3 Claims. (Cl. 242-552) This invention relates to improvements in a holder for rolled material. More particularly the invention relates to a holder of the type commonly used in bathrooms for holding rolls of toilet paper.
While the roller of this invention is particularly tioned thereon or removed therefrom. Other types provide a spring-pressed member in the middle of the shaft or at one end. In each of these paper holders it is dilicuit to adjust the shaft to prevent scratching of the fixture when the roll is replaced. A further disadvantage lies in the fact that it is difficult, and in most cases impossible, to remove the shaft from its supporting members when all the paper has been removed from the cardboard center core without first tearing open this core. These cores are usually made of heavy cardboard not easily torn without the aid of a knife.
In the paper holder of the present invention all of these disadvantages are overcome by the use of a shaft having spring-pressed, ball shaped members at both ends. This shaft permits easy adjustment for insertion into the fixture and the ball shaped end members afford a means for withdrawing the member by pulling outwardly on the empty center core of the paper roll, without first tearing open this core.
It is accordingly an important object of this invention to provide a paper holder which may be quickly and easily adjusted for insertion in supporting members.
Another object of this invention is to provide a paper holder which may be removed from its supporting members without first removing the center core of the paper roll.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a paper holder which may be removed from its supporting members by merely pulling outwardly on the shaft.
Another and further object of this invention is to provide a paper holder having a shaft the parts of which may be telescoped by the outward movement of the shaft itself.
According to the general features of this invention there is provided a paper holder having a center shaft which is equipped with members having semi-spherical outer end portions, said members being spaced apart and pressed outwardly into sockets in supporting arms by a common center spring which is enclosed inside the shaft.
Other and further objects, features and advantages of this invention will be evident to one skilled in the art from the following detailed description taken in connection with the annexed sheet of drawings, on which:
Figure l is a plan view of a holder of this invention;
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken substantially on line II-II of Figure 1 looking in the direction indicated by the arrows; and
Figure 3 is a fragmentary sectional view similar to Figure 2 and showing a modified form of the holder of this invention.
In Figs. 1 and 2 reference numeral H) is a rotatable shaft supported at either end in a bracket or support arm H.
The shaft It! comprises a substantially cylindrical member l3 having a central aperture l3a extending from one end to the other therein. At each end the member I3 is bent inwardly to form an annular flange portion, [317 which is arranged to limit the outward movement of a telescoping end member M.
The end members It are each adapted to be positioned in a semi-spherical shaped socket Ila of the bracket l I for supporting the shaft. Each member l l comprises a cylindrical portion Ma which is adapted to slide in the central core 13a of the shaft l3. A forward semi-spherical end portion Mb is joined to the cylindrical portion I ia by means of a transition section I40 thus affording an outside shoulder portion Md and an inside shoulder portion Me. A spring member I5 is arranged inside the shaft l3 to abut at either end against the inside shoulder portions Me of the members l4 and to move the members l4 outwardly. The annu ar flange l3b acts as a l mit to the outward movement of the members [4.
Thus it is seen, in Fig. 2, that there is provided in this invention a center shaft having members with semi-spherical end port ons disposed at either end inside of said shaft and arrangedto be urged outwardly against a limiting flange I322 of the shaft-I3.
It is to be noted that the spring I5 is used to move the end members l4 outwardly against the annular flanges l3b as a limit. Under these conditions the tightness or looseness of the fit of the shaft assembly in the support arms II will not depend upon the spring I5 but rather upon the correct positioning of the supporting arms I I.
In Fig. 3 is shown a modification in which there is provided a substantially cylindrical portion I4 betweentthe tfront, ball" shaped-imemher Mg sand the transition portion mh. With this arrangement the spring [5 does not urge the member I4 pose to limit the patent granted hereon other than necessitated by the scope of the appended claims.
We claim as our invention:
1. A holder for rolled material comprising a hollow cylindrical shaft, a pair of support arms having oppositely disposed segmental spherical sockets, -a,ccy1mdrica1 enld 'member' tel'escopingly received in eachwnd ofsa'iid shaft in'guided sliding contact with the inner wall of said shaft and against the edge of the ring I3b as a stop but ihaving a closed spherical end adapted to be disis instead used to press the members I42 into the sockets I II) provided in the support arms'f I. In this modification the positioning loiitheashatti-I3 in the support arms is more 'positive 'than-is the arrangement of Figure 2.
Also shown in Fig. 3 is a substantially cylindrical aperture III) in the support iarmilI iinsteadqof the oval socket I Ia of Fig. 2. Either socket, I lb or Ila, may be provided as desired.
