle of the comb.
An extension handle ID comprises a tip 26, rearwardly tapering to a point 27, the forward part of said tip being of the same oval cross section as the spine II and having a squared forward end 28 adapted to abut the squared closed spine end It when the sections are assembled.
One side of the tip 26 is formed with tongue 29 of the same traversely curved cross section as the closed side of the spine I I, with flanges 3|] and 3I thereon, for sliding engagement with the grooves I! and I8 in the edges of the cut-away section I2 oi the comb section 9, the tongue 29 being of sufficient length to entirely close the cut-away section I2 when the squared section ends I4 and 28 are abutted, as shown in Figure 1. The rounded and thereby reduced forward end 32 of the tongue facilitates engagement of the flanges 3B and 3| in the corresponding grooves I1 and I8, respectively, at the inner end of the cutaway section I2, in assembling the section 9 and Ill. The contents of the chamber I9 can be sufficiently exposed for removal or replacement by sliding the sections relative to each other without separating them.
What is claimed is:
In an article of manufacture comprising an elongated body forming the back of a comb and consisting in part of a hollow spine, the ends of the latter being closed, a cut-away section ex tending along one side of the elongated body from one end to the other end thereof to expose the interior of the hollow spine, the latter having grooves in the resulting side walls or edges thereof, and an elongated closure member fitting slidably between said grooves to conceal the interior of said hollow spine, said hollow spine and the elongated closure member together being of oval cross-section throughout the length of said hollow spine, and a handle integral with the elongated closure member having substantially the same cross-section along a portion of the length thereof as that of said hollow spine and having the inner end thereof forming a shoulder abutting one end of said elongated body, said handle being separable from said end of said body when the closure member and handle are slid outwardly away therefrom in order to expose the interior of said hollow spine.
