Description

Dec; 27, 1949 w. G. BALZ 2,492,728
PAPER ROLL HOLDER Filed July 28, 1945 1N VEN TOR. /mm a 5 Patented Dec. 27, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ;.2,492.72si"' I I I PAPEBBOLL HOLDER William G. Balz, Kalamazoo, Mich. Application July 2a, 1945, Serial No.607,545
This invention relates to improvements in paper roll holder.
The main objects of this invention are:
First, to provide a holder for paper rolls such as toilet paper and paper rolls generally, particularly those designed for domestic use. in which the roll supporting spindle may be easily released or disengaged from fixed brackets or support members provided with spindle bearings.
Second, to provide a structure of this character which is simple and economical in its parts and easily manipulated.
Objects pertaining to details and economies of the invention will definitely appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined in the claims.
A structure which embodies the features of the invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary view partially in longi tudinal section of a paper roll holder embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view partially in section of a modified form or embodiment of my invention in which the holders or support members are of the inset type.
In the embodiment of the invention illustrated in Fig. 1 the numeral l represents the wall or other main support on which brackets 2 and 3 are mounted in spaced relation to receive the roll of paper 4 between them. These brackets or support members are provided with inwardly facing opposed bearings 5 and 6, respectively, adapted to receive the journal portions 1 and 8 of the spindle members or sections 9 and H1. The main body portion of the spindle members is of such diameter as to fit within the core I I of the paper roll.
The spindle members or sections may be desira-bly formed of wood. They are formed with shoulders l2 at the bases of their journals, these shoulders being in thrust engagement with the inner sides of the bracket. The spindle member 9 has a longitudinal bore 13 receiving the reduced inner end Id of the spindle member Ill. The coiled spring I5 seated within the bore yieldingly urges the spindle members outwardly relative to each other and their shoulders against the inner side of the support which maintains their jour nals in bearing relation to the support bearings.
To facilitate release of the spindle or disen gagement from its supports, I provide a spindle release rod l6 disposed through a bore IT in the support 3 and opening to the bearing 6 thereof.
' recess 28 to receive the finger piece 29.
2 Claims. -(o1. 24.2-55.2)
This release rod is provided with a head H3 at its inner end engaging the end of the spindle section 10. It is provided at its outer end with a finger piece 19 which has threaded engagement therewith, this permitting the ready assembly of the release member and retaining it in assembled relation to the support 3. When it is desired to release the spindle it is only necessary to press on the release rod which collapses the spindle against the thrust of the spring, forcing its journal out of engagement with its bearing and permitting the spindle to be withdrawn. To engag the spindle with a fresh roll of paper, one end may be entered into its bearing, the spindle collapsed and pushed into alinement with the other bearing. The bearings are of such size as to permit this tilting movement and, of course, there is no particular object in having a close fit.
In the embodiment of the invention shown in Fig. 2 I illustrate an adaptation to a box-like inset holder 20. In this embodiment the ends 2| of the holder constitute the spindle support members. They are provided with bearing openings 22 receiving the journals of the spindle which is the same as that described for Fig. 1. The release member 23 is pivoted at 24 and conformed to engage one end of the spindle. A push button 25 extends through a hole 26 in the flange 21 of the holder, the flange having an outwardly facing The spindle is released by pushing on the release member which imparts collapsing end thrust to the spindle.
I have illustrated and described the invention in Figs. 1 and 2 as adapted to different types of fixtures. It is believed that this disclosure will enable those skilled in the art to which the invention relates to embody or adapt the same as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a holder for paper rolls, the combination of brackets having opposed inwardly facing spindle bearings, one bracket having an outwardly facing recess alined with its spindle bearing and a bore between the bottom of the recess and the alined spindle bearing, a roll spindle comprising telescoping sections provided at their outer ends with journal portions coacting with said bearings and outwardly facing shoulders normally in thrust engagement with the inner sides of the brackets, one of said sections having a longitudinal bore and the other a reduced portion extending into said bore, a spring arranged in said bore and acting to urge said sections yieldingly against said brackets, and a spindle release rod arranged in said bore in said bracket and provided with a head at its inner end engaging the adjacent end of said spindle and with a finger piece at its outer end adapted to enter said recess, the actuation of said release rod collapsing said spindle to facilitate its disengagement from said bracket bearings.
' facilitating the collapsing and releasing of the 2- n aalzxolder for paper: r a' hw m inati I;
of brackets having opposed inwardly-facing spindle bearings, one bracket having an outwardly facing recess alined with its spindle bearing and a bore between the bottom of the recess ;and; the
alined spindle bearing, a roll spindle comprising telescoping sections, a spring acting-toyieldingly urge said spindle sections into coacting relation with said bracket bearings, and a spindle release rod arranged in said borein said-bracket and provided with a headgat its inner end engagspindle from its bearings.
