J. Mams- HARNESS. i 10.249,267. n Patented-Nov.8,1881.'
` UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
JACOB STRAUS, OF. ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
HARNESS.
SPECIFICATION forming -part'of Letters Patent No. 249,267, dated November 8, 1881, Application tiled August 12, 1881. (Model.)
l following'is a specification.
My invention and improvement relates to breastcollars, wherein I use ametallic yoke combined with pads, conneeted and construct- .ed as will be shown.
The objects of my invention are, first, to make a harness which may be'readily fitted to the breast and shoulders ot' large or small animals and adapted for light or heavy draft and single or double harness; second, to cornbine strength with lightness of materialV and cheapness with durability and ease of' manufacture.
The following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, hereinafter referred to, forms a full and plain speciiication, wherein are set forth the nature and principles of myinvention, together with such parts thereof as are claimed to be new and are desired to be secured by Letters Patent.
In the accompanying drawings similar letters and figures ofreferen ce indicate like parts.
Figure `l is a front elevation. Fig. 2 is a cross-section ot' Fig. l online x a'. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the T-socket plates. Fig. et is avertical section on line x' x of Fig. 2. Fig. V5 is a longitudinal section on line x2 m2 of Fig. 1. Figs.6 and 7 are perspective views of the T-jointed coupling.`
The yoke A, Fig. 1, forms the breast part of the collar, other suitable material, and of such form and length as may be desirable. It has upon its center an eye, b, in which is the opening P, which is used for holding the pole and martingale straps when attached to the yoke. Upon leach end of the yoke A are the eyes c c', t0
which the tugs are fastened and held by them 0E from the animal, so as to prevent any chalin g of its sides. y
The T-jointed arm E, Figs. 5, 6, and 7, is made of metal, and formed as shown in Figs.
and is made of metal or any 6 or 7, with the parts a a and the pintle h upon it, though the latter may be dispensed with. One hole or more is made in it for receiving the screw or bolt 13 i', Fig. 2, by which it is rigidly or movably attached to the yoke A, with its T end socketed in the pads B B'. These pads are elongated in form from top to bottom, and are made and'iilled likeother harness-pads. TheeXteriorpa-rt,S, Fig.l,however, is made of thick heavy leather, and has outside of it another piece, C O', made oi'leather, of similar character. Between these parts ofthe pad, and securely fastened there by the rivets lA Z', Fig. 4, and the stitching, are` the metallic plates f and e, Fig. 3. The plate f is recessed vupon its inner surface at g g to receive the parts a. (1t/.0f the arm E, which are placed in them by inserting the T-headed part of this arm into the slot o of the plate j'and crowding it into place. The pads thus attached to the T-jointed arm E are movable upon itin the socket formed for that .purpose in the plates f and e. The perforations It la k in the yoke A, Figs. l` and 5, are for inserting the screws c' i', and permit ot' shifting the pads in or out on it. The metallic plate c, Fig. 3, has the eye d d upon its upper periphery, for `connecting the pads B B' to the lower part, N N', of the neckstrap D through the buckles M M', Fig.. l.
Very desirable advantages are obtained from the peculiar construction oi' and combined use of these several parts.
Having fully described myinvention, I claim asnew and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. In a harness, the combination of the pads B B', having platef, slotted and recessed, as at o g g', and the plate c therewith7 the T-jcinted arm E, screw or bolt t' i', yoke A, neck -strap D N'N, and buckles M M', as and for the purposes set forth.
2. In aharness, the combination of the pads B B', yoke A, screw or boltst' i', and neckstrap D, and its several parts, all substantially as and for the purposes mentioned. JACOB STRAUS. `Witnesses:
CHARLES PIoKLEs,
H. EDWARD THOMPSON.
